Music history is forever going to be hindered by the fact that audio recordings are an invention of the 20th century and classical music was mostly a upper class thing. What people were playing in pubs in Mozart's time was very different. Rock is very much a revival of European paganism and hedonism in rebellion to Christian puritanism. Music was just a vehicle.
