Can Misaki be trusted?

I would trust Misaki I wish she would come to my apartment.

No, the only reason she did what did was to feel better about herself, in the moment you stoped being a hikikomori she would start to sabotage you and bring you down for good, the only reason this did not happen in the anime is because Satou rejected her help, and thus forced her to reveal herself, and then they started to have a reciprocal relationship and she stoped being manipulative.

This would be completely fine by me.

The ending of NHK (the anime, at least), is actually absurdly depressing. Misaki is going to leave him as soon as she fully re-integrated back into society, because she's a pretty young girl and it's possible for her. Satou is shit out of luck, he's been out of the game for far too long. Misaki will be gone within a year or two, and then where the hell will he be?
The author of the light novel never addressed this, and I like that, because he himself admitted in the foreword of the second edition that he is still a hikkikomori and hasn't found a way out of his own situation (he's just sitting in his apartment living off the royalties from the book/manga license/anime license).

And each version sort of comes up with their own conclusion, if I remember correctly the novel has the most pessimistic one, Satou and Misaki part ways and all that, the manga is the most optimistic, but still implies it probably won't work out, and the anime is too open ended to really make anything out of.

I remember reading that from the author. Like the author's note he released with the first edition was "I'm successful now, I have a career, I'm going to work to get out of my situation and re-join society!"
Then the note he released with the second edition was "I still barely go outside, only difference between now and then is that I'm rich."
Also, I want to share some of my favorite lines from this series. Light novel:
>"Americans are perverted as fuck, and Russians are into weird stuff too" (when Satou was looking at porn in the LN)
>"We'll save the world with our Hentai Games!" (Yamazaki, again in the LN)
Anime:
>*Satou is planning to commit suicide because his oneitis got back together with Chad*
>Misaki: "You're even more useless and pathetic than I am!"
>Other guy, to Satou: "Wait....is that supposed to make you *not* want to jump off the cliff?"
Anyone else notice how each "friend" Satou makes in his history worsens his situation, but then these smugfags each find a way out of their comparatively favourable positions?

until she understands that now you need her more than the contrary and start a abusive relationship, and one you have no way to leave due being a hikikomori.

I don't think she will abandon him after all that suicide thing, unless Satou fucks up realy bad (goes out like he did with Hitomi).
I watched the anime and read the manga like six years ago and don't remember everything that well, but I found the end depressing. In hindsight I don't think I liked it very much. It was too "real" at the end. I can deal with "realness" in a story but I like the ending to be ideal, if that makes sense.

She will abandon him. Satou is a mentally unstable, stupid, dirt-poor man who, at best, is of average looks. Misaki will go to college, and there she will meet men her own age, who are ambitious, intelligent, and either already rich or on their way to wealth.

I get what you mean, but remember that the author was a NEET when he wrote the book and he based it on his own experiences. I don't think he could convincingly come up with a happy ending, because he never found one in real life.

Yeah, that's fair. I don't think that it was bad or anything. I just like to escape I guess.
I don't think so. You know how she is, so any relations with her is a gamble.

That's sad but I sorta respect it for not just giving out a happy ending. Everyone hopes for a happy ending and it's common for series like OMK (and pic related arguably) to try to assure readers that things will work out. NHK though isn't realistic because it's depressing, it's depressing because it's realistic and those endings fit.

In a lot of ways, I think I prefer shows in which the protagonist just straight-up dies. (Spoilers for two of the most popular shows ever coming up, but if you're here then you've probably seen them so whatever)

I think a lot of us are just so fundamentally empty/ruined as people that we can never actually be happy. If the protagonist ends up having a happily ever after type of ending, then the immersion and escapism is immediately broken and the show itself is ruined for me. The best we can hope for is to die in a way that makes the lives of those around us better.

>protagonist just straight up dies
Except now he didn't

I don't know which of the two you're referring to, and I don't care. I'm an adult now, every show and movie series from my childhood is over and done with as far as I'm concerned. Tack on whatever new BS you want, I'll just ignore it.
