With mine we eased into that slowly, like she started off asking me my name, my living situation, friends, relatives, pets, etc, then introduced herself, explained her qualifications(therapist and an actual medical nurse and something else i don't remember) and asked me why I was there. I told her since I don't like to mince words I just sort of dived right into my shitty life up until that point just to sort of get it out of the way. After that we just sort of had conversations, 'what's on your mind, how was your such and such a holiday, what do you remember about such and such a person, how do you feel about such and such a thing' trying to gauge if what i was feeding her was a sack of shit or the legit truth. It might not work with everyone this way, it takes a special kind of person to resonate with your specific needs of treatment. I felt comfortable enough with her that i could dive right in because she told me point blank(right after i told her why i was there) that she'd attempted suicide several times in her life and that's why she wanted to do the work she did. If you feel you can talk to this person and tell them all the secrets you've literally told NOBODY else about, then yeah, jump right the fuck into the deep end and hope they're around to help you learn to swim or whatever shitty analogy I can think up.
