BAD advice.
/soc/ is a huge sausage fest that will knock you down in terms of looks, if you're less attractive than them then you're fucked, if you're more attractive than them then they'll consider you 6/10 at best.

They go on /soc/ so they can meet and pump+dump the dozens of sluts who hang there, they don't want more competition of "potentially good looking guys", so they're harsher with the scores in hopes it will knock your confidence down and leave and if you're on r9k, chances are it will have those effects.

If by a rare chance there's girls in the rating threads and they give you a good rate (7/10 or over), you're can safely hold your head up in pride knowing you have a chance, but at the same time the problem is the second a girl pops up like anywhere else here, everyone goes apeshit and thirsty for her attention. Its a very small window of opportunity.
