Different guy here, but pretty much my whole family are in the industry.

Both of my parents got into it basically through accident or coincidence.

My dad was an architect and took a project for Disney, and some of the people he worked with also did set design and got him a job doing the same when the project ended. He's been in the industry ever since and is now usually an art director. (Art Department jobs are almost always contract work and you don't always get hired for the same position on every project, sometimes my dad's an Art Director and sometimes he's a Set Designer.)

My mom took a random job at a music publishing company when my parents moved on the East Coast and her boss had a brother who ran an ad agency in LA and gave her a job when they moved here. She eventually moved to a major studio and worked her way up to being in charge of "creative advertising," which basically means anything normal people see, like trailers, posters, etc. She lost the job when the studio got bought out and started her own company and then got ripped off by her business partner a few years later and it's a big part of why my family is broke now.

My uncle did entertainment law and then was a founding partner at one of the talent agencies that merged to become WME a few years ago. He's loaded because of it and his son is now an NHL commentator, and his daughter is a national news producer. I probably could've gotten a badass job through him and been rich too but I became a loser NEET instead.
