communism never worked because it assumed govt would do something different with money and the economy than private businesses/organizations, forgetting that people are still people. when everyone is relatively equally fucked people give and take from each other, rather than collectively trying to take from a small group of communist leaders who themselves react in a way that creates conflict.

There is also two other ways to do a socialist economy. Anarchist style decentralized planned economy where planning is done by local workers councils. There is also Yugoslavia market socialism where coop worker controlled businesses compete in a market.

I just honestly don't feel educated enough about it to call myself one. I know most of the basics but I've never cracked open a proper text by Marx, Engels, Lenin, etc.

You should start by just reading the communist manifesto. Lenin's book "imperialism the highest stage of capitalism" is pretty nice as well. Das Kapital is really long but also pretty good. Trotsky's nook "the revoultion betrayed" is another book I recommend.

I've read the manifesto - I mean who hasn't, it's pretty short.

My only worry with diving into it is the complexity. I know stuff like dialectical materialism - and many other elements of Marxism - has its roots in Hegelianism, which I have no idea about.

I was interested in starting Das Kapital once and looked up a 'what to read beforehand' list and it also seemed pretty complex.
