I've worked on Tallships for two years. Often with female crew.

Yes it is. The fastest swimmer in the world can make what? 3 knots in any sort of tide. You go overboard you either sit tight in your life jacket and beacon or you die and on most working ships you won't be wearing either.

You can't see people on deck at night let alone in the water. If you go overboard in any sort of sea state were you can swim you either dived off intentionally or you deserve to drown.

My ship averages 8-10 knots you might aswell fall out of a car and run to catch up. That's what that guy sounds like. I'd drive but I can't run.

Procedure is to heave to and drop a motor boat but that can take 4-5 minutes plus you'd a spec in the surf if you can still keep your head above water.

You can keep small and long arms inside your vessel, but I think they have to be locked. Bleh. Sail power is a must, but any decently sized sailboat will have a diesel saildrive, too. It's incredibly unlikely that you would run into military, they are all far away from anything notable.
besides, you aren't under their juristiction in international waters, and for that reason, there isn't anything protecting you from unreasonable search, but trying to site american law against you would only be as valid as "i don't like your face"

They'd have to be non-firing. There are historic tallships that travel from port to port for reenactments and the like, but they have only non-firing big guns (all powder, no projectile).

But the point is that, in reality, you'd never be able to afford something of that size anyway. The most economical solution is a fleet of ~40 footers with 8 people each. You could maybe have a larger assault rifle/machine gun that you could fit into a jig built near a gunwhale, but that might end up being too complicated.

Every crew member should have a medium/long range rifle for engagements up to a thousand yards or whatever, and marine shotguns and small arms for onboard engagements. Each boat should have one or two dinghies (hung by davits) for boarding or close engagement. Big guns just aren't the answer for fending off modern pirates or whatever,

Total cost would be probably $80k per vessel, all told, for a very used boat that's brought up to spec.

Black powder cannons are not firearms under US law, so I think we could bring them with us. The better option would be to buy military surplus bolt actions, like my yugo mauser. They have sights out to 2000 yards or so for volley fire on somali pirates, and my ARs and AKs would work for inside 500 meters. The ARs and Aks and pistols would be just fine for close quarters. I was eyeballing a flintlock pistol at Cabela's the other day, and now that I think about it, it would be perfect for ceremonial activities, like executing mutineers and women, like real pirates.
