how do you get out a commitment with an online friend. im not trying to cut them off. i just need a break.
Whatever you do just tell them directly, I had a friend who suddenly disappeared for no reason and even after almost a year that happened I still feel bad about it.

just a break. not ending the friendship
I say theres just periods where i get down and dont want to talk to anyone, not even my own family. They usually leave mr alone and understand. In reality i just wanna be left alone because i am doing fun things i like.

what do you tell them?

Tell him. Do not chicken out. I need a break since I have problems to deal on my own.
That is easy. Just do it.

they know me well enough to know thats not a thing with me

I wouldn't tell them I needed a break, because I might change my mind and feel normal soon, and then it would seem like I had made a commitment to not talking to them, which is no longer applicable.
Also, wait, you want out of a "commitment." What kind of commitment? Right now I'm just presuming 'regular communication' is the commitment.
I usually stop to come online for weeks, but people often think I committed suicide if they don't know me well enough. I feel like you shouldn't tell them anything or maybe say you are busy and have to do something.
just be honest with them, tell them that you want to take a break because you've been feeling drained, want a little space, or whatever. if they're good friends they'll respect that and appreciate your honesty. if you up and leave without saying anything they can take it the wrong way
