i would say that it has facilitated it but not necessitated it. the best solution to combating extremism is not more extremism but that's the way things end up naturally. in my opinion, we need more grounded moderate voices in politics. going extreme right wing is just giving into an us vs them dynamic and in some ways it strengthens the people you oppose because it gives them a real life boogeyman to point to and rally against.

Until the moderates are dedicated and willing to fight just as hard, they're always going to be overtaken by extremists.

why support the right wing extremists when you know there are problems that will arise if they succeed? you are enabling the people you don't really agree with to assume power because they will help you oust the people who are currently gaining power that you also don't agree with. is this a solution or is this trading one set of problems for another? once an ideology gains traction, it's easy for it to go off the rails (extremist left wing ideology is a nice example).

Though generally, it is easier to move towards the centre from the right than it is to do so from the left, for both economic and cultural reasons.

Because it's not happening, and it will take far too long to be put in place.
Had people have started mobilising behind moderate values and passionately defending them about 10 years ago, there'd be the numbers needed to make a difference, but there isn't.
Most people are too complacent, and only become interested in politics when it directly affects them, so of course their reaction is emotionally driven and extreme, so they go to either side of extremists.

We don't have time to try and put things like that in place.
I'd be optimistic if I thought we had a decade before there is some sort of major violent conflict.

It is trading one set of problems for another, but personally, I have fewer problems with the issues the right brings.
