Why are schools so unconvincing with their anti-every drug lectures?

At my school they did an anti-smoking thing where they showed us actual diseased lungs and shit for like 15 min. It was extremely unsettling and disgusting but extremely effective but the parents complained to the school and so they just did like kiddy little lectures and shit every subsequent time.

If you show someone the horrible truth then they'll process it much easier than condescending lectures and just you saying what will happen.

Except the vast majority of the time people try drugs, even dangerous addictive drugs, that doesn't happen

No one's claiming drugs can't be very dangerous, it's just been shown that if you tell kids that "if you take drugs you will get addicted and fuck up your entire life" in school, then they get into the real world and see how many perfectly well adjusted and successful people do hard drugs semi regularly, it kind of disillusions them to the advice they got and makes them think that drugs aren't harmful at all.

The kids in the US who god the DARE style "DRUGS WILL KILL YOU" style of drug education ended up being much more likely to be drug addicts later in life

opiates, of course, everyone should stay away from. But there's nothing wrong with smoking some pot every once in a while or experimenting with psychedelics.

I grew up thinking drugs were evil and if you did drugs you were an idiot who was going to end up working at McDonalds until they overdosed in a ditch. Then I got into a good university and got a good career and realize that the majority of successful young people use drugs pretty regularly

I'm not saying drugs are a good thing, I'm saying teachings kids (who are going to try drugs regardless) how to do drugs responsibly (i.e. ensure their drugs aren't a mix of gasoline, draino, battery acid and antifreeze) is better than teaching them nothing about drugs other than they're bad (in which case they'll think that the gasoline antifreeze mix is every bit as "bad" as a few pills

It's similar to the way that US states that practice abstinence only sex ed have by far the higher teen pregnancy rates.

It's because they base it on the 80's meme of the guy doing heroin or crack and fucking up his whole life in the process.

Of course, that guy exists, but is he a good representation of the majority, does he explain why the average kid will try weed?

Truth is, addiction at its root has a psychological component, and you can be addicted to internet (like posting on 4chan), porn, gambling, alcohol, etc.

So why don't they explain the basis, what is the reason behind the need to take drugs?
