Essentially only the poor were drafted and sent to Vietnam. The middle class kids of the day went to college and received deferments, and upper-class kids could get simply get out of it through connections. The average age of a U.S enlisted man in Vietnam was about 19. Imagine being sent to Vietnam at age 19 against your will to fight suicidal jungle guerrillas because your family didn't have the money to fight back.

Grandpa was enlisted in the Marine Corps and did 3 tours. I have only gotten very little out of him about combat but the one time he did open up he said he remembered a bunch of kids and after that started crying. I assume he either killed them or saw them die :(
