I just replaced an oil pan on an 850 a couple days ago.
I don't recommend it.
i drive a '94 2 door jeep cherokee with a straight six engine, a 3 inch lift, and 32 inch tires
it's honestly my dream car. it's super utilitarian, almost everything is manual and won't break. no power windows, no power mirrors, no bullshit beeping noises when you don't wear your seatbelt.
almost every part is accessible enough to swap out on your own, and any junkyard will be littered with cherokee parts. the straight six also refuses to die.
the back seats fold down and make room for a mattress, sleeping bag, and buddy heater. i've lived out of my jeep for weeks at a time. the windows are ultra tinted, so nobody can see inside. there's nothing quite like driving out to a rural beach, parking on the sand, dropping acid, then staring at the stars until you pull the trunk closed and go to sleep.
unfortunaly rust is eating away at the body so it can't last forever, but i wouldn't mind driving this truck until i died.

Seconded from a guy who did an engine R&R on one.
If it's a Volvo that's without a longitudinally-mounted engine and rear-wheel drive, you don't want it. Get a real Volvo driven by it's rear wheels, made before the company went to shit.
240's are good cheap and reliable. Get one of those.

My dad got up to like 350,000 miles on one of those 240s. I even drove it for awhile.
Currently have 233,000 mi on my 99 jeep.
I think I have a coolant leak I cant find. Keep having to add half a container of antifreeze about once every two month. Where is it going? I replaced the heater core, most of the hoses, the thermostat, and the radiator about half a year ago.

Altho as these guys said, the older models are very friendly to work on. Guy down the road here swapped clutch on his S60 last week, he had to pull out the engine. If you're going with the old one I'd recommend the 700 or 900 series though, they have the simplicity of the old but much of the comfort of the new cars. It's a joy to see a well looked after Volvo btw.
>wanted to sell my current car I've had for 3 years and buy an 89 nissan 300zx now that I know how to keep a car from falling apart.
>mom says I'm too young to buy a fun car and I need a "newer" "reliable" car. finds me an $8000 ford fusion to lease.
>refuse a thousand times, tell her I'd rather take the bus. she keeps nagging me about it.
>eventually concede because I'm a wimp who doesn't want to disappoint mommy.
just kill me lads.

Hahaha.
Wow. I had a similar experience. Almost the same car.
Some guy was selling his 84 300zx for 1500
He said all it needed was a new timing belt and a radiator, and new hoses. Mightve had some smog problems, and smog is a bitch in CA.
I dont want to give up my 99 XJ either. It'd be hard to hold onto two cars in my current situation.

Get it pressure tested. If that checks out, you're probably burning it.
>tfw no manual mark viii spaceship-mobile
>tfw no desirable fox bodies in my area
Daily reminder that a miata is the best robot car out there.
