Actually during the Viking period Catholic clerics were still allowed to have wives and many still had concubines and numerous bastards beyond the 1100s(I think) when the Catholic church banned marriage for priests.

Oh and Deacons are a big part of the Catholic church as well, deacons are Catholic clerics that are allowed to marry, have legitimate heirs, and hold secular authority in their communities.
