A lot of modern anime is usually just an advertisement for its source material. Sometimes it's legitimately fun to watch but there's almost always no concrete ending. For example, I really liked Haikyuu and Log Horizon these past few years but they were essentially advertisements. Haikyuu had legitimately good animation though.

Hi, I read the entirety of Umineko as it came out and I feel like I'm being generous when I give it a 4/10. It's a convoluted mess that reads like it was written by a 12 year old. The Japanese fanbase refuses to so much as give Ryuukishi the time of the day nowadays for good reason.
Honestly, I find the extent to which the western fanbase is obsessed with Umineko to this day to be frightening in a sense. I have no idea how you guys can drone on about it day after day nearly six years after the final episode was released; Ryuukishi is a hack who has no idea how to actually tell a story that does anything except continually bait the reader with red herrings and empty promises of greater themes. He's been like this since Higurashi and will never improve, either on a technical level or as a storyteller in general.

Like I said, almost no Japanese fan cares about Ryuukishi nowadays, and it's more than people just being pissed off about episode 8 of Umineko (people were pissed off about Minagoroshi and Matsuribayashi long before then, anyway). It's because they've had enough exposure to him to see through his tricks and stop falling for his brand of spectacle and sophistry. And yes, his terrible, childish text is part of the problem too - there are parts of Higurashi that have such embarrassingly poor writing that they're used as copypasta on 2ch.
I don't know how the western fanbase continues to put up with Ryuukishi, and I honestly feel that it's damaging to the community as a whole to continue to obsess this much over a single work so long after the fact. I suppose to a degree it comes part and parcel with the reality that you guys are exposed to such a tiny slice of what's out there, but when the game in question is something as obviously and majorly flawed as Umineko, I can't help but feel a sense of unease

I hope you won't dismiss this reply as trolling, because it's something I'm genuinely concerned about and doesn't seem to be going away.

Katawa Shoujo is weird, I have no idea whether I actually like it or not. On one hand it made me feel like shit but on the other it's written well and it drew me in long enough to finish a playthrough. It's a really weird feeling not knowing whether you like something or not.

I read all of Higurashi and am currently reading Umineko I guess I've read a fair few VNs but you know I wouldn't really say I've experienced the full spectrum especially when you consider the vast sea of untranslated stuff but I always enjoyed R07s writing its just so comfy and wholesome but I understand what you mean and at times it is sloppy but I feel like all writers at some point in VNs just slack off and force plot.

Umineko definitely feels like its lacking direction at times and alluding to a greater underlying plot that never really surfaces or amounts to anything. The only VN I don't understand the obsession over is MuvLuv the entire series is just garbage, good waifus but everything else is utter shit I can't believe I forced myself to read through all that forced drama and info dump horseshit anyone who tries to make it out to be some kind of masterpiece is utterly retarded, I don't know how successful it is in Japan but I assume very because there's so fucking much of it and its fuelled by otaku pandering waifu shit, the series is an irredeemable mistake.

With that being said though, what VN's do you consider would be worth reading?

Lately I've been playing a lot of Yuzusoft games because I'm lonely and I just want cute girls in my life. They have moeshit down to a fucking science over there, too bad they still haven't hired good writers. Some of the best moeshit art in the scene IMO but also a lot of wasted potential because they come up with really cool scenarios but do nothing with them. Dracu-Riot! probably has the most interesting setting in a moeshit game I've ever seen but they don't very far with it, still probably their best game though. I finished Senren Banka the other day and it was meh, I like the girls though so I guess they succeeded but the story bored me to tears.

what a fortuitous thread, i just got done playing a vaguely enjoyable h-game and am having trouble finding another one.

the one i just finished was ramen no oujisama (which is still in beta apparently), and it was trite but fine and i liked my waifu

i have been browsing vndb but haven't managed to find something that fits the following criteria:

I'll tell you right now, if you thought Sanoba Witch was at all boring then Senren Banka will bore the fuck out of you. The girls are great though, I like Senren Banka's girls overall better than Sanoba Witch but I thought the latter was a better read overall. Nene's route was the only interesting route in that game for me. I liked Tsumugi's route too though just because I think she's cute as fuck. Didn't care much for the others.
