I moved about a three hour drive from where I used to live last year. I don't know anyone here and I'd say I spend even more time inside doing nothing as a result.

from what i have heard, you should always travel to where you want to go and live in a hotel there first for a week to get a feel for the area

You may move and "start over", but unless you have the will to change and a social battle plan, you're doomed to make a lot of the same mistakes that led you to your current life.

You cannot run away from your problems. Also you better have money and a job waiting for you in that new state. Can't just "move".
