Well with what I remember, people on /co/ were praising the show, and everyone claimed it was a bit if self depreciating humor whether they were being ironic or not. Then the trend spread to where the mods were deleting everything, which spurned the members of the site to flood everything with it in an attempt to piss off the mods.

I can see how over time the number of people talking about it can lead others hiding their power level to believe they aren't alone, which led to them finding others to reaffirm that they indeed aren't alone. Which led to the mess we have today.

I tried watching it back in 2011 when the climb was up, to see what everyone was going on about, but I couldn't get past the first two episodes. Too much singing and super happy happy sing some more. However, it wasn't hard for me to notice how the show basically became a prescription for depression to many people out there.

I still identify as a brony. I think I've been for almost exactly six years now.
But I don't care so much anymore. I don't even care to watch the episodes when they come out, half of season 6 I only saw in a marathon at a brony meetup. And I don't listen to brony music or read fanfiction anymore.
I still cosplay MLP, and have a cosplay I work on a bit, but overall, I don't care much anymore. And the creators are assholes.

My local brony group, I wish I could drop them, but I have no friends and need to go to the few brony meetups that are. They hate me, and have stupid humour and some are very annoying, and they have -problematic- attitudes that bother me sometimes. And they make meetups in secret to exclude me sometimes.

Last night, I randomly remembered my Gaia Online name from exactly 10 years ago. I was 13, going on 14.

I googled it and found my Gaia, my fanart central page, and my deviant art.

I got on /b/ one day and I saw a thread and noticed there was a war between people who hated the show and those who watched it and those who liked it either genuinely or just to piss off the others.

I was amused by seeing the threads in passing and eventually after seeing those reoccuring general threads on /b/ I figured I'd watch the first episode. Since it was a two parter I had to watch the second one too. The next day was a saturday and a new episode came out and they were streaming it on JustinTV and I watched that episode with /co/. Started doing that every saturday that a new episode came out for the next few seasons. I'd lurk thread and eventually /mlp/ sometimes too.

Have you really tried to follow the message of the show, though?
The lessons are mostly for when you already have a friendship, but there is also a tutorial on how to make friends. You just need to be:
funny
loyal
honest
generous
kind

Then it happens by itself. Some of them aren't super direct. For example, generous doesn't only mean gifts, it's also about giving time, for example. Honesty means telling the truth, but you also need to just be yourself, don't pretend you are someone else. Funny doesn't only mean telling jokes, it just means you need to be fun to be around, that you can laugh together.

So yeah, making friends should be really easy, if you just do this, friends will come by themselves. Just do what the shows tells you to.

I'm not even fully off the ride - I still think about ponies from time to time, and I even check out /mlp/ once in a blue moon.

All in all the show both helped and harmed me. Helped in that it gave me something to do, something to look forward to, and allowed me to detach myself from humans, because I could have fantasies about ponies instead. Harmed because it made me a flaming faggot and some people could have found out because I posted pony shit on YouTube.
