Asuka is sort of the rule 63 of a robot. No mother figure, so she develops like a boy. Ambitious, egotistical, socially dominant. Represses her feelings and hates herself. Just wants the love she never got as a child. Tries to get it by competing for everyone's approval - it doesn't work.

The archtypical robot is male but developed like a girl thanks to having no father figure in his early years. Submissive, passive, socially reclusive. Openly vents about his 'feels'.

The point at which the two converge is that they both hate themselves and want to be loved.

I guarantee the majority of shows most people watch were made after NGE anyway when said tropes were more solidified by postmodern feedback loops of self-parody. Part of the thing that makes NGE good is that it appeals to people outside the typical weeb crowd, maybe a less experienced viewer would miss the deconstruction of particular anime tropes, but in my opinion those things are a much less noteworthy part of NGEs commentary than say... Shinji's introversion and dependency, which relates to much more people on a much deeper level.

I was also deep in depression when I saw it. The ending has impact, but I also wouldn't describe it as happy (for the viewer, it is a happy ending for Shinji), because it forces in your face that there will not be a supernatural force to help you face the problems in your life.
