Cost of living is relative. For Americans with your dollar hamburgers and basically free gas Japan must seem ludicrously expensive but as a Yuropoor I imagine it'll be pretty much the same for me. Some things will be a lot cheaper while other things will be more expensive.

Yeah, I pay 350 quid a month for a room in a shared house and that's only slightly above average for this area, which is one of the cheapest in the UK. If I had my own place, even if it was a tiny apartment, I'd be broke as fuck and with utilities on top I probably wouldn't even be able to eat.

It's not an easy language you need passion of you really want to get good. If you live here and can speak the language and live outside Tokyo people will be really friendly, they for the most part love foreigners who have come here and learnt their language. It's not a joke when I say I get randomly asked to go drinking, or over to someone's house for dinner after meeting them randomly. You won't be annoying if you learn the societies rules and speak their language politely, they'll love it

You're going to want to start doing flash cards for vocabulary and kanji knowledge as soon as possible after you learn the basic alphabet. I recommend the application "anki" and download some core 2000 word deck, there's tons of them. It'll give you the biggest boost over anyone else.

its not as it looks in anime or tv. I'm half Japanese and I was an English teacher while I took care of my grandmother. The weather is awful, everything is expensive but convenient, everyone is anti social or have some sort of xenophobic hate towards non Japanese or non conformists, the food is sub par and very unhealthy. Don't get me started about the older generation in and out of the work place. Only thing to do after work on my salary was drink and try to get lucky with bar skanks. The sites are cool though, I would recommend it for a vacation.
