Why? What do you consider so bad about taking in refugees? Is it national pride? The idea that we are superior to everybody else for reasons? Are you afraid of what is different?

To me, it just makes no sense. Many countries in Europe actually need the refugees because they're lacking many workers in specific domains like construction sites or medic assistants, since pretty much none of the local citizen want to fill in those spots. Also, refugees are much more useful/beneficial to a society than homeless or jobless people (purely from a financial point of view; of course NEETs motivate others to participate in this capitalist system).

But yeah, I'd honestly want to understand why refugees are not wanted.

There's the crime and terrorism too. If the same kind of people that the refugees are fleeing from follow them, then it defeats the point of seeking refuge entirely. Doesn't matter if the likelihood of a migrant or muslim being a terrorist is 1 in 100 or 1 in a million, it's just not a risk that any sensible country should take.

EU countries have no choice in the matter, though. Instead of imposing any sort of controls, Merkel simply flung the doors wide open to anybody and everybody.

Everything you said is wrong.

Many countries in the EU have housing shortages and rampant unemployment/underemployment. Many have over burdened welfare systems due to their aging populations. Therefore they cannot even afford to house, educate and regularise these refugees not to mention the families they will send for in the near future. Most are not qualified to for skilled/educated labor and would spend years on welfare before they could even begin to pay into the system. Those funds would be better spent on the native population to revitalize the economies. Most are not even refugees from Syria but immigrants from other muslim countries. They are opportunists and no different from illegals who entered the EU in the preceding years.

Normal immigration doesn't occur in such huge numbers. The sheer amount of them ensures that they will end up living in ethnic enclaves which means that they will not integrate into wider society. I'm not even speculating, it's something my family has observed in muslim immigrants for the last two decades even though the rates were much lower and the restrictions were much more stringent.
