Not the post you responded to, but Singapore is pretty authoritarian, drug users, even weed smokers are put to death. You get outrageous fines even for spitting gum outside. You also have to pay a lot of money for a license to own a car, not a driver's license, but after that, if you want to be able to drive a car there you have to buy a license that is limited to a certain amount of people for 10s of thousands of dollars.

Eh, the living standards there are decent for the region. For the middle class (note: middle class Singaporean = upper class North American almost) the living quality is what I'd describe as equal to the North American standard, but there's also a very visible difference between the lower classes not as visible in the west.

I'm mainly bitter about National Service, but that in mind I will say that Singapore really only benefits the rich. From what I've seen, a large or sizable amount of the population lives what I would describe as the "second world" lifestyle despite Singapore supposedly being a first world country- the city also has no minimum wage (with the unspoken minimum being 6$ SGD) and an unfree culture.

The lower/working classes here live absolutely terribly. The middle-class lifestyle, from my point of view, is not as good as the working-class lifestyle in Canada, what with the expenses of the city, everything being so cramped, etc- people stay at their parents' homes well into their 30s and if they don't get married their 40s, and it just really isn't compatible.

And of course, there's the NS which I mentioned, which makes me really bitter because I really am being treated like (and I am) the property of the government.

I came here intending to serve NS at first while my life was in a bit of a rut, but by now I realize I've been cucked majorly by Singapore- I can't denounce my citizenship till I'm 21 and they would likely not allow it anyways considering I've yet to do NS- and they basically would try to keep me trapped in the country for 2 years. As soon as I'm done I'm getting rid of my citizenship rather than spending 40 years "obligated" to be a reservist.

Overall I'd say more than anything else (as anything you'll read about Singapore will say) the food is notable. Culture-wise, sightseeing, etc... Singapore is actually pretty lacking. Good food, if not probably one of the best places around for food though. Not that I'd traveled much or at all before coming here.

However, honestly Singaporeans are typically quite well brainwashed by their one-party government. When talking to people I've heard on multiple occasions things such as that "Indonesia and Malaysia would invade Singapore immediately without NS" or that "Singapore is the best place for Chinese, elsewhere including the west you are a second class citizen."

One common example used (or rather the only one) is an attack over 50 years ago by Indonesia called "konfrontasi" or some shit, despite the complete irrelevance to the modern political landscape for the region.

I'm not even completely against conscription (despite disagreeing with it strongly and having no interest in serving Singapore of all places) but the way it is done here really pisses me off. It's basically a way for the local government to drain more labor from its citizens without paying properly at all- with the average conscript being paid 560$ after the latest increase. Note that Singapore is an extremely expensive country, too.

I'm being fined for coming a year late. Adding to that, I can't leave the country. Singaporean NS is particularly unfree, though I suppose that could be described about just about anything in Singapore compared to the west. Singaporeans are generally ungrateful about NS- not that I would expect gratitude, but it's basically seen as "what everyone does" and left at that. If anything there are those who are angry at expats or women for not doing it, and the concept of both groups doing it is considered open for discussion.
