I'm also 1997 and I agree with these people in that the internet was better before smartphones/tablets and before social media was ubiquitous. 2010 for me is the turning point when these two factors kicked in big time. Before that, there was social media but it wasn't EVERYWHERE and people weren't constantly connected like they are now. People would log on to Facebook/MySpace at a desktop/laptop and browse in one setting rather than having their interactions dripfed to them constantly throughout the day like people have today with 4G and Wi-Fi everywhere. Smartphones for me became widespread in 2010. Even in as recent at 2008, people were still using bar phones and flip phones with basic operating systems designed by the phone's manufacturer. Maybe it's just nostalgia that the internet seemed more wholesome before I was 12 but I definitely think it was a better experience before everything was centralised onto social media. I miss when it was about discussing interests on forums instead of being constantly connected to IRL friends on Facebook and Twitter. If I feel that way about the internet in the 2000s then I can imagine how some of these people miss Web 1.0 and Usenet.
