I have the original image as one layer, than I duplicate it as a new layer, add a semi-transparent solid layer of a single color in between, and finally add a layer mask (black with full transparency) to the top layer.

Then I use the circle tool to select and delete areas from the layer mask on the top layer.

Finally, I go in and edit the bottom layer to make it beautiful, using the clone, repair, and smudge tools to get rid of clothes, and finishing up with a gaussian blur over the whole bottom layer.

Probably overkill, but it's fun to see the results.
