Looking to get into visual novels and games, is there any program that I need to start buying and playing? Getting tired of torrenting games that don't work or have a broken language, and i'd rather support the creators now that I have a better income.

I don't know what games you have been torrenting, but generally VNs will work if you've set your computer to Japanese locale. Perhaps you have not?
