I found this shell of a giant clam when in 2004 on the coast of the red sea. I saw a BBC news article today about a guy who found the world's biggest pearl and it reminded me of this.
It has a material on the inside that is very smooth and somewhat transparant. It also has a spherical deposit of this material in the middle of the shell. It looks a bit like pearl.
What I want to know is, is this material pearl? Do any of you know how I can identify whether it is pearl or not?
(Coin for scale, it weighs about 330 grams.)

As you can see in this one, the interior material is a separate material from the outer shell of the clam.

Close up of the sphere in the middle of the shell. It looks like it has formed separately from the rest of the material.
