You are Abramov Yegor (Jora) Georgiy, a nineteen-year-old university graduate from Moscow who was conscripted into the Red Army as a combat engineer due to your background as a student in engineering (and Marxist studies). Before being conscripted, you held a membership in the CPSU and were an ardent patriot ready to die in the defense of the motherland. That was of course until you actually stepped on the battlefield.

The story so far:

Last time on Conscriptquest you managed to successfully fight your way out certain death and escape encirclement during the evacuation of the Estonian SSR's capital Tallinn by hitching a ride on board a submarine alongside your new female comrade and personal doctor Valera. You and the rest of the Red Navy's Baltic Fleet are both now on your way to the city known among Soviet citizens as the birthplace of the revolution, Leningrad.

As you climb your way on top of the command tower for tonight's watch duty, you are eagerly waiting to see the much talked about city of Lenin come into your view at any moment.

You had never visited the city itself before since you had been stuck in Moscow with your studies most of the time for the past several years, the rest of the time you just didn't really care about travelling and instead most of your time reading and living a quiet life in your apartment.

When you reach the top of the tower you're suprised by how empty the outside of the vessel is with only three men actually being there. Two manning the heavy AA gun and one sitting in the command tower acting as a spotter.

>"Hey, I'm here for the switch."

I really gotta go after this post, getting pretty tired and can't concentrate on writing. Good thing there's no work to be done tomorrow, at least outside home maybe. See ya'll then da svydanya.

You lightly tap the spotter in front of you on his shoulder and he quickly turns around in a startled manner before relaxing as he sees you.

"See anything interesting?" You ask him as you raise your own borrowed binoculars to your eye level and survey the sea around you for dangers.

"Not much, can't really see shit in the near-complete darkness." He responds sarcastically as he too goes back to surveying the environment.

There's a tense silence between both of you, which you attempt to break to the best of your ability.

"How long is the estimate till we reach Leningrad?" You ask curiously, looking towards one of the destroyers that was still left intact after the remnants of the refugee fleet came under attack by German dive bomber squadrons.

"Judging by what the navigator told me earlier, about two hours give or take." He responds to you dryly while lowering his binoculars down.

You don't immediately respond though as you could have sworn you saw something in the water.

"What the hell..." You think out loud as you see what looks to be a giant metal ball floating on the surface.

"What? What did you see." The spotter asks as he turns to look towards the same direction as you. "MINEFIELD!" He manages to yell just as one of the destroyers nearby is rocked by a massive explosion from its bow section.

I think the second option is the pretty clear winner here.

Also hope everyone's enjoying the holidays, I sure know I am.

"Report to the control room, I'll stay on the lookout!" You yell to the sailor next to you, coming out a lot harsher than you intended in your ordering.

He seems to be somewhat startled by our authoritative tone but follows his orders nonetheless.

You have to squint your eyes heavily to see the barest of outlines of the mines directly ahead of you due to the fact that almost all of them are completely submerged underwater in the shallow gulf you're navigating through.

'If only we had a spotlight to help search them.' You think to yourself while continuing to relay directions down the hatch so the sub can attempt to avoid the mines in its immediate vicinity.

>Request a searchlight or any form of lighting to help with spotting the mines before you hit something you're not supposed to

Anon... I didn't ask bad rolls for Christmas...

Your limited ability to see and the resulting spotting ability ends up being costly as the sub's bow section crashes straight into a mine, causing an explosion that rocks the whole vessel and throws you off your feet.

"We're taking in water!" A desperate cry can be heard from within the confines of the ship as everyone quickly begins scrambling to action, trying to stop the flooding.

"Full stop damnit!" You can hear the voice of the captain over everyone else's shouting.

You now face a critical decision, you can either risk going down with the ship to go activate the bilge pump or attempt to help as many of those on board as possible abandon ship and attempt to head towards the other ones that are still afloat.

What will you do?

You figure that since it was your mistake that the sub crashed into the mine in the first place you decide to also own up to your mistake and attempt your best to fix the problem.

And by fixing you mean activate the anti-flooding measures through the bilge pump, so the personnel on board the ship have time to evacuate the vessel on time.

You quickly slide down the hatch, being careful not to land on top of anyone running around in the the control center as they attempt to organize a proper evacuation from the vessel.

"Everyone get topside, she's going down to the depths and she's going down fast!" The captain yelled over the chaos as people began scrambling for the only ladder leading to the deck.

"I'm heading towards the engine room's bilge pump to help stop the flooding!" You yell to the captain who looks to you like you've gone completely mad.

"Are you out of your mind!? This vessel is sinking deeper by the minute, you'll drown!" The XO asks as he walks right next to us, having the same expression as the captain.

"I'm saving as many lives as I can, don't try to stop me." You say as you turn around and head towards the back end of the ship.

As you reach the sickbay, you notice that most of the wounded are still lying in their beds, unable to move.

You also notice to your horror that Valera has been knocked unconscious, her forehead bleeding after it apparently hit the side of one of the bed frames.

>Continue heading towards the bilge pump and hope someone else helps them

Buy time, and save the nurse if no one else. Maybe the damage isn't so bad and the pump lets the ship make the rest of the journey, or maybe there is a door we can shut and section off the sub.
>>
>>971471
>Pick up Valera and carry her outside
Valera first, if we carry the wounded without a doctor then they would still die. Her doctor skills will be invaluable now. We also get to be closer with her

>Continue heading towards the bilge pump and hope someone else helps them

Unless we decide to go down with the ship, on the way back we are going to pass through the med bay I assume, we can pick up Valera on the way out. We should slow or stop the taking of water on the sub.

You decide to keep heading forward, jumping over some of the wounded men who have fallen off their beds as you continue heading towards the engine room.

You soon reach the engine room, which by now is also covered with the bodies of sailors who have either died or simple been rendered unconscious from the head trauma they received

You look around for the valve that turns on the automatic bilge pump, which you soon find and begin to turn with all your strength.

>Throw 1d20 + 5 for strength check with bonus for adrenaline.

>>
>>971637

By putting every bit of your strength into your effort, you manage to slowly begin turning the valve forward until the all of the pumps parts are completely operational and begin fighting the flooding in the bow section.

Having managed to at least slow the flooding, if not completely stop it you quickly rush back towards the sickbay.

When you reach the section, you check up on Valera whose still lying on the ground, her head still bleeding from the hit it took.

>Look around for bandages to patch her head up
>No time to waste, you have to get her out now
>You need to help those who are able to walk on their own first so they can get out of their beds in their weakened state and reach the exit safely
>Forget them, you still have to check that the front section is properly sealed while the pumps remove the excess water that has already gotten in

You begin helping the wounded out of their beds and escort them to the ladder one by one where the rest of the crew who is still on board help them climb up.

The task is a gruelingly slow one and grates your already stretched nerves to their limits as you don't know how long the pumps can keep fighting against the flooding of the bow section.

When you manage to get the last of the wounded up the ladder you turn back one more time to get Valera before being stopped by the captain who grabs your shoulder.

"Come on, we have to get out of here." He says to you, you can already see some of the water fill the floor as it soaks your boots, indicating that the front section couldn't be sealed on time or that it failed to seal despite the crew's efforts possibly due to extensive damage to the hull's supports structure.

"I still have to get Valera out!" You say as you wiggle your way out of his hold and rush back towards the sickbay.

"Chyort, that man's fucking crazy." You can hear him say after you exit the control room.

You can already feel the sub's bow begin to tilt as it sinks to the bottom due to how it feels like you're running uphill to reach your destination.

By the time you reach the sickbay and manage to grab hold of Valeria along with her medical bag, the sub has already started to tilt heavily downwards and making it hard for you to remain on your feet.

>Throw strength check with 1d20 + 5 to see if you can carry your female comrade back to the exit on time, again bonus for adrenaline.

At least nobody rolled a Nat 1.

With the roar that would probably scare a bear, you hoisted your female comrade into a fireman's carry and began stumbling towards the exit, careful not to slip and fall down the steepening floor of the unceremoniously sinking submarine.

By the time you manage to reach the control room the whole middle of the sub has already become flooded all the way to your waistline and you have little time to waste.

"Come on Yegor!" The captain yells to you as he offers you his hand down the hatch.

With an almost superhuman effort, you use your one free hand to place Valera onto your shoulder and hold her there while using the other hand to climb your way up the ladder the water fast following in your wake as the sub continues to sink.

You take the hand offered by the captain as with the help of him and another crewman you climb on top of the command tower.

You see one of the remaining destroyers has parked next to the sub and is helping to pick up the crew members and the wounded passengers

With the last ounces of your strength you manage to carry both of you to the destroyer, where the crewmen help you on board.

Everyone seems to be completely in awe at what you just managed to do and are looking at you with a sense of respect and admiration.

You don't get to enjoy the attention though as the adrenaline finally seems to have ran out and you collapse right then and there onto the deck, your eyes starting to feel heavy while your mind is at peace knowing that you managed to save everyone you possibly could.

And then... you're fast asleep.

During the first part of your dream, you find yourself walking on a foggy street before abruptly coming to a stop at a steel gate.

Behind the steel gates lies a grave yard that feels familiar in some way to you but you don't know why, but as you head in through the gates you begin to hear whispers around you.

"Abandoned..." A voice whispers, barely audible.

"Forgotten..." Another one calls out, slightly louder.

"Left behind..." A third one angrily grunts, even louder.

Soon you come across a large, pitch black hole in the ground with a wooden coffin lying next to it, the coffin is open but there's nothing inside when you turn to look towards it.

"Treachery..." The voices return once more.

"Betrayal..."

"Treason..."

Soon a group of ghastly looking figures start appearing around you from the fog, eventually surrounding you.

"The price of your crimes..."

"Must be...

"Paid back in full..." The last voice says as an unseen force pushes you into the coffin and closes the lid in your face.

You don't even have time to scream as you are thrown into the hole in the ground and swallowed by the darkness within.

During the second part of your dream you find yourself lying face-down in a wheat field that seems to go on endlessly in every direction you glance towards.

When looking back in front of you, you can see a figure waving towards you in the distance and you awkwardly wave back towards them, not really knowing what else to do.

You both then begin to approach each other slowly, that is of course until you can clearly see who the figure is at which point your slow walk turns to a sprint

Its Valeria, and she's in her usual medic uniform with the exception of her head which is uncovered. Showing off her flowing light brown hair in its full glory, her steps are graceful as she approaches you and hugs you.

Weirdly enough you don't actually say anything to each other, you just stand there in the middle of the golden field of wheat and hug each other like you were some long lost friends meeting each other after years of separation.

You didn't really have a word to describe the sensation, the closest one you could come up with was one that you heard a British exchange student say once when you felt a weird feeling inside of your chest while looking at some of your female classmates.

"Butterflies in your stomach..."

After that weird but oddly satisfying phase of your dream was over, the rest of it was a garbled mess that you couldn't really keep track off until you were finally torn out by a familiar voice telling you to wake up.

You woke up to see the bandaged up face of Valeria in front of you, she a concerned look on her face as she stared into your eyes as if waiting for you to say something.

Its getting kinda late, I'll be off to sleep now.

Goodnight ya'll!

"Are you... alright?" You ask with a hint of concern, which seems to surprise the nurse. "You looked like you were in pretty bad shape when I carried you out of the sickbay back on the sub."

She remains silent for a moment, rubbing the bridge of her nose contemplatively.

"Besides the headache and the occasional dizziness, I'm fine." She eventually answers.

You bot remain in an awkward silence before you remember the other question you wanted to badly ask due to the dreams you were having.

"How many?"

"What?" She responds, seemingly not understanding the question you just posed.

"How many did we lose...?" You ask again almost immediately, your voice slightly shaky at the thought of how many lives were lost during the entire voyage from Tallinn

"We... only have estimates." She replies to our query in a nervous manner, gulping before she actually revealed the numbers. "The current ones range anywhere from a few hundred to over ten-thousand in total."

I'm fortunately not dead yet folks!

Sorry about the long wait, I kind of ran out of creative juices for a while and had to take a break and do something else for a change.

I'm back now tho.

"That's... quite a lot..." You say with a noticeable sense of disturbed awe in your voice. "This discussion is pretty depressing and its not really mine to worry about so let's talk about something less..." You pause trying to find the proper word. "Saddening..."

"Uh..." Valera says, raising a questioning eyebrow at you. "Okay... what else did you wish to talk about?"

Her question has significantly increased the level of awkwardness within the room and you figure that you should probably check up on your injuries to see if they've already healed to turn the situation away from the more weird side.

"What are my injuries, did I get any new ones during the trip? Have my old ones already healed?" You ask her in a neutral tone and wait for her to regain her composure and answer your questions.

"Your shoulder wound has almost completely healed, you didn't get any injuries during our trip on the sea so by my standards you should be good enough to head back into the front lines as soon as you get your equipment back." She explains to you in a calm and collected manner, sighing at the end to indicate that she's pretty much done with our weird antics.

"Alright, good to hear." You say as you throw off the sheets and begin to put your uniform back on. "Thanks."

By the time you finish putting on all of your clothes and you turn to look around though, you can see that Valera has already left you alone in the empty room.
