You are Blundren Fuul, inheritor of a small fortune of wealth left over after the death of your father, Aepity De Fuul, suddenly died in his sleep. Being a baron of some holdings, mostly farmland, his death did not go unmissed among the greater nobility of the Duchy of York. The morning after the death of your father, a rider arrived at your family home. He hands you a letter, addressed to you from Richard, Duke of York. He gives his condolences at your father's death and his congratulations at your inheritance. He makes a proposal.

>Forfeit %10 of your father's holdings as an inheritance tax

Or

>Give the whole of the property over to the Duke, and receive an untaxed lump sum of 2500 pounds sterling (L)

You know little of the value of your fathers lands, nor how to run them. You spent most of your days burning through a generous allowance with travel, ale, and prostitutes. You suppose you could learn how to run the family farm, if you wanted too.
>>
>>942280
Forfeit 10% of the holdings as inheritance tax. Does not matter when we are, selling land wholesale is a surefire way to loose Nobility.
"When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things."
Also, what is the Date? important for knowing appropriate behavior.
>>
>forfeit 10% of the land
>>

1454. Please, do not expect me to be seriously historically accurate. I only have a laymans idea what is going on at this time and location.
>>
>>942292
Don't expect you to, just wanted to know so I don't try to start building cloth mills on our land over 300 years before the industrial revolution.
>>
>>942280
>>Forfeit %10 of your father's holdings as an inheritance tax
Ask our lawyers if we can lower this percentage. And we will choose the worst 10%, of course.
>>
>>942295
Hes our leige. I think we have to give him the parts that border on his current territory. Also, a member of the Royal Family by shafting him with lawyers and cheapness is a very bad idea.
>>
You decide to forfeit %10 of the holdings, and the rider sighs with distaste. He stays the night to perform an audit of your lands, and you have a few peasants give you and he the tour of the lands. He estimates that your barony is worth approximately 4000 L and produces crops in excess that could generate 200L per year for the land holder.

The auditor places the inheritance tax at 400L. He estimates an annual tax at 100L per year.

>Sell 500L worth of farmland, paying your inheritance tax and annual tax presently.

>Sell 400L of farm land, ask for forgiveness for this year's tax.

>Have a few burly peasants threaten the auditor so he will lower your rate.
>>
>>942304
>Sell 500L worth of farmland.
We need to be on good terms with the Duke, since he has no prior knowledge of us. Also, once we sell our land, our tax rate should drop. Threatening the man will lead to him coming back with bailiffs.
>>
>>942280
Also, love the pun OP.
>>
>>942304
>>Sell 400L of farm land, ask for forgiveness for this year's tax.
Don't sell our silverware! We can get a loan but we can't get land just like that...
>>
You sell the farmland necessary to pay the tax, including the labor of the people who live on it, to the Duke of York. The auditor smirks as you sign the documentation.
He informs you that your new tax rate is 100L per year.

You can extrapolate that the value of your land is now 3500L with an annual income of 175L.

Your profit, after tax to your lord, Richard of York, is now 75L per year.

You know this is quite a poor sum of annual profit, but it does allow you to live at a relatively high standard.

Since you have decided to keep the barony of Fuul in your capable hands, it's upkeep is thrust upon you.

How do you manage your lands?

>By hiring a constable to keep the peasants working hard and behaving (20L per year)

>By selecting the most knowledgeable of the elders among your peasants as an advisor, taking him into your house (50L per year)
>>
Right we are border lords. So if we need more money, we team up with some other nobles of similar rank, and go steal some poor scottish bastards cattle. I'd prefer the constable, since he is cheaper and is less likely to show favoritism.
>>
>>942329
>By selecting the most knowledgeable of the elders among your peasants as an advisor, taking him into your house (50L per year)

They probably know the peasants better than we do

You hold a few impromptu meetings with the peasants in their hovels. You find an old man by the name of Fritzem and grant him a few rooms in your home. He is extremely greatful, and claims that with his guidance you can increase the crop output to 250L worth of crops per year in excess.

Paying close attention, you learn some of the fundamentals of agriculture from Fritzem, and feel you have made a good investment.

Months pass, and the harvest goes well. Your land generates 250L worth of excess crops.

It will soon be time for the tax collector to visit.

>Hide some of your excess so he does not increase the tax on your land

>Pay your current tax rate, but do not hide your excess. If he asks to audit the lands, bribe him with 10L

>Pay your current tax rate, do not hide your excess, forcefully refuse an audit
>>
>>942352
>Pay current tax rate, do not hide your excess, forcefully refuse an audit.
King John signed Magna Carta into law from pressure by the Barons. This protects our rights, and forces all to act under the law. Our tax rate is 100, and until the Duke authorises an audit, we do not need to submit to an audit.
>>

When the tax man arrives, he arrived with a retinue of armed guards. One of them wearing the crest of Nottinghamshire, a neighboring land of great influence.

The tax man requires your payment of 100L and no more. He informs you that the Duke of York has become Lord Protector of the realm, after King Henry VI fell ill.
He asks that your peasants pray for the recovery of the King, and sleep soundly in the knowledge that their Lord Richard of York will protect the realm.
He also tells you that he is leaving behind the soldier with the crest of Nottinghamshire. He informs you that he is Sir John II of Nottinghamshire, son of the High Sheriff.

The young man tells you he will be in charge of training a small platoon of troops from your barony. They will be under his command, and you will fund their arms and training, as is your duty to your Lord.

>Refuse to allow Sir Nottinghamshire to train troops in your barony

>Allow the troop training, but force him to raise the money himself

>Fund the raising of a platoon of troops from your barony, give Nottinghamshire a place in your house, and in return demand usage of the platoon at a later date (100L per year)
>>
>>942370
>Allow the troop training, but force him to raise the money himself
I am almost certain it is not our obligations to pay for military training. The government does that using the taxes we pay.
>>
>>942370
>Fund the raising of a platoon of troops from your barony, give Nottinghamshire a place in your house, and in return demand usage of the platoon at a later date (100L per year)
Being on good terms with the Lord Protector, and with a powerful neighbour is the best way to ensure our survival. Also, it gives us a skilled soldier and a small amount of troops, perfect for any unpleasantness that might occur.

You give Nottinghamshire some equipment, and allow him his selection of peasants. He picks about 15, and sets out to test their skills with a bow.

Eventually, you learn the truth about the platoon. It will be one of many units that will hold the borders of York should the Duke fail in his designs for the crown of England.

>You will not support treason, even if the treasoner is your Lord, disband the platoon, banish Nottinghamshire from Fuul. By remaining loyal to the King, you save yourself from the kind of retribution the platoon would be necessary to defend against.

>You do not care to guess at what will happen as a result of the Duke's actions, but find that in any situation an armed platoon at your disposal would be advantageous.
>>

>You will not support treason, even if the treasoner is your Lord, disband the platoon, banish Nottinghamshire from Fuul. By remaining loyal to the King, you save yourself from the kind of retribution the platoon would be necessary to defend against.

Nah I don't feel like treason.
>>
>>942378
>You will not support treason, even if the treasoner is your Lord, disband the platoon, banish Nottinghamshire from Fuul. By remaining loyal to the King, you save yourself from the kind of retribution the platoon would be necessary to defend against.
No treason. Also, if the King did win and we supported the Duke, 15 archers does jack shit.
>>
You disband the platoon. You are lucky Nottinghamshire enjoyed his drink, and you caught wind of the plan.
You are now baron of a barony under a Duke that wishes to usurp the throne from the King of England. How do you proceed?

>Refuse to pay taxes to the Duke of York, risk York's wrath if he wins the crown.

>Refuse to pay taxes to the Duke of York, raise a small militia for defense, ensure your death at the hands of Richard of York if he becomes King.

>Refuse to pay taxes, raise a militia, send word to allies of your late father who wish to remain loyal to the King of England. Maybe they'll make you a saint one day.
>>
>>942385
>Refuse to pay taxes, raise a militia, send word to allies of your late father who wish to remain loyal to the King of England. Maybe they'll make you a saint one day.

This is an unpleasant situation

Only real option. At least this way, we retain some chance of relief
Time to Robin Hood this up boys!

You send word, and the coming months are filled with preparations. You create a secret order called Yorkshire Red Roses, after the crest of the King, the red rose of House Lancaster.

You are a member, as are the barons of Beverly and Kingston.

By refusing to pay taxes, the entirety of your pooled funds per yer, barring the sale of holdings, would equal to 750L per year. This could effectively field an army of 1000 soldiers for a period of two months.

Retaining this as a last resort plan, you all stand resolutely for the next visit from the tax collector. It never comes.

Eventually, travelers reach you from the capital. They say King Henry has regained his senses, and York has been banished!
You wonder what will become of the lands of Yorkshire, without a Lord.

>Maintain loyalty to the King, maintain your ability to field and army. Try to make contact with the crown to figure out how to proceed.

>Disband the league, celebrate victory for the King of England and wait for the new tax collector to show his face.
>>
>>942411
>Maintain loyalty to the King, maintain your ability to field and army. Try to make contact with the crown to figure out how to proceed.

We don't disband till the king gives the word.

I doubt that the Duke was without support in yorkshire, and having men to call upon will be useful, till the King says otherwise.

You maintain your alligiences and your agreements to field an army should the need arise.
Soon, a rider makes his way down the long road toward your barony. A nephew of Fritzem's happened to be at a tavern that the rider visited for a nights rest. He learned that the rider was a scout for the King's forces, and that an army marched to exact revenge on those who turned against him.
He listed your barony as one of those that continued to pay tax after learning of the Duke's attempts, and you are charged with the raising of an army for rebellion against the King.
The boy dared not refute these claims to the rider, but brings you the news now.

>Seek out the rider, explain the situation to him. Show him the order of the Yorkshire Red Roses. Prove that you are and have been loyal to King Henry.

>Recognize that news travels slowly, and that you may not have time to negotiate before the King's army arrives on your borders. Field the army in defense of your Barony.

>Attempt to surrender when the King's armies arrive, so that you can negotiate. There is no telling if they will accept surrender.

A few of your peasants bring forward the dirty bedraggled form of John Nottinghamshire from amongst their midst. It seems he sought refuge among your peasants when his own lands were razed by the King. He offers you information on how to proceed, if you spare his life

>Spare him, though this will ensure that there is no alternative but to submit to being a treasoner by suffering him to live
>>
>>942437
>Seek out the rider, explain the situation to him. Show him the order of the Yorkshire Red Roses. Prove that you are and have been loyal to King Henry.

Do not spare him.
We cannot be called a treasoner.
>>
>>942437
>Seek out the rider, explain the situation to him. Show him the order of the Yorkshire Red Roses. Prove that you are and have been loyal to King Henry.

>Hand John of Nottingham over to the King as a sign of our loyalty
>>
You seek out the rider, and spend many days and many man-hours searching the roads of Yorkshire. You find no trace of the rider, but do see the devastation the King's armies have brought to neighboring baronies. They must be close by.

>Raise the army, attempt to surrender.

>Don't raise the army, attempt to surrender.

>Raise the army, defend your lives and your homes.

The Barons of Kingston and Beverly announce that they will disband the order upon surrender, as it will no longer be necessary after the king reassigns the land to a new Duke.
>>

Maybe greet greet them with a nice large white flag
>>
>>942304

We can come up with the annual tax later. Better to get the big payments out of the way first.
>>
>>942453
>Don't raise the army, attempt to surrender.
Mercy and the Prisoner might help us maybe
>>
You agree to wait, in your lands. Your people settle down into their work, and things grow quiet for a week or two. You keep John Nottinghamshire in a pit behind one of the peasants homes. You intend to turn him in to the King as proof of your loyalty. He becomes known colloquially as John of the Pit.

Eventually the day comes, as their is a report of a few peasants shot dead by archers in the western valley of your barony.

>Ride out to meet them yourself, John Nottinghamshire in tow, with a small group of armed peasants

>Send riders everywhere to tell peasants to lay down arms and give no resistance, and to instruct soldiers to the pit of John of Nottinghamshire

>Call to arms, the killing of your people is an act of war
>>
>>942467
>Send riders everywhere to tell peasants to lay down arms and give no resistance, and to instruct soldiers to the pit of John of Nottinghamshire

We can't fight the bloody king, especially after he has just crushed his major opposition, and our allies won't back us up.
>>
>>942467
>Send riders everywhere to tell peasants to lay down arms and give no resistance, and to instruct soldiers to the pit of John of Nottinghamshire

The king will fuck our shit up if we fight him.
