Somalia 1991:
Background: Your name is Mohammed Rafat, you were born in July 2nd 1944 in Mogadishu, Somalia to a father of a former Italian Ascari who fought in the East African Campaign during WW2. You graduated out of the Somali National University in 1965 with an Engineering Degree and a Bachelors Degree, you later opened up an auto mechanic store in Mogadishu where you were able to get money to support you and your family. In 1975, you met a woman named Sheegan whom you loved ever since and in 1983 both of you got married. In 1984, you gave birth to a daughter named Warem but sadly, your wife died during birth, leaving you a single father. Pay starts becoming expensive, your years start growing difficult as you don't have enough money to support your daughter and your shop, but you keep going strong as you want your daughter, who is now 7 years old, to have a bright future and live a better life.
May 2nd 1991:
Over the last few month, you have watched your city slowly turn into a war zone. After the government was overthrown by rebel leaders this January, several fronts started fighting for power, millions of people are dying every day from gun battle or mortar shells, you start getting worried about your daughter as you know you don't want her to grow up in this environment so you start doing everything to protect her from the outside world.
The next day, a Mortar shell falls down on your house, destroying part of the house but leaving everyone okay. It was at this point that you've had enough of this battle so you start pacing up your bags to leave this god-forsaken country. you don't have that much space though so you should only pack some stuff that are important.
what will you pack? you can only pick five.

After you have finished packing up your stuff, you then pick up your daughter and walk out of the city, only problem: half the city is dangerous and you are in rebel territory, you want a safe route out of the city for your daughter. After noticing that the Northwest region doesn't have that much violence, you decide to escape from that direction. As you are walking out of the city, you notice the city you grew up in has changed dramatically. the mosque you used to pray in has been destroyed, the park you played in as a child is now filled with craters and abandoned tanks, and your former school is now a rebel command center. after walking out of the city, you then join a group of refugees who are also fleeing the city, after asking one of them where they are going, they said they don't know, they are just trying to get far away from the city as possible.
You then learn that it isn't only Mogadishu that is riddled with violence, after getting a hold of a portable radio, you learn that parts of Somalia is also at war, the Northern Reigon is trying to gain Independence, and there is a major drought occuring in the East. realising that your country has no future, you decide that the only solution is to escape to Kenya, which is West. only Problem, the next town, Afgoye is also undergoing a major battle, should you walk past through the city and resupply your food, or avoid the city and walk west which is safer

Not wanting to risk your daughter's life, you decide to stop at Lafoole where, although there isn't that much food, you are able to get enough to resupply food that will last you at least 5 days. After resupplying, you then cut through the rebel held area and go west.
For days you have been walking towards the Kenyan border, throughout this journey, you meet another group of people who have the same idea as you, you nearly missed an airstrike that killed half the people in your group, and because your daughter's legs have been getting tired from walking around, you decide to carry her throughout the journey.
A week passes and already you are losing food. the group decide to make a small camp and rest from all the walking, but the problem is that everyone is also losing food. slowly, you, your daughter, and everyone grows hungry, you start seeing people die from starvation, the children are the first victim. while holding your almost fragile daughter, she then tell you something:
Warem: aabbihiis, d..do aad qabto cunto?
Translation: (F..Father, d..do you have food?)
You then look into your bag but you notice that there is only one loaf of bread left, You want to give your daughter the bread but You yourself are also weak from hunger. how are you going to solve this problem?

You then proceed to tear the bread in half and give the bigger piece to your daughter which she eats quickly, she is one of the few children's lucky to survive the mass hunger occurring at the camp but you worry about your daughter's life. you feel that she isn't going to survive this journey and won't live long to see safety. As days pass, new people start entering the camp, some who escaped violence in other parts of the country. At times, you would see white journalists who would come and take pictures of the camp but you know they won't do anything to help as they are journalists. the situation in the camp becomes more dire and as each day passes, you start to feel that you won't be able to survive this war.
The next day, as you are sitting in your tent, you suddenly hear gunfire. the rebels have infiltrated the camps, they order everyone to stand and line up, they are looking for new recruits.
Rebel Leader: "maqli up, waxaa socda gaaban askari oo cusub, oo aan raadinayso dagaalyahaniin si ay uga caawiyaan dagaalka ka dhanka ah SPM ah. sidaa darteed waxaan ku baran doonnaa nimankii si ay nooga caawiyaan dagaallamo."
Translation (listen up, we are running short of new soldiers, and we are looking for recruits to help fight against the SPM. so we will be taking the men to help us fight against them.)
Rebel Leader: "hubi in aad qaadato nimankii, ka tago haweenka iyo carruurta oo keliya!"
Translation (make sure you take the men, leave the women and children alone!)
As the rebels start taking the mens, the screams of the women and children grows as families start being torn apart. a rebel starts walking to you and forcibly ask you to join them. you don't want to join them because you are the only parent your daughter has and you can't leave her.

You don't want to join them but you know that if you refuse, you will risk you or your own daughter's life. Realizing there is no other option, you decide to turn to the other lady next to you and say:
You: "halkan, is ogow of gabadhayda ... fadlan. is ogow wanaagsan iyada"
Translation: (here, take care of my daughter... please. take good care of her)
You then watch as your daughter cries and begs you not to leave as you give the lady your daughter. As you are getting dragged away, you look at your daughter for the last time as she tries to run towards you but the lady grabs her from the arm and hug her.
You and the other men are then forced marched to the nearby town of Buur Hakaba which the rebels have captured just a day earlier. They then give you guns and tell you that you will be now working for us and that anyone caught deserting will be shot.
