Welcome to the City of Souls quest.

The City of Akendor was once one of the greatest in the world. One day, it was destroyed. How is unknown, because no one survived the incident. At least, no one who's talking. The Templars quickly moved in to control the situation, but found the city had become a strange nightmare realm, where the boundary between the physical and mental realms had blurred, even ceased to exist. The population, some half a million people, have not gone to their rest quietly, and haunt the city to this day, though their exact states vary.

You are one such lost soul, and this quest is your story.

Last time, you discovered your name is Tallia, were joined by the spirit of your deceased dog, and have successfully beheaded but not killed the first other being you managed to meet.

The beheaded ghoul stands in front of you, unmoving. Without eyes, ears or nose it has nothing to react to, you suppose. With your heart calming down to a beat once every few seconds, as seems to be your norm now, you relax a little. You still sidle backwards until you can pick up the chairleg lying on the floor though. With a weapon in hand you feel a little more secure, though you aren't sure quite how well your shrivelled, stiffened limbs could swing it.

Akko stands ready at your side. You have vague memories of how he ripped the ghoul's head off, and in them his shadow-flesh seemed to be far darker and larger than the vague darkness currently wrapped around his skeleton. He seems to have no interest in the ghoul now.

You walk past the other ghoul, staying close to wall to keep away from it. It makes no movement as you leave the room back into the hallway. The door from your small set of rooms is now open. Beyond it is the rest of the building you occupy.

You walk out as carefully as you can, which is a slow shuffle, and find yourself in a larger hallway. You look down the red-carpeted length of it and see several doors going off either side of it. Further along, a grand staircase curves down and out of sight. All of it seems familiar to you. You've definitely wandered around this building before. Many times.

>Try some of the doors on this level.

>Go down the stairs.

>Call out as best you can and see if anyone answers.

Perhaps checking the rooms will allow us to piece together more of our scattered mind.

You walk down the hallway slowly. The carpet beneath your feet is so ancient it feels more like soft wood. At least it doesn't creak. The air is still, unnaturally so, though you suppose it must have been like that in your room's as well. You pause for a moment. Your rooms. So they were. Those few rooms are where you always lived. Well, not always. This hallway is familiar. You push open the first door you come to. It's a bedroom. Or at least it was. You've been here before, you're sure, though you remember looking at it from much lower down. As a child then.

You try another door further down. Another bedroom. The one after that seems to be some sort of study. A big desk is sagging, and papers are scattered about. The hateful light of the sun pours through a huge bay window behind the desk, and you squint at even that sickly illumination. Stepping to one side, you take cover on the side of the room not illuminated.

The other wall has a huge oil painting on it. Two people. One of them is the same as the woman in the locket you're keeping in your pocket. She's probably in her thirties, a beautiful woman with artfully tousled curls of dark hair. Next to her is a man of similar age, powerfully built, dressed in a military uniform, with one hand upon her shoulder. A married couple, you suppose. Did this room belong to one of them then? Their appearances strike deep into your slow beating heart. If you were a child here then were they your parents?

You back out of the study and continue down the hallway. You reach the top of the stairs and stop, looking down. At the bottom is a large hall of a room, and opposite the stairs are a pair of great double doors, undoubtedly the way outside.

>Go down the stairs.

>Go past the stairs along the upper hallway.

>Call out.

You call out as you pass the stairs to the other side of the building. You can't form words, still, but you make as loud a sound as you can, which comes out more like a strangled wail. If anyone is there they should hear it though. Hopefully they won't be as unfriendly as the ghoul you met earlier. Though if they are, you still have Akko with you. The dog pads along at your heel still, jaw hanging open from his skull. You assume his tongue would be lolling out if he had one.

You go through the rooms of the upper floor one after another. Everything is familiar, but nothing can truly be called a memory. The last room along is a particularly grand bedroom. There is a dressing area at the back, with several mirrors and what looks like a much larger set of make-up than was in your own room. Was this a woman's room then? Did it belong to the face in the pendant, and on the painting?

As you stand ponding this, you hear the sound of footsteps behind you, out on the hall. Perhaps coming up the stairs? Slow and shuffling, just like your own, or those of the ghoul that attacked you.

>Try to hide from them.

>Confront them.

>Try to watch them from hiding.
