You slink into the rubble under the bridge, shivering as the unmistakeable treads of a tank pass overhead, kicking grime into your face from the bridge bottom.

You wait for them to pass, and then hoist yourself up, sliding down to the bottom of the dry riverbed. You walk out from under the bridge, keeping your rifle at the ready. Overhead, German bombers fly. You can hear distant gunfire and yelling, but you can't pinpoint the source. Your squad was wiped out, and you are now trapped behind enemy lines with no obvious choice.

You sigh, deciding to be brave, picking up your rifle and climbing out of the trench. You climb out, holding your rifle steady as you head into town.
The town is surprisingly empty, and you advance through with little trouble. It seems the Germans have been advancing quickly. You jog down an empty street.
Out of the corner of your eye, you see figures. You look up to the windows of one of the buildings beside you. There, a group of civilians near the window, watching you. You stop and stare back at them. For some reason, they aren't phased. Why haven't they left? Why are they standing there, watching while their town is obliterated?
You hear footsteps behind you, and turn to see a group of soldiers coming towards you. You move to raise your rifle, but you quickly see the insignias on their uniforms. English, thank the lord. They are coming at you at a dead sprint.

You break your stance and run with the soldiers as they come to you, leaving the civilians behind. You turn to the nearest soldier, a mustachioed man.

His head explodes into gore and bone, covering you and filling your open mouth. You trip, smashing into the ground, and vomit.

maybe after finding cover, offer to draw him to fire while the rest try to shoot him, though the whole time, we should be moving closer to the sniper's position to rush his cover and maybe get a little gear in the process.

If we have any sort of Willy Pete (was that around for WW1?) or long distance weaponry we might just be able to fire back.
