In the year 1220, the Continent enjoys a period of peace after many civil wars in the Northern Realms, and the Empire of Nilfgaard celebrates the birth of young Prince Emhyr var Emreis. It is in times like this, when the threat of war and men killing men has been forgotten, that people again focus on the dark creatures gifted to us by the Conjunction of the Spheres nearly 1500 years ago. Your home has always faced the occasional graveyard ghoul or traveling halfling, but recently a much more fearsome monster has settled in the area.
What is haunting this moonless autumn night?
>1. In the Temerian province of Velen, howls plague the orchards outside Mulbrydale. The fall harvest has been halted by the largest pack of wolves seen in years. At first only lone travelers and wandering children disappeared, but quickly the King's own men litter the paths outside town.

With the first frosts announces the imminent return of the longships, and the remaining villagers eagerly await tales of battle and glory. Of the three longships that left months earlier, only Jarl Rayman's vessel did not return to the pier it set off from. Each vessel left with 9 men, a captain and his crew, but a watching druid could see less then a dozen remained. The bundle in the druid's arms shifted closer to him, escaping the cold salt breeze chilling the night.
The men on the ships clamored to disembark the ships they had called home for countless nights, and from each ship two large driftwood chests were thrown heavily on the dock. The druid searched each man's face and began to prepare funerals for the missing men, when his eye lingered on a tall man in a brown cloak he did not find familiar. The druid strode down the pier, and the crews of the ships were racing past him to count their blessings. The hooded man stepped off the boat he stood on, swiftly opened each of the driftwood chests and began to search through the various weapons and trinkets collected. As the druid stopped before him, however, the man stopped his rummaging and regarded the bundle in the old man's arms.
