Time is a scarce and precious resource in the dark below; not so in the relative breadth of the Hamlet. Your gun is taken apart and its individual pieces seated in a neat arrangement on the slightly angled flat of a stump. This is a process you have repeated many times in the last few days. As you busy yourself with mind-numbing maintenance, you vaguely register a commotion starting near the open end of this dreary place, where the road meets untilled ground.

It could be a new arrival just as easily as it might be a stray creature, wandering up from where it belongs.

Five minutes pass, slowly ticking away in your head, and the noise refuses to die down.

Your eyes drift towards the end of the road. What you see inspires an immediate pang of dread deep within the pit of your stomach. Examining its gait proves difficult; each of its slimy, unearthly appendages seems to readily swap between propelling it along the ground and thrashing at its surroundings.

Several of your number--those closest to the road and unprepared, no doubt--have already fallen. Blood soaks into the dirt where their parts lay, torn asunder by gnashing teeth and writhing tentacle.

Your gun yet remains in pieces. It would be a trifling matter to reassemble, but each moment is precious. The creature's attention--what of it you can discern, at least--is focused on a resilient and stalwart comrade. Even its ungodly strength finds issue in seizing this wall of a man, though his survival is still hard-fought.

Quickly, you unsheathe your dagger in a flash of polished steel, swinging in a wide arc to hit the creature's myriad eyes.
