This is a Civ Thread with two teams - the Blue team and the Orange team. Teams will be competing against each other for global supremacy. Instead of voting on races, however, each team will build their race from the ground up.

Rules:
First thing's first, you need to choose a team you'll be playing with. For convenience sake, put something involving Blue/Orange in your name, or something to do with the official name of whatever race we end up building. You can join whichever team you want, but it'd be cool if you tried to make them somewhat even. Only vote for options presented to whichever team you chose. No switching teams unless you ask really really nicely.
Voting rules will be adjusted as needed. For the first vote, it will be the first option to get three votes in support. With that, let's get started!

First question: where does your race live?

You choose to unite under a strong militaristic force, ready should negotiations ever go sour.

All beings in this world are in-tune with the ways of magic. However, when some races have a naturally low affinity as spellcasters, they choose to find strength in themselves, developing technology to help their civilization thrive. What is your races affinity with magic and technology? The first four votes will be averaged.

[/blue]While your civilization primarily focuses on their magical skills, you freely utilize technology in order to improve your day-to-day lives. Technology will take longer to develop, but you will be more capable mages and have a mastery of more elements. You have three points to spend on spells. You may invest in three points in a single element and master it, diversify research into three separate elements, or spend two points on one school of magic and one point on another. The blue team will vote on two school of magic per player. Once an element reaches two votes, the point will be spent. If, for example, one player votes on fire magic twice, a point will be spent on fire magic. If a player votes for fire magic and water magic, once a second player has voted for either of those elements, the point will be spent. [/blue]

>>56553
>>56565
>>56570
>>56586
You have chosen a race of technomancers - dismissing magic in exchange for the raw power of science, you develop new technology at an incredible rate. However, because of your limited magical ability, you will receive little help from the gods if you are to attempt spells. That being said, each red player will vote on a single element for their race to have a cursory knowledge of. First element to reach three votes will be selected.

The school of magic in this world are:
>fire
>water
>earth
>wind
>light
>dark

>>
>>56653
Well, the way I see it lads we're in the sky, so wind has to be a given. That being said, I wanna diversify a little. Why not light, since I imagine we see a lot of sun?

>>
>>56668
is that both points into light?

By my count blue has 2 points in wind and 1 point in light, from a WW, WL, and WL vote count. Not sure if it has to be named or not, if that's the case then its Wind, Wind from BTR and Wind, Light from me and we need another
>>
>>56672
Wind, too
>>
>>56687
>>56665
And dark both make sense but i think if we start with earth we can reap the benefits from the start instead of chance happenings.

>>
>>56653
Earth of course
>>

>>56698
The reason i believe that fire would be a great option for us is because we have highly advanced technology and we could make use of steam and combustion engines to use in our daily tasks.

We could have a nigger-free underground railroad.

We could have more advanced forges and factories that put out a shit ton more products because they are driven by machines powered by engines

Our fire affinity would open us to the industrial age if we would just give it a chance.
>>
>>56723
Who would chose dwarfs? Seriously they are great mates and awesome drinkers but id rather be something lese.
>>
>>56739
Fire is not the only energy option as we can adapt nuclear and other technology
>>
>>56739
We could easily make steam engines if we cna shape metals with earth magic. O think finding reasorces is harder than manipulating em as technomancers. Its basicly early reasorce finding for our underground civ. We then use the resources we find so easily to make much stronger tech leaps than blues and steamroll em.
>>
>>56723
no, we are not going to be dwarves, its just highly practical that we make use of the fact that we are literally surrounded by raw material by making ourselves technologically advanced.

I imagined us more as a precursor race that hasn't disappeared mysteriously.
>>
>>56753
Perhaps a rock-based race?
>>
Earth.
>>56741

>>
>>56755
I like the idea but our affinity for technology leads me to believe we'd need to be more dexterous than that.

>Idea

A race of pseudo-elves fascinated by technology who decided to hide themselves underground and work on their advancements in secret. They are practical and polite, willing to share SOME of their scientific bounty with outsiders but knowing when to show the more unruly guests the door. They are obsessed with self-augmentation and constantly work to discover ways to improve their fleshy bodies and to transcend their mortal coil thru building golems to house their souls so that they may live forever.

What do you guys think?

Shall we go in this direction.

>Some sort of eldritch nightmare
EYE WHEELS WITH SIX WINGS AND CRAZY SHIT LIKE THAT
>>
The blue team have chosen Level Two Wind and Level One Light. You have access to healing magics and illumination spells, some such applications being the ability to grow plants without the need for direct sunlight. Your wind manipulation abilities have domestic uses in powering windmills and more efficient sailboats, but because of your advanced research, you also discover combat applications, such as interfering with enemy archers. You may also think of more applications later, without need for further research.

The Orange team have chosen Earth magic as their totem element. As such, you have a basic knowledge in manipulating rocks and minerals, but how to use them to their maximum efficiency will require some trial and error. Combat application seemed far-fetched unless you further develop either your magical abilities or your knowledge of Earthen magic, but if you truly feel as though your spells could help you in a way not explicitly stated here, you are free to try.

Now, as you may have guessed, the moment has come. It's time to choose your appearance. Your race's appearance will not come with inherent positives or negatives at this time, so have some fun with this. Instead of explicit voting options, I'm going to let you guys go at it until three people support a suggestion made by a fellow team-member. If you see a suggestion you like and wish to make a final vote, reply to your desired post with "Voting This." Here are some suggestions I'll give you:

Humanoid for sure. Dark skinned as in dark elves. A sort of demons maybe? Im honestly clinging to dark elves looking motherfuckers. Eternaly living in the ground for we have been banished for our heresy against the so called "gods". We believe in inly one thing, the power of science. (And cthulu our dark lord bringer of insanity priest of the old ones)
>>
>>56838
>Construct

>elemental
This one seems too far-fetched for us, especially considering our lack of interest in magic.

For some reason I have this idea that we would look cool with horns and red skin, kinda like a cartoon devil but more subtle.

Plus with us being hospitable and scientifically advanced infernal humanoids obsessed with physical augmentation goes well with the blue teams decision to be militaristic, magical angels who probably hate us because we look like demons even though we aren't

Robot monks that are in search of the primordial element of life maybe. we search it so we can understand life and become trascendend beings after being mocked as only mere creations instead of independent beings.

something around those lines
>>
Then lets not change the way we look and look more like humanoid robots.

I domt like the idea of being demons and shit because we need allies, who wants to ally with the devil. Also it is magi-fagical and we are techdudes.
>>
>>57055
Who created us then? Is there one living being that created us whom we all worship? If you've ever seen adventure time, think of the character Moe and the robot society he created.
>>
>>57060
We dont worship the being we worship science and science alone. We worship advancement. With the final goal being trascendence(maybe godhood). no need to put a face on our belief.
>>
>>57060
How about some anciet ruined race who died long ago. We worship their 'scriptrue' as holy because we were created by them. But what it really is is tech stuff

Being the robot badasses that we are we could have this as a different kind of militaristic unit. The monks there are maybe like society leaders and such. the ones with horns could be the soldiers. horns being something for intimidation. yeah robot society rulled by technocratic monks that worship science.

>>
>>57079
Is but expected. Science is our god and or god makes us feel good.
>>
>>57080
Horns could be for sensory badassery. Allowing the warriors to sense magic and other forms of energy. As we cannot naturally do anything due to lack of biological ties
>>
>>57084
>>57071
Can we agree to use the robot monk picture as representation? for me it fits perfectly. so op doesnt do the rough sketches :D .

Blue-yhere, I like it.
>>
>>57088
>be robot
>be made of metal
>metal skin has electrodes everywhere to permit the detection of even the most minute magic differences
I dont think we dont have sensory aparatus. They could use that for magic jamming though. but yes good idea.
>>57084
we could use a biological method to obtain programing for new chasis with modification in it to fit thier role(more well balanced motory controls for warriors, more durability for workers.) Or have predetermined program excerpts that are randomly combined to obtain indivudual units with slots for task based programs.
Basicly DNA personality reporduction (random splicing of 2 determined existences) on prebuild chacies with slots for task programs.
>>
>>57085
Should catch up on what we are talking about. We are robots now, the demon guys will be our military. And most of the common will be monk-esk robots. And the sketch looks great desu and still fits if the horn be removed and mostly grey-black robes with hints of orange!
>>
One more idea that I think will tie together a lot of our current ideas.

Basically, whoever first invented us created a base robot and the means to produce this base robot. After his/her death, we delved into modifying parts of our bodies to help us fit specific tasks.
Now in our modern culture, we are born as the default robots and as we get older we decide which parts we want to change and such depending on our own preferences and what types of jobs we want to do.

Thoughts?

We could have a ritual that is basicly update when we discover something new like harder metal skins and stuff. For normal robots its like meh but we as religiously in love with science everytime we create a new advancement for our race we make a ritual at our technochruches and praise the new technology like a minor god and something.

I set up a Twitter so if you want to follow me there I'll give some heads up a few hours before I plan on starting things back up again, it'll be earlier than we started today

That being said, I started it at 23:00 my time, so I'm gonna try to work a little earlier but still end the thread at around the same time as now so we'll have way more time to work with
>>
>>57085
do we have wings Im assuming or do we use magic to float and fly?
>>
>>57138
Nah we could make the current frame new default from time to time to speed things up.

Buuuut you gave me an idea. What if the initiation ritual represents updating to the current frame. They start lacking with certain feutures (we could make some obsolete so they dotn start basic basic) and they need understand what they are turning into. for example new war bots will be made to fight advanced models with inefective weapons to understand what they lack and when they reach the understanding they are ritually brought to the new standard.
We also make after a certain time new defautl frames so that we dont take an obsecene amount of time to make new guys.

Though I suppose if we were raised knowing that would be our eventual fate we wouldn't mind. Kind of like our legacy is helping the next generation with the expectation that they'll do the same.
>>
>>57166
Nah itd be more like 20:00 my time. its 2:30 now so 17 hours from now.
>>
>>57168
No models get perpetually updated. Thats the ritual for already innitiated members of society the first one i have told.
The second ritual involves bringing new members into our society by taking them from the basic frame to the end model for thier task. (soldiers learn why the new models are better in combat, workers learn why certain tools are better). Turning scientific achievment into something worth praising.

Now that your race has been finalized, each team will choose their racial traits. There are three positive perks to choose from and two negatives. You can select one positive perk for free, but selecting a second positive perk will require you to also select a negative perk. Selecting all three positive perks will require you to take both negative perks as well. When voting, choose the number of positive/negative traits, and vote which ones you wish to take. The number of votes for how many perks to take will be averaged, and from all the votes, the perks with the most votes will be chosen.

The Angels bask in the radiance of the sun, their guidance and grace. Chosen by the divine forces, they begin their path to create a world of justice and peace, where all is under their holy domain.

Positive Traits:
Glorious Incandescence: Heralds of the sun, the Angels bask in its glorious radiance. Magical proficiency of all citizens is increased when in presence of the sun.

Ways of the Wind: As the Angels live their lives in the sky, they relish the freedoms this grants. They travel faster than most and will gain a bonus to transportation-based discoveries.

The Chosen Force: In order to ensure the world follows the path of righteousness and justice, the Angels pursue their mission with relentless endeavors. Increases population growth speed.

Negative Traits:
The Masquerade: Beneath the veneer of your heavenly appearance lies your true form. Enemies who have faced them in combat will no longer negotiate or surrender.

Wings of Icarus: More beautiful than functional, the wings of the Angels were not meant for long-term flight. Overuse can permanently cripple a unit’s flight capabilities.

The Technocracy, a lost civilization, finds itself at ends with a world that has left them behind. Finding strength in technology, they vie to expand their influence for the sake of the one true god - progress.

Positive Traits:
Combat Programming: Experienced combat veterans are able to embed their experience into the programming of other tribesman. For every unit promotion, some experience is granted to all combat units.

Tunneling: As dwellers of the underground, the Technocracy are proficient miners. Allows for the creation of underground roads to be built within Technocracy territory, unable to be utilized by enemies and very difficult to destroy.

Clockwork: Relics of an unknown era, the race of mysterious automatons never sleep. Increases building speed for town and territory improvements.

Negative Traits:
Utilitarian: Seeing no need for material sustenance, the Technocracy feels little need to invest time in gathering trinkets. Gain less happiness from luxuries and no happiness from food-based luxuries.

Factorial Reproduction: Because the reproduction factory is in the capital, Technocrats are wary about spreading themselves too far from home. Limits population grown required to found new cities.

Okay, sorry for fucking that up. In terms of choices, you don't really have any information of anything outside of your island, so anything from food, minerals, and animals you'd need to independently research. Like I said, we're not playing Civ, so just keep on doing the roleplay thing like you've been so good at in the past. If you want to research something but can't, I'll tell you what you need in-character. Domestic projects are pretty much the same thing - build houses to try and build a population, train soldiers, start harvesting local materials, things like that. As long as it's reasonable I'll write it into the game.

Your home has descended just over the edge of a vast body of water. There are a large number of forests nearby, several mineral deposits, but little edible food aside from what you've been growing on the island already. There are also unknown animals to the southwest. Your explorers are positioned north, and can begin exploring north, south, or west.

Head West so we can investiagte those animals that I see in the image. Hopefully we can maybe bring them back and either use them as land mounts or breed and domesticate them for food.
>Research-
Begin reserching basic magic techniques to improve our current farms. Our magic is advanced enough that I doubt it would be too much of an issue, and if we can increase our farms efficency, we won't need to as much land in our floating city (space is rather limited in the sky). Also, since we breed like rabits it will help sustain us.
>Work Project-
All available hands should immediatly begin constructing houseing for all. Once the population is housed, we can focus on other projects. Also, we should attempt to make housing as modular as possible, i.e. easy to expand, since we have a growing population.

First thing is first. I suggest we explore sense mineral magic (should be low tier level if op lets us also earth magic)

We start setting up our factories as domestic project

Explore small area around entrace into the mountain. Or we could try to dig underground for resources but its to early we dont really have the tevh. Or we could go a stereotipical direction on what op offers us.

Im from Romania well i have some bad news. i gtg its 5 am here. I am sure that our most competent commanders will be capable of making our nation prosper.

Also Alacrity can we start tommorow a bit earlier like 1 hour earlier than today? so i can have a bit more fun here? Thx a lot.

can i get a count of what we already have? in the science tree, and what we have as infrastructure. i'm expecting we have a temple (for more pop) a Factory for metals and other items.

I believe we should, for our first round take a count of our current status in all accounts.

with our current understandings making a decision would not be beneficial if we do something we already have/ not doing something we need.

Also matters how closely OP is using the civ 5 map, cause that's not iron ore. Looks like stone or marble. I just wanted robots riding elephants.

Understanding the life-giving power of the sun, you have your mages attempt to replicate even a fraction of its power. Through experimenting, you are able to create a luminous glow that warms the hearts of those who witness it. Plants grow in the light's direction when exposed for long periods of time, but don't seem to grow any faster. As such, this doesn't appear to be any more effective than conventional growing methods. However, you now have the means to grow plants indoors. Given your current circumstances, you do not have a large amount of unused space, either indoor or outdoor. However, there will surely be long-term benefits to this discovery once you manage to develop your settlements more.

Your domestic efforts are divided with the central purpose of expanding your population. Houses are built and farms are expanded, and thanks to your racial trait, new citizens are more easy to come by. As your population grows, you will need to decide on a job for them. Which aspect of your civilization would you like to invest in improving?

>more scientists

Sending your explorers toward the animals, you discover a large amount of local wildlife nearby. Aside from the herds of smaller animals you saw before, there are also larger animals that appear as though they would also make reasonable livestock. Not far from both of those herds, however, is another body of water, teeming with aquatic life. While you are happy to be surrounded by such a plethora of life, this also means you are now surrounded by water on two sides. You can travel north or south along the coastlines.

More scientists/mages
>>
>>62654
Shame that the glow doesn't hold much use for crops. For now, it should just serve as interior lighting.

As for what we should prioritize, I say more scientists. Workers are abundant and it should already be easy to explore because of our natural flight.

>>62766
I say we travel North along the coastline and see what we find. As for the animals, we should set up a small permanent workforce near where the animals are located. They should begin to domesticate the animals and breeding them for food.

Priority has been given entirely to the discovery of these new metals. While nothing revolutionary, they're more sturdy and reliable than anything you've worked with in the past. Finding something that would really cause you to re-assess the way you work with metals would have to be actively sought instead of stumbled upon. Nevertheless, these are solid samples within your ability to work with. You could craft crude weapons or armor from these, or use them to improve your current tools and facilities.

As your workers head south toward the quadrupedal surface animals, you spy another mountain range across the valley. The walls of the mountain shimmer softly - they contain more ores, similar to the ones you just discovered. However, bringing a significant amount of ores back to your home would either require a significant amount of time, or some sort of hauling device.

Your explorers are just to the southwest of your home. You can continue west toward the newly discovered mountains, southeast toward the quadrupeds, south, or north.

Alright, from here on out I'm going to condense all decision making into a single post for the sake of convenience. I'll do all the flavor-text stuff first, if need be. This will also be the final choice of the night since things seem to be dying down, make your choices and I'll come back tomorrow with the results.

With a growing population, you have decided to use the opportunity to expand your R&D department. And a perfect timing too, as you have given them their first real challenge - animal husbandry. Being surrounded by such a large variety of animal life, you easily have the means to sustain your growing population. However, this will be a time-consuming task - figuring out the behavioral patterns of all the animals in the region will take time, and adjusting what your own farms are growing to accommodate animal feeding will be a task in and of itself. A team of researchers is placed in the field, southwest of the safety of your home. After assisting with the construction of temporary homes, your explorers bid farewell to their clansmen as they begin their trek north along the coastline.

Your science team and domestic teams are both preoccupied with the domestication project, meaning your explorers can cover a significant amount of ground. What sort of resources would you like to have them focus on?

>more food
>animals, large and small

Tunnels.png
12KB, 400x400px
As your explorers move toward the mountain range, the horizon glimmers. More mountain. More ore. Seeing this as an opportunity, a mining team is quickly assembled. Using your initial ore discovery, you improve your picks and furnaces to gather and process your new reserves as quickly as possible. Feeling at home in the soft darkness of your underground home, the mining team begins the process of tunneling towards their prize.

However, you are inexperienced tunnelers. As the team travels forward, the moisture and heat become too much - you must create shafts toward the surface much more frequently than you would have liked. Should anyone stumble across these, they could easily enter and compromise your position. Additionally, this doesn't solve your transportation problem - the cramped tunnels are no more conducive to tunneling than the valleys.

Your domestic workforce is tunneling toward the ores to collect them. After upgrading your mining tools and facilities, your science team is now awaiting instruction. Additionally, your exploration unit is now in the middle of a valley, surrounded by hills and mountains. Sending them east will return them toward the coastline home and quadrupeds, and north will return them to the unexplored grasslands. West will have them traverse farther into the mountains, and south will have them pass an oasis at the mouth of a desert.
>>
Before we end tonight's session, however, we have one more thing we need to discuss. For decisions that both teams will need to make, I'll use greentext

Both tribes have come into contact with local flora and fauna. However, there are a myriad of animals located in this vast world. I'd like each tribe to choose six types of animals they would like to represent their race.

>two small animals
>two medium animals
>two mountable animals

For the two medium animals I feel we should choose something that has to do with food, like an animal that lays eggs or is really meaty.

I just feel that the animals having a cultural significance and history would be really cool.

As in, physically turning them into one of our race through the powers of justice and in the name of unity!

>you 2

We can reaserch jetpacks later.
We also have advantage on our home turn as well. My line of thought is to get our shit togheter and our economy strong and after that we research the shit to help us fight in the sky. Cause if they attack us they will have a hard time to use thier wings other than above ground.
We are not on a civ map we are outside a mountain and our main city is under ground we have tunnels and we get minerals why not have a mount to help do this faster. The more we can cash in underground the better for us and the harder to get fucked we will get.
+ a well settled underground system has more potentail than a flat plane(ground) and open space with nothing but sun as a resorce.

Tldr: fast resource income+strong early industry= fast tech and fast counters to air problem. and a good safety underground.

That would be really cool, and probably the best option for tunneling if it can go through solid rock. The only problem I see is that it would digest all of the ores it goes through, making it less useful for mining unless it shits solid nuggets.
On that not, another really good idea would be those mining beetles from Enders game that turn ores they eat into their carapace, which they then molt, leaving beetle shells of high quality metal.

My blue bros, what about Wasps/Bees/Hornets for our medium or large animal. A portion of the underside of our floating island could be their nest that has been bored out. Then we get all that sweet, free honey. Also, they work with the militaristic theme we have going.
>>
>>63700
I also want to throw in I like the manta idea because its coloring looks like light. Put it in large.

Dire Eagles and Rocs seem overplayed. I can appreciate choosing Rocs when the other sentients are subterranean. Nice irony there.

I really like the bee idea. I would like it to be our small animal though.
A swarm of several thousand 1-2 foot long bees would still be terrifying, and would keep the advantage of being hard to hit, which they would lose if they were larger.
>>
>>69561
I can go for small, but I really like the image of a huge nest carved into a floating cliffside. Add to it their ferociousness for war and I feel like they make more sense at mount size.
On the other hand, each family having its individual nest is nifty too.

I like the idea of the entire underside of the island being a giant nest. I just think that having several million 1-2 foot long bees would be better than having a few thousand or less 10+ foot bees.
Also, an interesting side effect of the bees is that they could potentially heat the entire island. Honey bees will actually fight asian giant hornets by swarming them and vibrating, heating up until they cook the hornet underneath them.

Supporting foot long honey bees with hives all over the bottom of the hives.

protoceratops-size.jpg

My current preferences for animals are
>small
Giant bees for honey, defense, and potentially heating the entire island. I also think it would be cool if the bees wax could harden to a rock like substance, like coral maybe, that is lighter than air. This would explain why our island is floating, and we could use the bees to help with architecture, using abandoned hives on the surface of the island for the basis of buildings. This would also mean the island could slowly grow, depending on how good we are with taming and controlling the bees.
Protoceratops for eggs and meat. And because Dinosaurs are cool.

>Medium
No idea yet. I still think the idea of mini giraffes with wings on their head is really cute, but admittedly completely useless.

>Large
Giant floating/flying manta rays for transportation and defense. Maybe shoot spines out of their tails like the Storm King from Demon's Souls. Maybe we could hitch our island to a swarm of them or one REALLY giant one (the queen/matriarch) to transport our island.
Quetzalcoatlus for transportation/offense. I just think Dinos are really fucking cool.
>>
>>69889
I like ravens though :D But yeah thought of bats 2 as a more suitable pic.

I would really like the rats to be mechanical a small remanent of the last civilisation that created us (as a lore base for mecha rats)

A guy suggested large beatels vs worms that turn metals they ingest into carapace alloys thus making them a mobile mining and refining unit.

Darahooka name first things that came now in my mind

Dont really like the elephant idea. we could have giant spiders and some reptilian based animal 2? i dont really find that especially larga variant animals are that much of a use to us we are robots after all.
>>
>>69927
Why not combine the idea of protoceratops and quetzalcoatlus and have the giraffes be for eggs and meat. That way the things are even more adorable.
I would say one of our medium creatures should be a bird. Having a civilization that high in the sky for so long means that we would have naturally become accustomed to seeing them. Geese are very structured and have even been used as guards.
>>
>>69963
And some more suggestions for orange team: I think you guys should look at some more animals that would be more suitable or useful underground, maybe things that help with excavation, like Amebelodon, the shovel toothed mini elephant, for shovel stuff, or Anklyosaur for mining.

>>69976
Explain your protoceratops/quetzalcoatlus combo idea some more? I'm intrigued.
Also, I was thinking the protoceratops would be a good idea because we want a smaller animal for food purposes. Being egg layers, if they're being taken care of and protected from predators, they can breed pretty fast, and you want a lot of smaller animals rather than a few larger ones. That way if one gets sick/ falls off the fucking island, it's much less of a loss, and they mature faster than a larger animal.
>>
>>70048
My idea is just take everything you like about proceratops, but put it in a girafde package. Still small, good for meat and eggs, and is totes adorable.
Pteradactyle is also cool for medium animal.
>>
>>70089
I'm sticking to my comp now. Hopefully I'll remember to keep my name. . .
>>
>>69963
No elephant? alright i was thinking of a mobile fortress being strapped to their back LOTR style. Also that beetle could replace the elephant then. We also need to name it.

Darahooka, sounds interesting but a little too Harsh for our asian-like style for language. Dareahiem [DAH-rhey He-im] To match our language but it could be called differently if someone else shows us it. Also if we find drow in the underdark then they would probably call it the dareahiem because they too have similar speech patterns. Also if we have the dareahiem then we don't really need the bat/ravens.

The worm then could be replaced with a giant spider which i was thinking that first the then i thought of the worm thing because what underground civ doesn't have giant worms doing stuff?

I really like the rat idea for we can just use rat swarms for stuff.

The worm is a must. I thinking of spiders instead of elephants. elephants dont really fit us for underground civ. The worms could be the large one instead of the big thing you showed as they can dig and carry (arakis worms from dune were huge and strong indeed).

I started thinking about alpacas for medium creatures since their the sheep of high altitudes and it led me to thinking about South America.
We could go for quetzalcoatl, not the giraffe, but a feathered, flying snake. Not sure, the kind of scratch the same itch that hornets and mantas already cover, but they look cool.
I was also looking at Jaguars, just because of how righteous they are.

I was thinking it would be cool if that was the "Queen", like with bees, and the actual mantas would be like the drones, so there would only ever be one of that size and look.
I also really like the Quetzalcoatl idea, and think it would be cool if it had a religious or holy sort of aspect to it.
>>
>>70646
Completely agree with the mantas.
Of course, what's a Quetzalcoatl without holiness attached. Throw in an ouroboros angle and we're set. Should they be in the Mount/Large category to increase reverence?
>>
>>70683
I think I'm sold on the quetzalcoatl, but i can't decide if I would prefer them in the small category, as purely a holy symbol of our culture, or in the mountable category, for badass war god status?

The beetle I was referencing when I brought it up is from the story "the gold bug" by orson scott card. It's a pretty cool read, I would recommend it.

>>70705
One of the reasons I would like them in the small category, is because if they were, we could have hundreds of them always just flying around, as a constant piece of scenery making our city feel more holy and wild. If it was huge and powerful, there would obviously be significantly less of them.
>>
Hey guys, just got off work. We've made some interesting discussions since I was last here lol. I like the ideas, so I'm gonna change my current votes to

>Small
Fox
Big Bees

>Medium
Alpaca
Sharks

>Large
Giant Manta Rays
Quetzalcoatls

My reasoning is that we should embrace the sea since we already are with our mantas, let's take it a step further and include another aquatic animal. I like the underside of the floating city being a giant hive for the bees, and when it comes to the quetzalcoatl i just think that as a holy symbol they would look better, bigger. Could be sacred animals, so we don't ride them to war or anything but they fly about our city, coil up on top of buildings and what not. Honestly, I'm just gonna play some overwatch, those are my votes but I'll trust whoever is on blue team that's checking the thread to come up with our animals, even if they aren't the ones I like. I trust my fellow blues
>>
>>70873
The problem is that the third category is _Mountable_ and not just large, so we are riding them.
I imagine people do want to diversify these as much as possible for resources sake, but could we use two different breeds for quetzalcoatls? Have the large, riding breed and the smaller carrirer-pigeon breed. Even I'm not completely for it, but it is an idea we could consider.

>>70932
And i was thinking of this as well, a quetzalcoatl minor and quetzalcoatl major. I think that would be really cool.
>>
You guys keep going on about bees and tiny quetzalcoatls and shit, but I can not possibly support any suggestion that involves not having doves as one of the animals. It's like, why are we even angels at that point? We just mashed a bunch of thematically inappropriate animals together while ignoring the one actual animal that alone was enough to be a perfect representative. I don't care what any of the other five animals are, but doves has to be one of ours.
>>
>>70965
I'm not against doves, but part of the earlier discussion was about having Old Testament features as well as the modern day idea of how angels look. Plus, one of our abilities even hints that our race is two-faced. So what if we brainstorm a dove that is similar, or even have this two-faced nature reflected in each animal pair. For example, small could be dove and giant bees. One is beautiful and serene, the other grotesque and mean.
>>
>>71012
I'd be all for that.
>>
>>71012
This is good. I feel like >>70873 covers the small and medium well, large would probably benefit from replacing quetzals with the flying snakes.
>>
>>71012
I really like this. I was the thinking earlier that we should have something that reflects our darker side, and I was thinking spiders or someshit, just something evil and mean looking.
But I really really like the concept of something that changes from beautiful to evil. I don't think I like the dove turning into a bee, that just sounds wierd; what with turning from a bird to an insect, and how would they do their hive building and honey?
I would prefer the dove turn into a quetzalcoatl. Going from a pure white peaceful bird to vibrant green and red venomous snake with wings. This could carry the old testament theme with the snake from eden. Speaking of which, I think our city should be named eden. It also makes it kind of funny that we'd be worshipping the giant ass snake.
>>
>>71035
<Tentative>
Small:
Dove--regular doves? Used for messengers?
Giant Bees--see >>69927
Medium
Alpacas?
Sharks?
Glaucus atlanticus?
Mountable:
Mantas--hivemind like suggested, but docile and easily tamed?
Quetzalcoatls--fiercely independent and nigh impossible to use? Destructive force of nature we revere but give a wide berth?

>>71083
I meant more that the symbolism would be present by both creatures, not necessarily that they would change between the two. However, that could add more flavor to the doves, but I'm not sure if they need it. Functionally, tiny flying snakes and birds aren't different.
>>
>>71098
Confusingly Quetzalcoatls are the flying snakes while Quetzalcoatlus is the giraffe dinosaur.

>small
Dove that transforms into a flying feathered snake; has symbolism for our culture with the two faced peaceful and wrathful
>>69927
Giant bees; protect and warm our city, produce honey, and could possibly explain how our city formed and allow our city to expand/ "grow" more city's (break off a large chunk of hive from underneath the city, put a new queen in it, and let it grow)

>Medium
Protoceratops; cute beefy little bugger that breeds fast and lays eggs, providing two sources of food

Glaucus Atlanticus? giant beautiful poisonous sea slug, looks really cool
Golden/silver fleeced Aplace? provides beautiful fiber for textiles, is cuddly

>Mountable
Mantas; has a hive structure, slow, can float through the air
Quetzalcoatl; Religious holy symbol, extremely intelligent and independent

On an interesting side note, Mantas have the highest brain to body mass ratio of all elasmobranches, and are extremely intelligent, frequently cooperating with people to help get unstuck from nets.

>>71104
>>71196
Ah, I see now. I still like the idea of a creature that changes appearance and personality from peaceful to wrathful like us though. I was also thinking more honey bee than wasp/hornet for our giant bees, a peaceful, helpful, and industrious creature that would protect it's home if attacked, rather than the evil fucking death machines that are wasps and hornets.

And maybe we could take a little from chinese mythology, and if a small quetz lives for a thousand years it turns into the huge badass quetz?
>>
>>63585
>Small animals:
- Moles with bright cyan crystals fused to their backs. They naturally sense places where minerals reside to build their nests. Challenging to tame, but it would be worth it. Also we could reverse-engineer in the future the method they use to sense minerals (decay radiation? magic resonance? I dunno)
- Dark Canaries found in bushes at the foot of The Pamant. They don't form flocks due to sparse food in this area. They can sense methane which is used by females as an aphrodisiac for their mating period. Exposure to the gas kills males afterwards sex.

>Medium animals:
- Rock Hyenas - found in the elevated areas, they are a little bit more intelligent than IRL dogs. They can smell our tracks and use simple mechanisms, but on the other hand their hides are expensive as fuck for other sentient races. They look like Red XIII from FF7.
- Gemadillos - Armadillo-like creatures that have Ewoks-tier intelligence. They have green scales on their bodies. Despite having a rather wild attitude, they are friendly when not pissed off. They'd do almost anything for shiny shiny rocks. This would render them either as an allies, or a slave species.

>Mounts
- Sand Bisons - Covered with thick, mud-braided fur, they are large mounts with a lot of endurance and load capability. They tend to stink, so they are often a prey for flocks of Rock Hyenas (when wandering alone).
- Given the versatility of Sand Bisons, no more mounted animals are needed.
>>
>>71274
I'd rather not have an animal that actively transforms, especially one that changes to such extremes, I just can't find a way to justify it in nature or with our magic abilities. Also, I believe the honey bee is the consensus, along with mountable flying snakes and mantas.

Alright

Mecha rats, Mechanized rats left by our creators and we can use them to do stuff. They are rats that are robots. Can be used for combat (barely), spying, and whatever else.

all things considering, Grewthets or shilkruts, I think that Gralm(?)[G-Real-m] sounds like good middle ground But i feel like it doesn't fit the best with our other words. how ever e have used the other letters other than the G and the R. Maybe Shralm [sh-RAL-mm] which makes it sound kinda mushroomy. I like to think these guys are like moles but with stronger skin. Just the front two arms have a thumb like attatchment, which almost makes it sentient looking, which its an animal and animals are not sentient. Lets not have thumbs but just large claws like moles do. I'd like to think that the Shralm/Gralm are deeper underground that's why they have harder and tougher plates of hard crystal. >>71291 Mixed with the crystal moles nad the gemadillos.
>Help with mining smaller holes and can be used as a fighting creature.

Giant fucking spiders. You seen harry potter or LOTR? you know that scene with the spider? yep that's basically it. Born from the underdark and live in large expanding webs.
>Can be used for silk, webbing, combat, and they are fucking giant spiders

The Darahiem have more of a lighter leathery skin which paired with their bat-like wings allows them to fly. They are not blood-sucking, they are more like bats than vampire bats so fruits and red meats. I dont know if they are sentient because they look pretty badass desu. They are the same height of a human and their four arm-like limbs allow for easy hunt of bigger prey and more climbing ability as well as burrowing. They are from the underdark, or the equivalent of the underdark we have in this world. They are not blind but do not like the light as much so usually nocturnal.
>These guys can help with mining, transportation of goods because it is winged and it can also help with mining or scouting.

The beetles could be called the Kheprea which is an Egyptian Kheprea scarab. Also Khepri is the name of a smite character. These creatures basically shed giant sheets of metal or can be harvested for their metal bodies as the creature digests and consumes metal they refine it and put it into their carapace. From under ground colonies they have a maze of tunnels.
>They are mountable. can be used as beasts of burden, mounts, mining, refinery, and they look pretty badass too.

Arrakis worms are from fucking dune, who hasn't seen dune? They are basically huge fucking worms that live on a desert planet and they produce the spice the plot of the move revolves around. Not just that but they can burrow massive fucking holes. The spice must flow!
>They can be used for mounts, mining, spice

I honestly don't think it's to extreme of a change, if you consider it a slightly magical/holy animal.

Its just changing color, elongating it's body and getting teeth.

I can see where you're coming from though. I usually prefer stuff like this to be more believable and have some sort of basis in reality.

I just really like the symbolism of it sharing the transforming characteristic with us, and the symbolism of the snake from the garden of eden and us, being angels, worshiping it.

>>71374
Don't think of it as a dinosaur, think of it as a really big, beefy, chicken with 4 legs. It probably even had feathers, somewhat almost making it fit with the bird theme.

But joking aside, I think we should have something that fills that niche of food alongside the bees, and it being a squat meaty animal that lays eggs is perfect for that.

If you can think of something else for that niche, I'd go along, but I really like dinos.
>>
>>71415
Like I said, it's weird, but it does fit into how old our culture is. This is a stock animal that has proven its use over the millenia.
>>
>>71274
ADDENDUM:
Protoceratops is feathery and fluffy as fuck. Also provides feathers for decorative purposes.

>>71430
I'm actually thinking we should think of a different name for it, since dinosaurs and "ceratops" would make most people think of big scaly beasts, which this definitely isn't, and don't usually fit into a fantasy setting. It's cute, fluffly, has feathers and a beak, and is delicious.

I'd include either Spiders or Arrakis Worms as my secondary mount (>>71291) due to ability to traverse through the tunnels in the pre-railways era.

If Spiders: A concept very similar to replicators from the Stargate Lore. They form a hive, can scale on the will, but don't feed on the technology - yet they are still attracted to it. We could discover them in the late game, when the Hi-Tech becomes available. They are not able to be communicated by the oral means, but we could hack their mainframe to order them around (yet again, tech requirement).

If Worms: They should be able to travel through the dimensions (can create temporary wormholes). They would respond to our earthly aura (magic). However to order them and utilize time-space abilities, we would need to artificially amp our residual magic abilities via Ultra-high-tech. Extremely high price, but instant travel in return.
>>
>>71487
ah yeah i like the ideas with the wormholes. and the spiders being attracted to Technology but shouldn't be made of technology.

worms still make spice. Time spice.
>>
>>71487
I don't know, but dimension traveling worms sounds like a bit much...

Why not have them liquefy surrounding rock to allow them to burrow through it?

One problem I have with your guys's worms is that in dune, the worms travel through sand, which is how they burrow.
They weren't capable of going through solid rock, which is how the natives stayed safe from them.
I just don't see how they could burrow through solid stone with just chewing.

But I like how much world building everyone is doing with just choosing the animals.
Makes me wonder if we're doing more than the Alacrity intended.

And please don't give me the "oh well it needs technology lmao" excuse because that's fucking stupid aswell. By the time you have the technology to tame your God-worms you could just learn to fucking teleport, which 1) is probably not even possible in the foreseeable future, and 2) is also fucking broken. On top of all this, and going back to the original point, why the hell would you even consider a dimension traveling worm to exist in the scenario, and more specifically why would you even attempt to claim and genuinely support something so obviously over powered? Please stop with the transforming animals, these aren't super-special named characters, they're literally just animals that made a home near us. Even worse is that they're small animals, they're literally as important as a pidgeon in NYC, i.e.: not at all. They won't be living for 1000 years or any randumb bullshit like that, and there is no need for them to transform, it doesn't represent our "two faced personalities", which isn't even proper application of the trait, it represents edginess and bad ideas. See >>71587 mainly for the spoiler text but also because it's almost as retarded.

>>71590
That plus the fact that 70% of /qst/ is cancer.
>>
>>71600
What are you talking about when you say "gods" we don't have any of those, and anyone who says we do is fucking retarded. We literally have snakes that fly, that's it, they don't teleport, they don't beat up the bullies at school, and they don't know any powerful Justu that let you kill your dad. Also, "big worms" doesn't equal literal inter-planier beings. Thank you for understanding.
>>
>>71602
damn man, calm down with it. I'm not saying it has anything special, the thing literally just turns into a snake and back.
It doesn't have any magical powers, it's not gonna heal or kill anything, there's nothing it can do besides turn into a snake. It's literally as powerful as a pigeon either way.

The only reason I don't want to do just plain doves is that I think it's boring in a setting that has transforming demon angels that live on a flying city.
If you can give me a compelling reason to choose it besides "it has white wings like us" I'll change my vote. I'm completely open to changing my opinion.
>>
>>71611
If you want my explanation for why the birds transform, it's that in the wild they would use magic to partially transform into one of their predators as a defense mechanism to try and scare away anything that was trying to attack them.
They're not aggressive, and only transform when threatened. Their venom is either weak or nonexistent.
Is that still too edgy for you?
>>
>>71633
>transforming demon angels
U fucking wot m8? That is possibly the edgiest peice of text in this thread, and a laughably horrendous interpretation of our racial traits. Also, we aren't even true Angels, we're just humanoids with wings, We aren't super special snowflakes, we're a mortal race that lives in the sky. Doves are there because of how well they fit with our race, yes they share similar characteristics, but more than anything it's because doves are generally regarded as free beings and beautiful, much like our race. Finally, I feel sorry for you if you think that a normal, non-frankenstein's-monster level race is "boring", because you've either never expirenced the joys of nature, or you're thirteen and retarded.

P.S. You tell me not to use a comparison of traits as reason to support normal doves, yet you use a trait comparison to support autism-doves.
>>
>>71676
Yes, because 1) polymorphing is far to advanced to be used by mere animals, and even if it wasn't, magic isn't a consistent trait in a species, 2) predators would realize it wasn't deadly and the point of the transformation would be completely negated, and 3) it makes far more sense for a bird to simply use its existing genetic adaptations(WINGS) and simply fly away.
>>
>>71677
I'm literally quoting the op
Negative Traits:
The Masquerade: Beneath the veneer of your heavenly appearance lies your true form. Enemies who have faced them in combat will no longer negotiate or surrender.

I interpreted that as transforming. I may be wrong, idk. I'll have to wait until he clarify's that to know for sure.

>>71687
1) we don't know if that's true in this setting. 2) There are SO MANY actual animals that use this sort of tactic (changing appearance to intimidate. It's called Deimatic Behaviour). If what you're saying was true, none of them should exist. 3) what if its predator is a bigger bird? Or small teleporting sandworms? You never know. It could be anything.
>>
>>71677
You're right on the comparison point though. You were starting to make me salty. I'm sorry.
>>
>>71706
In response to the racial trait part, it's quite obvious he was referencing culture/personality traits.

Now, in response to "Deimatic Behavior", While I appreciate the fact you care enough to actually find the scientific name for such behavior, again, your interpretation is wrong. Animals that practice Deimatic behavior only appear to be a more dangerous animal, i.e.: a catapiller with spots that make its head look like that of a small snake, or a moth with designs on its wings that make them look like the face of a larger animal, not a bird literally rearranging its genetic composition to turn into a completely different animal.
>>
>>71611
>>71602
>>71587
Totally see where you're coming from and I agree with the points you make. Suspension of disbelief is a bitch, but from the vague instructions one could see that there is a lot of room for interpretation and pretty sure having an imagination you could get carried away. Which yeah, having giant worms that can tunnel though a different dimension is a cool idea but in all practicality it is kind of hard to implement in a story driven experience.

if you go back you can see i originally wanted elephants and tigers as they are equally majestic and wise as they are dangerous which represents orange's race. But from the ideas given i opted for a more useful creatures like lizards and other things like what blue waffle said for a dino but it didnt make much sense because it was above ground so changed it to worms. Created a bat thing from the underdark which i thought would be cool to try to counter some air advantage you guys have over us. Rats turn to mech rats and another dino turns to spider turns to a small turtle digging thing to really just take space. Giant spiders for silk which i thought would be good for trade. And the giant beetle which was also another suggestion by blue waffle.

Actually this post needs some form of anchor to real life to keep an air of suspension to keep the game interesting and not dull.

I just don't see what a pigeon can offer us when we can fly.
Although honestly the sames true with the transforming one;
literally the only reason I'm voting for it is because I think the ideas neat.
It's the one on my list I'm most open to changing.

It doesn't have to offer anything. I'm not trying to munchkin here, OP asked for animals to REPRESENT us.
>>
>>71811
That's true. I got into the mindset that these were animals we had already domesticated, while looking back the OP may have more likely meant either animals that were available for domestication or animals that just represent our peoples in a cultural way.
I still personally prefer the transforming dove, and feel that it represents us just as well, but wouldn't be disappointed if it lost the vote.

It's not a reasonable trait though, even with magic, it doesn't make any actual sense in any situation. It's fine to have neat animals, but only when there is an argument for its existence based off of the information we actually have. So far, we know about the different types of magic, and we know this world is earth like. The fact that the world is earth like has obviously had a major impact on every decision we've made so far. From what we know of magic, it takes dedicated efforts to perform the simplest tasks, and requires true intelligence to use. Earthlike animals don't have the intelligence required to perform advanced magical feats, and there is literally no reason why this species in particular would be granted the ability (because it wouldn't occur naturally) to polymorph. There just isn't a reason for it to exist, and honestly it's edgy, it's just really not a good idea, and doesn't represent us properly or well.

I am of play now

I completely understand where you're coming from.
I also think there is no reason to believe that magic doesn't occur naturally.
And if it can't that makes it a moot point because then the op would deny the creature.
I also disagree with your end points. But those are all a matter of personal opinion, and i can see why you disagree.

autosage is 750 posts on /qst/, also the number would be italicized if it were. The board might just be really populated right now.

Ah.
>>
>>85939
sucks really. He's going to get back and there's not going to be a thread. Someone should archive it if op doesn't himself. Also what does it mean the limit for each id is 3? does that mean 3 active or 3 ever. because of the nature of posts it would be hard to not get to 3 if youre an active user of the board
>>
>>85992
One person can only create 3 threads at a time I believe.
>>
If anyone wants I have an active thread going, well not so active being no one is posting, but if you want you can hop over there. it's a demon civ thread. I cant draw but my writing is decent enough for a story. Since this thread will die soon might as well give you guys something to do.
