The year is 1866, the location is England.

The time of myth has begun to fade, instead only existing in the world of romance and literature. Surely it seems as if the world has already reached a new, brighter age. However, no matter how bright a light may shine, it will always cast a shadow. Creatures beyond human comprehension lurk in these shadows, preying on the unsuspecting innocents. Even the bravest of men would turn turn white if they came face to face with one of these beasts. That's where you come in.

Your name is Edward Battel, and you come from a long line of heroes who have "special talents" that help them fight off the paranormal and the demonic. Legend has it that one of your ancestors slew a powerful vampire that plagued the country a couple hundred years back, and your grandfather supposedly cleared a small village of the undead with his gifts. Despite your family's reputation, however, you believe that is a crock of horse shit.

You have no special talents or magical abilities, and neither did your father. You've never come face to face with a spirit, a witch or any Vampire. You're a completely average man who takes advantage of your family's reputation. You pretend to know what you're talking about and scam people out of their money, in some scenarios you even fake instance of supernatural events. In short you are a con man.

Recently a letter arrived at your door step, it came from a family friend of yours asking for your aid. Reports of a shadowy figure have been spotted in the town, and some of the villagers have gone missing. Seeing this as an attempt to make bank you've sent word out to him that you've accepted his request, for a price of course.

>What time of day do you decide to leave by, Morning, Mid day, or dusk.
>What equipment do you bring for this mission?
>Will you travel alone or bring an accomplice?

>Choices will be decided by majority vote.
>>
Mid Day
Standard fare for the time, i'm sure he has a "Vampire hunting kit" or "Ghost hunting kit" or the like
Bring an accomplice, always nice to have someone watching your back

You schedule a coach to arrive to pick you up around mid day, after all it gives you time to prepare.

For one you have to make sure you've been properly cleaned up, you can't arrive to a new place and look like some commoner. While you might not exactly be rich, persay, you always want to present yourself in a memorable, distinguished manner. You chose your best clothes, including a well trimmed cape, and your best bowler had. All in all you certainly don't have the appearance of a grizzled demon slayer, but one more befitting of a rich noble. Exactly the kind of air you want to give off.

Of course you spent far more time fixing yourself up than you did preparing your tools. After all, you've done this before so you already have what you need. You have typical vampire slaying fare, a wooden stake, several pounds of salt, a lengthy rope, and a decently sized cross bow in case things get hairy. However, you have a few... Strange items packed in as well. A set of matches, some lighter fluid, ten smoke bombs, and several nails inside of a pouch.

Your plan was to,of course, make sure you had some kind of out in case you wanted to high tail it back home early. As in you'd probably dig up some corpse, pretend it was some vampire or zombie, and set the damn thing on fire. As long as you ended up getting paid, you didn't care if you actually solved their problem or not.

As soon as you're finished getting ready, you exit your home to find the coach already waiting for you outside. In the back seat of the coach you can see somebody fidgeting around, likely the companion you've asked to accompany you on this trip. Now...Who did you ask to visit you again?

>Beatrix Belclaire, Your cousin. She seems to have inherited your family's blood more than you have, and takes the business seriously.

>Thomas O hare, a good friend of yours and a professor in history at a near by university. He has a lot of worldly knowledge and is an expert on other cultures.

>Samiul Hopkinson, an expert at illusions and trickery. A thief who has great slight of hand, who's good with smoke and mirrors.

We're probably going to encounter supernatural enemies. She seems like the best person to deal with that kind of problem.

Waiting for you inside of the coach, sitting off to the side reading a book, is your younger Cousin, Beatrix Belclaire. Her mother was your father's younger sister, and as such she adopted a different name upon marriage. Despite not bearing the last name of Battel, Beatrix takes her blood rather seriously, dedicating her life to hunting strange and odd creatures. The alleged beasts that go bump in the night, all thanks to that curious ability of hers. One you'd never really seen in peson

As such she was dressed up in an unladylike manner, in your opinion at least. A faded blue cloak covered her form, brown boots strapped to her feet, honestly she dressed more like a man than a proper woman. The only thing remotely feminine about her was her long brown hair that went over her shoulder. Even at the age of 18 she hadn't been thinking about marriage. Not that you thought any man would take her anyway.

Giving her a small nod of your head you sit down across from her, placing your hat down next to you. You hear the sound of the coachman cracking the rains and the coach starts moving. Running a hand through your hair you smile, over at the girl, offering your hand to her. Close her book the girl stares up at you, a sigh escaping her lips.

"Greetings cousin. I suppose you want to cut to the chase, as you say, and talk about our cut of the pay?" She was as blunt as ever, not that she was entirely wrong, you never were one to beat around the bush... Of course her lack of faith in you as a person kind of stung.

>Do as she says and cut to the chase.
>Deny her claims and try to initiate casual conversation.
>Respond with an insult of your own.

You shrug your shoulders, leaning back in your seat. She was always difficult to get along with, you knew this. You look out the side of the coach, watching the scenery go by as you approach the nearing forest. You feel a rain drop splash against your cheek, implying that a storm was coming. Smirknig you lean forward in your seat looking over at your cousin.

"It's a simple arrangement! I was thinking of making the prophets half and half. An equal share for you and I. We won't be making a fortune from this job, but it should be enough to keep us fed for a week. Perhaps you could buy another one of those..." You glare at her book grimacing.

"Another what? Speak up cousin." The girl mutters, placing her book by her side. If looks could kill, the glare she gave you would have left you gutted by the side of the road. Apparently she wasn't too fond of the tone you took.

Coughing you smiled back at her, placing your hands behind you head, stretching your feet out. "Does it matter? I think not my girl, you can purchase whatever it is you want with your share of the cash. It's a simple investigation job, find some missing persons. Of course the town is making up rumors that some sort of creature is the cause. Ridiculous!" Your cousin knew all about your staunch skepticism. You spit out the window before continuing. "What I think is some poor dullards got lost on their way in the woods."

Beatrix's gaze grew dull for a moment as the carriage shoot slightly from some bumpin the road.Shadows started to cast over the carriage, implying that you'd already reached the woods outside of town. "If it's such a simple matter, then why bring me along? For that matter, for such a mundane task, you should be helping from the good of your heart should you know? The Battel family's work is a charity, not a job. We have only one duty."

>Apologize, agree that she is right, we have family honor.
>Insist that you need the money.
>Laugh in her face.
>Write in.
