With a heavy heart you finally laid your father to rest, after almost a decade of stagnation caused by his slow descent to madness,
Constantly paranoid your father dismissed all his advisors, and took to staying in his chambers, only leaving to perform the most critical
state functions, effectively leaving the government paralyzed even as the southern greenskins grow ever bolder and to the north there are rumors of
the lizardmen falling under the rule of a mighty dragon, possibly even an ancient elder dragon if there is any truth the rumors...

The loss of several outposts both on the surface and in the underdark is the cause for much concern among our people, trade and contact with the outside world has dropped
off considerably as well, with only the bravest merchants choosing to risk leaving the mountain fortress to trade with the human tribals to the east or the elven colonies to our west.
Our allies also have called for aid several times, but their calls have been ignored due to your father's condition.

With much pomp and ceremony, you don your crown and walk to the training ground, where the troops stand in parade formation. As you reach the balcony overlooking the grounds, their commander, Captain Eirik Stonehand, turns to salute you, followed by the rest of the army. The men look crisp and ordered with their freshly polished armor and weapons, but you know they are unblooded and have not yet faced the enemies of the Dwarven people.

You go on to watch several training exercises and war games before inspecting the rest of the battlements and tunnel entrances, deeming them secure, as they had been well taken care of, even during the depths of your fathers madness.

As you return to the throne room for even more ceremony, an alarm is raised as a lone rider approaches the western gate. He calls out in heavily accented dwarvish, his way of speaking instantly outing him as an elf.

What shall we do?

Veras Angelos, as he introduces himself to you, heir to the green isles and Captain of the white guard, sits down in the great feasting hall, the mood is joyous as he comes, hearing of your coronation bearing a magic dagger of the finest Elven make and a treaty of friendship. Tankards of ale are broken out and a fine meal made from boar hunted from the mountainside that very morning encrusted with the finest herbs around.

As the evening goes on, you learn that the Elves are facing both enemies in their homeland as well as the Orcs in their colonies near our lands. They claim that while they can defend their lands, they lack the strength to launch an expedition into the orc lands and shatter them, as was done in ages past.

They wish for us to join with them in this expedition and destroy the greenskin threat.

As the night wears on, you can tell he has clearly overserved himself on the Dwarven Ale, and have him escorted to his chambers.

He is visibly pleased with your choice and requests to stay a few days to rest and experience dwarven life before returning home.

He also requests you attend a sparring session with him in the training grounds.

Before you decide to spar with him, more pressing matters of state present themselves...

In the meantime the clans are called to order. The Bloodaxes are enraged about our alliance with the Elves and want to gut their emissary and send them back his entrails...

The Blacksteels are concerned about us sending so much of our strength south, they believe it is foolish to take such risks and suspect an Elven ruse

They both are causing trouble and refuse to commit their resources to the southern campaign, unfortunately at this point we can only accomodate one,

You party returns from the east with news from the human lands, things are much the same with tribes fighting each other, proving once more that mankind is its own worst enemy.

The human chiefdoms are vying for our support in their internal wars and have sent our party back with several gifts including slaves, trinkets and the blessings of the human gods

Meanwhile our scouts to the south report a massive orc horde has formed around a charismatic young warlord. who seemingly is immortal. There are rumors of his consorting with dark gods.....

You have the army institute a harsher training regimen for the troops for next few weeks before the campaign, in the meantime you recruit another 500 men for the Royal Army, bringing our numbers up to 3000 men, even though 500 are on permanent duty as guards for our Mountain Fortress.

In addition a small force is sent out to reclaim an abandoned southern outpost we can use to launch the expedition to the south.

A few weeks pass and the sound of Elvish warhorns can be heard outside the gate. You and your honor guard move to the ramparts to see 1000 Elven warriors standing in perfect formation outside our gates.

They stay overnight but the army moves at dawn, with 3500 men moving together, we camp the first night at our outpost, however our scouts report the orc horde nearby, only a days march away.

Several plans are proposed, the first by the Elves involves using a narrow mountain pass to ambush and trap the greenskins.

One of our officers offers to play the role of a bait patrol leading the orcs back to our outpost, which is on high ground and highly defensible.

The king is also open to other plans..

Keep some of the force ready for a countercharge though, the Warboss is supposedly smart. He may see the ambush coming and we should have a second plan in place, which could be just holding ground with our more elite troops at the camp.

Elven archers ring the high ridge around the pass while elite Dwarven infantry hold the entrance. We also keep a large number of infantry a few miles back in reserve to react to unexpected changes in the plan...

The warlord is smarter than you expect, splitting his force into several groups, the group that travelled through the pass is quickly destroyed while 2 others converge on our reserve camp. Our reserve infantry put up a good fight, but are forced to withdraw after taking heavy casualties. Meanwhile the ambush force is virtually untouched, with a handful of casualties in the blocking infantry.

If the ambush force does'nt move soon they will be surrounded and potentially overrun.

What should we do?

The troops find one of the higher paths through the mountains and form up, quick marching south.

A group of elven rangers moves ahead of the column searching for threats and opportunities.

Finally the rangers come across an orc camp, definitely in their rear area. It seems to be filled with provisions as well as women and children

Whats our next move?

The army rushes into the camp under cover of darkness taking all provisions needing and setting fire to the rest, the also set fire to the rest of the camp.

Resistance is light as the few orc warriors are easily cut down and several women and children who take up arms are quickly put down, after a few minutes of brutal fighting our men quietly melt back into the night....

After another day of marching south the lands begins to open up into the southern wastes, the homeland of the orcs. Fortunate we looted the enemy supplies as foraging for an army of any size in the wastes is borderline impossible.

Meanwhile back at our fortress, the main orc army has arrived in force, almost 6000 orcs are a part of a siege according to our sentries best guesses.

The other part of our army, mostly made up of our greenest troops and oldest warriors was able to fall back into the fortress and we estimate we have around 2000 men equipped and ready to fight. In addition in response to the siege the Bloodaxe and Blacksteel clans have released part of their clan armies to the cities defense, adding another 1000 men from each clan to our numbers bringing our forces up to around 4000 effectives.

Whats our next move?(this is a write in)

Also guys I will be answering intermittently throughout the day so dont be alarmed if I take an hour or two between posts. I will be back home for more steady posting around 5pm eastern time tonight

Our fortress has never been breached, also both Logan and Ivar are still at the Dwarf fortress.

Our forces in the field are led by Captain Eirik Stonehand, while the Elves are led by a Senior Captain of the White Guard, a force generally considered to be their elite troops.

The terrain around the fortress is mountainous and there are several small postern gates allowing for ambush of a sieging force.

We also have a few heavy ballistas in storage that can be mounted atop the battlements and can harrass enemy troops and counter enemy siege weapons.

Ivar is our only mage, but he is capable of powerful close range fire magic, and also of lobbing stones and erecting walls using earth magic

Eirik and the Elven commander pore over maps of the waste in the command tent, unfortunately the maps are very old and do not account for current orcish positions.

We believe we are a few days march from the main orc settlement to the south, we are also a weeks march from our own fortress now.

We believe most of the orc strength is involved in the siege, leaving their main city virtually unprotected

well i suggest.

a) have defenses prepared and siege equipment deployed.
b) see if we can have our courtly mage raise a secondary set of rough stone walls just beyond our current ones. thus they'd have to breached through both. hed have to work like a machine though.
c) send 500 elves back to harass and pester the siege forces of the orcs, so that every day they're numbers dwindle slowly and there supplies run low. the elf rangers would do well, appearing at range, unleashing a few volleys then out running the pursuing forces. repeat.
d) send out remaining scouts and approach orc capital.

oh! and have the defending dwarves try to construct some standard trebuchets. with there superior engineering and materials they'd be bound to out range anything the orcs can build. and without siege equipment the orcs will be in a bad way.

500 Elves are sent back to defend the fortress while our remaining 1500 men press on to the enemy capital

Meanwhile back at the fortress, the old ballistae are placed on the battlements after almost a century of storage and Ivar has erected a small outer wall, harrying attackers and preventing easy approach to our main defenses.

The ballistae begin firing volley after volley into the orcish siege camp, their massive bolts reaping a terrible harvest...

Our scouts approach Gul' Durak, the main settlemment of the orcish people, its simple ditch and spike defenses providing little proof against a determined assault

From a distance the town appears sleepy and minimally defended

I am not sure how wise it is to attack an big orc town, with our small army that we have at this point there.

We should act quick anyway, either smaller stealth group clears the way for main army or we charge with whole army giving them no time to gather defenders.
