On second thought I vote for humans in the mana wastes.
Humans in the mana wastes is the winner. Due to the Humans unique trait you get to select an additional starting perk.
A) Gift of the Magi- Raises magical rating to Average, provides tomes and teachings from ancient Mages, though you cannot understand them yet.
B) Resist and Bite- You have molded yourselves to the harsh climate and are resistant to it's effects. Increases your combat abilities in the Mana Wastes
C) Gnomish Workshop- You possess the blueprints to a gnomish workshop along with the tools to construct it.
D) Altar of Illumination- Your people worship the Celestials and carry with them a massive marble altar. Prayer and service to the Celestials and their God may provide you with good fortune. Though their demands may be steep.

I'd rather our people didn't constantly go insane
Wind whipped through the tattered folds of a stout tent, causing blinding sunlight to flood the ground. A rugged man blinked wearily, almost immune to the harsh conditions he resided in. A groan escaped him as he rose from the ground, dirt and dust falling off him and swirling in the wind. He strapped on his boots, ragged torn things made from the hide of an animal ill-suited for these conditions, as evidenced by the poor protection they offered. Striding out of the tent he surveyed his camp. A cluster of tents, six in all, lay squatting amidst the towering sand dunes and bluish stones. A few people milled about, having started their day not long ago. He noted two men patrolling the perimeter of the camp, each equipped with a bone club and dressed in a similarly shabby fashion to himself. The villages only child skipped alongside her mother as they ventured from stone to stone, collecting insects for food. To the east, at the edge of the camp, was the Elder's hut, its cloth exterior encircled by an army of bluish rocks, each with a crude face etched into it, and facing the hut.

Check the (depressing) villagers.
We really need to get tech.
And more people.
The man decides to check on his villagers, it is not uncommon for them to have grievances when he does so. Despite his best efforts the limited resources and harsh conditions make it impossible to deal with their concerns in a pragmatic way. As he makes his way into the main camp one of the patrolling men waves to him and shouts a friendly greeting, ' Good morning Theron!" the man yells. Theron waves back and cracks a smile, barely visible beneath his unkempt brown beard. In a nearby tent a young boy pokes his head out. You greet the boy warmly and inquire how he's doing. Immediately you are bombarded with the details of his day, from the time he burned his foot on a particularly hot rock, to the time he thought he saw a cow grazing in the sand, but that was just a mirage. Soon the teen's voice faded to a constant buzzing in your ears.
A) Resume paying attention
B) Dismiss the boy
