This is a thread created for the discussion of Quest threads, as well as sharing of advice and guidance for aspiring or current QM's. Posters looking for advice on tabletop games should look elsewhere.

Please do not shitpost, and please report any shit posters attempting to derail discussion or cause strife. This means avoiding tripfag drama or discussion about subjects such as getting rid of /qst/.

>QM Question
If you have to, what kind of genre would you say your quest falls under as a whole? Did you plan for it to be this way?

Which Quest(s) are you currently binging/lurking/playing and would you recommend it to anyone else?

>Bonus Question
How do you feel about the moderation on /qst/?

re-asking from last thread

I just had a crushing defeat to my ego. Is now a good time as any to run a quest?

Are quests a good way to deal with sadness?

>>449036
>How do you feel about the moderation on /qst/?
What moderation? I haven't seen any.
>>
>>449044
Run something that's light and comfy, with minimal heavy themes.

>moderation
There was a ton of deleted shitposts but the interaction came very late.
>>
>>449044
>Are quests a good way to deal with sadness?
No idea. Running a successful one could help but there is also a chance you aren't cut out for it and the quest just gets ignored which could hurt.

My advice is to just read quests instead. Go in the archives and find something lighthearted and long to kill some time.
>>
>>449036
>moderation on /qst/
>>
>>449036
>what does my quest fall under
A failure that could have gone places if I prepared and ran on a proper platform.
>what quests am I into?
Banished quest, cause it's banished quest. Any recommendations btw? Stuck in westerns quest is meh. I'm a big fan of the witcher so might start a stuck in the witcher quest. Probably won't though.
>how do I feel bout the moderation?
Well this is a good board, moderation doesn't need to be enforced all that often. Shitting on fags that come here for stupid shit is always fun, shame they have to take up so much space each time they do it though.
>>
>>449065
>stuck in westerns
Yeah autocorrect also affects my QMing.
Stuck in westeros is what I mean.

I announced this on Twitter earlier in the week, but for any players who don't follow me there, Dark Gate Academy will be returning next Friday, August 12th.

We have mods? It's actually astounding how long outright shitposts manage to stay up on this board most of the time.
>>
>>449055
>No idea. Running a successful one could help but there is also a chance you aren't cut out for it and the quest just gets ignored which could hurt.

I made a quest on /tg/ that did pretty well, had plenty of players.

Not sure how that would transition to /qst/. What's the difference in playerbases?

>>QM Question
>If you have to, what kind of genre would you say your quest falls under as a whole?
Anime/Shounen.

Speaking of which, Hero Guardian Quest continues tomorrow (Sunday) at 20:00-22:00 CET! The Climax of the Western Front Arc will commence!
>>
>>If you have to, what kind of genre would you say your quest falls under as a whole? Did you plan for it to be this way?

Cute girls doing cute things. And yup!

>>Which Quest(s) are you currently binging/lurking/playing and would you recommend it to anyone else?

This question should be related to technical aspects of question, in my humble yet rad as fuck opinion. Furthermore, Audit, MAQ, and I'm currently reading Blorp's quest from the start.

Fucking read them, man.

>>How do you feel about the moderation on /qst/?
Wut moderation?
>>
>>449036
>If you have to, what kind of genre would you say your quest falls under as a whole? Did you plan for it to be this way?
Probably Adventure, with a mix of sci-fi, drama, some romance and a bit of conspiracy. And no, during the first two threads I was winging it until I thought of possible ideas. Still, I wasn't expecting that my players would pursue a diplomatic route and avoid the entire "boss fight arc" that I planned. They get brownie points for that.

>Which Quest(s) are you currently binging/lurking/playing and would you recommend it to anyone else?
All my favorite drawquests are either dead or on a hiatus.

>How do you feel about the moderation on /qst/?
The cavalry always arrives late.

Probably action. Maybe a dash of adventure, but it's not like some warehouse in Jakarta or a temple in Nepal are terribly adventurous.

I want to do a "Warring States of America" quest about a post-apocalyptic America where the states war against each other to "restore the Presidency", is anyone interested?

I know the Warring States and Three Kingdoms period are completely different, but I got this idea after thinking about RoTK and its fanfiful characters.

>>449244
Honestly, Merc really would be the most appropriate QM to run a Macross quest
>>
>>449289
Define post-apocalyptic. Is it Mad Max-esque? Something like Fallout? Or is it just a general Divided States of America, more like Crimson Skies or Kaiserreich?
>>
>>449326
It's post-apocalyptic in the sense of Sangokushi, with no central authority and armed brigand bands wandering about raping and pillaging in the name of imagined ideologies.

A nuclear war happened and there are throngs of refugees wandering around the country, some prostituting themselves for a mere bowl of porridge.

Narcos from Mexico take advantage of the chaos and are constantly doing slave raids on the Texan border.

Canada has built a wall, guarded by more than a couple battalions to shoot on sight any American refugees who attempt to scale it.

The interior is a hellhole, where Texas is the only state strong enough for there to be some semblance of an organized state. Coastal areas are slightly better off with the rare trans-Atlantic/Pacific smugglers. There is an intricate series of fortifications and trenches around San Francisco and New York City.

A general race war is happening in the South, with white and black groups enslaving each other while they burn each others homes.

The internet is fragmented. What you can browse in Texas might not be the same as what you can browse in California. This can be attribute to ante-bellum tampering with the Internet's otherwise decentralised structure.
>>
>>449289
I honestly don't think the states would make any attempt at restoring the presidency. They'd just go about their business existing as independent nations.
>>
>>449370
Not if they were ran by an autist.

Cosmic Vs the late Reviewanon: Who did better reviews?
>>
>>449581
Reviewanon was a bit too longwinded saying things that could be said clearly in a few sentences but I feel he was more objective.

Cosmic is less wordy and gets his opinions out clearly but I feel he can't help having his own personal bias and tastes creep into his reviews. Humor is nice too, but humor doesn't make a better review per say.

>QM Question
If you have to, what kind of genre would you say your quest falls under as a whole? Did you plan for it to be this way?
...Adventure? There's a lot of talking and mysteries for my players to solve... Also politics. But there's usually a fair amount of action when it comes around, as well.

I guess the primary focus of the quest is on mystery. There's a lot which has been kept from you (the MC) and much of the quest thus far has revolved around trying to deal yourself into a game of intrigue you know neither the rules for, or the condition to win.

>Player Question

Almost all of the quests I followed regularly disappeared. Snakecatcher's still around, but it's ending.

Sorry for being such a newfag, but i don't quite understand how to work in this board. It seems quite fun, and i think it might be nice to try this quest thingy. But i don't quite understand the rules. So...

How do i create a quest or take part in one?

Currently not taking part on any quest because as i said, i don't quite get it yet. But i think i would enjoy something to have with powers, mutants or fighters. Can you guys recommend me any?

Hey, I run Contractor Quest. I feel its a pretty easy, straight forward quest that would be great for a first timer. No mutants or super powers, but you do have a pair of cybernetic fingers, so maybe you'll count that as close enough.

2+ choices have equal votes, QM does not want to combine them, so he makes a secondary vote for only those choices (usually on a rather short time limit), and the winner is the one that gets made.

>>449867
>>450244
>Kant-o-Celle is the best quest 4chan has ever seen.

>>
>>450251
4chan replies don't let you reply with the same exact message twice for five minutes after the reply.

Therefore, say you got two choices. You tell them to copy exactly:
>1
>2

Now people who respond with >1 or >2 can't samefag the votes within five minutes, giving you a five minute window to check actual votes.

I don't think it'll be terribly useful for /qst/ considering IDs, and so people just samefag using different devices.

It's called Touhou Underworld. There are two of them - one is with you as an assistant or wheelbarrow fixman to Rin and the other as an attendant to one of the Satori Youkais.

The one I'm referring to is the former.

The second one, I believe, is the one where Satori keeps you as a prisoner of her home, effectively - apparently the world outside her influence isn't so hot a place.

I had it saved on my computer. It was in the old Facebook Touhou group and someone linked it to me back then - that was in 2012.

I'm merely curious if its origins lie here or elsewhere.

I would like to start a new, lighthearted quest based on the works of Key.

It would take place in the New time line created at the end of Clannad: After Story.....

In this new timeline........

Akiko, Sanae and Haruko have been friends since High School.

Akiko and Haruko helped Sanae deliver Nagisa, and were also there when Ushio was born.

The three towns in Clannad, Kanon and air were merged to form one small city, instead of three small towns.

At the end of Air, Mizuzu went to the Angel Beats world before the events of Angel Beats, where she meets Yui and Saiyuri Kurata's little brother and becomes friends with them.

Yukito's body went into a coma when his spirit went into the bird and returned to his body after Mizuzu died.

Ayu is out of her coma and is living at Akiko's house.

Makoto is living as Akiko's house.

Shiori is recovering from her illness, but is still weak.

Saiyuri and Mai are going to a nursing school in the large hospital in Clannad, which is adding new
buildings to deal with new new patients from the
town of Kami, the town of Air.
Kotomi will return to Japan sometime during the campaign.

In this campaign, several characters from Key are chosen to become magical girls. Their mission:

Gather magical orbs by helping people in their city to bring Mizuzu back to life.

They will be chosen & assisted by the four monks who cursed Mizuzi and who spend 1000 years constantly reincarnating as rats, roaches, mice, and other pest animals, while keeping their human minds and remembering all of Mizuzu's reincarnations for the past 1000 years.

They are told by an angel that the only way that they can be redeemed for their sins is to bring Mizuzu back to life. But because their souls are so tainted, they need the help of innocents to gather the orbs needed to bring Mizuzu back to life.

Enter the Wishmakers.

What do you think.

What is a good dice rolling system?
An essential part of many quests (next to the choice about what to actually do) is dice rolling - to spice things up, to make players actually fail for once. I have little idea about probabilities though. Why is the 1d100, best of three, system so popular? Why not use those old rpg 3d6 dice? I also feel that sometimes, QMs could've just let players fail without dice roll - or is that perceived as "railroading"?
>>
>>450627
I think requiring people to know not just one, but several key titles AND magical girl stuff is a little bit excessive.

There's precedent for it, ie. Fate/Stay, but all the Key titles were deliberately standalone within their own continuities, and never encouraged knowing the others.

I dunno, you tell me how many people on qst know Key back to front. It's not like I expected all those DBZ quests to get sizable audiences.
>>
>>450952
Personally I just use 1d6, following Roll to Dodge rules. Then again, my quest isn't very dice-heavy, simply using the dice to determine how well/badly a scene plays out.

Maybe something is wrong with me but I can't get hype for quests with slow update speeds. Even if they have action in them its like, alright, here I am, autoupdate on for the past two hours, what the hell QM?
Don't bloody expect your quests to survive if they can't match an average imageboard posters' attention span. I'm here to funpost and eat junk food not wait two days for something bland to update and tell me to 'try another door,' fuck.
There's no point in even keeping a thread open in a tab since so many of these shits are unreliable.

The exceptions that prove the rule are established QMs who strung along their audiences to this doomed plane. But even they don't wait 2+ goddamn hours for a post, except that one fuck and that other fuck, bless their shriveled shitposty hearts.

Maybe we should make it tradition for the OP to post up the update speed they'll commit to.

I've personally had the opposite problem, like I want to post updates every half hour and I used to get replies within ten-fifteen minutes of posting but here everything is just so damned slow lol.

I'm looking for a quest that I liked but can't find it in the archive. Could someone point me to a name? I should still be able to find the previous threads on foolz. Thanks.

I only read one thread, but I liked what I saw. It was a medieval setting and the MC had just gotten through ending a siege helping the attacking force from what I picked up. It hinted he used alchemy a lot, and he seemed to be newly contracted to be kings guard along with a handful of other characters. The thread had a duel between MC and another KG, it hinted she had some monstrous blood in her, so I guess the setting has magic as well. I think the thread ended with MC getting cheered up by a Princess and snow.

We would probably need a few months just to get all the chaff this board has made off of /tg/ and all the anti-questfags would be crowing about the fact that we should have kept the board and moved everything they despise (model painting, storytimes, generals, drawthreads, quests and civ management) onto other boards.

At what point is taking traits from a character you liked in another story (issues like personality or outlooks on life) copying?

I'm writing a quest inspired by a pretty good show I've seen, and there's this one character I just desperatly want to be represented in this world because he just fits so perfectly for the theme. It's a struggle

I think the biggest play of the game was when the Giants 3rd base coach put on the brakes for their catcher instead of trying to challenge Revere to force an out at home plate. And the next batter hit into an inning-ending double-play.

Also, I'm announcing that my quest "The King of Fighters Quest: Reborn" is resuming on the 10th of the month at the usual starting time (10 AM PST/1PM EST/5PM GMT).

Presence.

I'm not sure if it's an actual thing writing or storywise, but I love a character who can come into a scene and completely own it through the sheer presence of how they're characterized, what they do, and how they talk. When we look at villains, we love the best villains because of their ability to command and their ability to frighten, and that's presence. In the same way that the great heroes can command respect and honor from others as well.

I dunno, you could design a very physically appealing character and give them a very interesting backstory and a very interesting personality. But if they lack that certain presence, then I'll look for bestness elsewhere.

So I've been away from the quest scene since before the creation of /qst/, what's the deal with some quests still running on /tg/ and others running here?
>>
>>453391
Since /qst/ was made under VERY dubious circumstances (i.e. minority of assholes were just complaining very loudly), the mods haven't made an official rule about where quests should go. So quests that run on /tg/ do so either out of familiarity or protest, and mods don't do anything to them; if somebody jumps into the quest to tell you to go to /qst/, you can report him. However, some people want to try out this questing thing, or try out /qst/, so they run here.

So uh, I'm currently running my first quest but I fear my characters are too similar. I usually assign each character a trait of mine. But that creates problems; to me, they all feel too similar to one another. Like small fractions of what I actually am. They become incomplete personas. Any advice on writing full characters with each to their own unique personalities? I could probably solve this my self by sitting down and creating a diagram for each character that outlines their core characteristics but I'd like to hear the opinion of others first.

The thing is the majority of questers here just saw the letters /qst/, clicked on it, and shit post cause they have no idea what's going on. The quality of conversation and discussion in /tg/ quests was and is vastly better in quality than those found here on /qst/. That's my biggest annoyance keeping me from diving into running this quest.

The update speed thing is the primary reason I don't follow many quests besides the odd QM or two on /qst/, this place is so fucking boring - and compounding that with the lack of any discussion most of the time, I really am having a hard time adjusting.

What would be a good time to post then? An hour?
>>
>>454181
Problem is that people are constantly complaining that any quest that doesn't put out updates in a 20-30 minute window after the vote is over is too slow to bother following. It really ruins the ability for most QM's to slow down and take a little extra time to touch up on the writing in their updates.
>>
>>454196
The people that want 20 minute updates are unreasonable unless they want SOMINUS tier, 'I write 5 sentences without too much thought in them' updates.

30 minutes to an hour is the sweet spot I feel. Maybe a little over an hour if the update is a fat one.

Also I think QMs should post updates as they write them. Like as soon as they hit 3000 characters post the first part of the update.

It gives the players something to look at and discuss/engage about whilst also saying 'I am not dead and am still writing'

>>
>>454176
>The quality of conversation and discussion in /tg/ quests was and is vastly better in quality than those found here on /qst/.
And quantity.
For the longest time /tg/ was the board that would argue about anything, still is, and that gives the board its special vitality. It's full of argumentative nerds and all that brings, almost like these four or five bozos above me.
>>
Rolled 20 (1d20)

>>454353
Losing in only one round makes it a bad quest man, there's always the second roll and try
>>
>>454353
Because the guy with the +7 isn't always going be beat the guy with the +5. The guy with the +7 just has an edge.

It's just dungeons and dragons.
>>
>>454368
Ah yes. 'Keep rolling until you win'.

This goes very naturally with PCs that coast by on Shonen levels of willpower and toughness and literally can't take enough damage to actually lose a fight. The other thing that happens is that the PC suddenly becomes tougher or the enemies get weaker so you get closer to winning the more times you roll because the QM isn't prepared for failure and wants the fight to be over.
>>
>>454370
Dungeons and Dragons has you beat fixed ACs to do damage.

It doesn't have random DCs the fluctuate depending on how the monster rolls.
>>
>>454426
You got to roll for the goblins to attack though. This is just having the party and the goblins attack at once.
>>
>>454313
It's entirely randomized and thus does nothing to reflect the actual capabilities of either side.
>>
>>454402
>Implying the only thing that matters is whether you win or lose
What about making the fight interesting? What about the back and forth in advantages each combatant gets? What about the damages the MC incurs, forcing him to either retreat and heal, or face more enemies in increasingly dire straits?
>>
>>454439
But if the goblins roll higher it doesn't cancel out your attack roll if you beat their AC too.

Look it's fine if you just want dumb back and forth battles where you give your QMC a huge modifier for a climatic finish.

It's just not that interesting.
>>
>>454446
A failed roll doesn't have to be an absolute failure though. There are such things as glancing blows and whatnot.

Wouldn't you want a battle with a good back and forth tempo? Why would you want a battle where one side just dominates?
>>
>>454444
>making the fight interesting
Most fight scenes seem more interesting when the MC actually loses and has to retreat, loses a finger, has to get help quickly, etc.
>>
Novice QM here with one quest under my belt. Just curious to know whether, in general, scientific details and explanations are appreciated. Is there an audience for that sort of stuff? I've been planning/writing a space opera quest over the last week or so and constantly find myself avoiding hand-waving, instead I end up spending hours researching possible hard sci-fi solutions. Would this come across as tedious or help with the immersion?
>>
>>454458
Probably help with the immersion, but only give detailed answers OOC in-between the actual story posts. Make sure it doesn't slow down the actual speed of writing, and be prepared for other pedantic science-minded anons to go full autism.
>>
>>454451
>good back and forth tempo
Even in traditional rpgs with friends and snacks, most fights just seem timeconsuming to me. One dice roll, win or lose, would be fine for me - like with skill rolls.

>>454458
>scientific details and explanations are appreciated
They are, but maybe not enough if you don't like researching this area. I believe, a well grounded setting can help immensely with the story as well: You can offer options for players, have interesting limitations...
>>
>>454465
>One dice roll, win or lose, would be fine for me
Eh that's even more RNG arbitrary than opposing rolls.
>>
>>454462
>>454465

What about having a side character be a full on sperg who explains stuff in dialogue? I enjoy the research but would be a bit disappointed if something I've worked on isn't even brought to light simply because none of my players ask about it OOC.
>>
>>454480
It'd be alright if it were relevant to the situation, or helped with the worldbuilding, make the setting for interesting.

If they decide to just suddenly interject about the Interplanetary Transport Network and langrange points in the middle of, for example, hotwiring a starfighter, then it's a problem.

Would make the player decision more informed, good thing! And better than a meta post about how the world works!

The MC would have to be pretty clueless to let someone else explain these things though.
>>
Am I the only one bothered by the rampant name/tripfagging? Maybe i'm just a faggot, it just bothers me to see the shit when we have ID's.

Eh, if it's an actual QM tripfagging, I don't mind. They are our content creators after all. Without them, we wouldn't even have quests.
>>
>>454507
Just in general.
Especially in the GoT quests, but I guess power fantasy quests attract them.
>>
>>454505
Loads of civ players?
>>454501
>hate dice
But how can you make players fail at something without making them feel that they never had a chance?
"Yo, I want to chop that knight's head off!"
"You're dead now."
"wft! Why?"
"The knight killed you, you were slow and he was faster, end of story."
"Unfaaaaiiiir!"
>>
>>454505
Unfortunately, the ID system can be abused rather easily. I don't have a problem with it since most of them are QMs.

Plus it facilitated the Velo Shitstorm.

They are a special breed man. Not even just a standard powerfantasy quest has that much rampant autism.

I remember one QM who claimed he wanted the players to think through their actions and make elaborate plans. Everyone promptly left after he had the enemies figure everything out for a really bullshit reason and rendered all the planning worthless.
>>
>>455296
I'm curious about that.

What do the present QMs consider intelligent enemies to be, and do any really expect their players to think through their actions or make elaborate plans?

>>What do the present QMs consider intelligent enemies to be, and do any really expect their players to think through their actions or make elaborate plans?
Honestly, I'd write independent enemies instead and have them running their own plots parallel to the players plots without letting the players plot influence my writing.

If they manage to get information about what the players are doing, then they'd react but most of the time they'd have their own schemes.

But this comes down to how much you can trust yourself.

So I have a light term coming up in school, and I have been sitting on an idea for a quest for a while, but some input on if its actually feasible will do some good on knocking me off the fence.

So my idea is for the MC to get press-ganged into the head of a newly sprouted tank program, being in charge of tactics, recruitment, training and command in the field, with oversight of the R&D division, giving them say in what direction the tank development takes, what tactics are developed, and what skills each tank crew focuses on.

I'm thinking of keeping the cast grounded in the various other branch commanders, your direct subordinates, the tank commanders of your unit, and your direct superiors so as to avoid serious bloat every time a new tank crew comes online.

Development would focus on three factors, them being Firepower, Maneuverability, and armor, with reliability being more dependent on how much a design has been used (as to work all the kinks out). As you progress you can dedicate more focus to each, and reap the benefits(better engines, larger guns, superior armor plate compositions and angling) In addition, what level of actual experience and development your R&D team has will determine what sorts of vehicles they will produce, with them being capable of little in the way of casting or welding to start with.

I'm still seriously tinkering with the setting, since I'm unsure whether to sink the time to put serious thought into the world this would be taking place in, or kitbashing some animu around it and branching out from there.

But even with the world not being hammered out, I'm fairly confident in the actual story structure, with a series of engagements during a campaign(or something similar) with downtime in between, where you get to work on tactics, training, development, and relationships between characters.

What say ye, Writefags and voters?

>>456603
I'd vote for you, Ace.

Dark Gate Academy Review
7 threads read out of 25, mild spoilers ahead

>Synopsis
You are a delinquent transferred to a school that fights off evil magical monsters at night while living on campus. Oh, and you live in an anime.

>”Darkword” [sic]
Slice-of-life shenanigans litter the day while terrifying, short-lived nightmares are sprinkled at night. In the seven threads I’ve read, the events during the day are by far the most entertaining, which is a damn shame because I think you could do a lot with being transported to constantly differing settings.

There was a moment where the main character and some irrelevant character is split off from the rest of the students in a humongous maze. Everything was shaping up to be something interesting. Tension is continually built, danger layering with every step. Then suddenly, it proceeds to run its head straight into a wall. All that needed to be removed was what amounted to “we sat there and waited while staring at the floor.” Risk and danger needs work, especially with what was built.

>Danger
In a dangerously unforgiving world where students die at the drop of a hat, you are given the apparent boon of nigh invincibility. It is a good juxtaposition; in your first trip, you meet the kid who is the top of your class, and then you watch as he’s promptly emptied like a tube of Go-gurt. It’s a cheap trope that works, but the person being set up to fail actually has to do something before he dies. Besides that, I’ve never felt that the significant threat was at that perilous. Most people seem to get out unscathed. Part of this has to do with quest mechanics, which will be discussed later.

>Descriptions
Most of the quest consists of decent writing, but the action could use some work.

“She stands high, and swings her sword down and across, removing the head. More of that green slime bursts from the body, some of it getting on your arm, burning like lava…You and Rei move to a good distance as the bullet pierces into the Spider's abdomen, which then explodes into a horrible, gooey mess.”

“Bursts” is a wonderful, exciting word. “Burning like lava” is fantastic. “Removing” is not. How is she removing the head? Did she just pop it off like a bottle cap? Did the blade sink into the flesh, producing a sickening sound as it cuts clean through? Are we just moving, or are we hauling ass? Why is the mess horrible? Does it reek of death and rot? Senses are powerful, and they’re also something missing from your descriptions of new Darkworld environments. Back it up with intense verbs and there’s a gripping action scene.
>>
>>456680
>Characters
Despite cast bloat, the character interactions are great. Fantastic moments are frequent and well varied; they can be laced with wit, hysterically funny, or gut-wrenchingly depressing. With the waifu-bait cranked up to 11, there’s bound to be someone in the cast you would care for.

[Ryoji]
This is you. You’re supposed to be a delinquent, but you dropped that act real quick. The prompts in the beginning were fantastic. They were full of flair and packed a punch, but like the delinquent history, it was placed in the backburner.

[Saki]
The generic tsundere waifu that gets fleshed out to a decent degree. I think that she warmed up too fast to the arrogant, thieving, PoS Ryoiji that goes through dead kids’ lockers, but I guess you can chalk that up to “it’s her personality.”

[Rei]
A girl who’s way too willing to kiss someone she only just met, especially someone with smoker’s breath. Her relationship with Akira is interesting, giving her a much needed characterization that balances out “eager to jump on MC’s monster cock.”

[Kosuke]
Clever character, in terms of design. He’s there to tag along with your shit for one reason or another, his excuses already set up from the foundation up.

Voices for each character were established nicely considering the bloat, Sayeka’s especially. The pictures included are a godsend too. Visual aid is a great help, a point made very evident when Ken talked again and I had absolutely no idea who he was. With all this, the cast ends up having numerous distinct characters whose names are actually memorable. But unsurprisingly, there inevitably are flat characters resulting from the lack of time.

“We were surrounded and scared, but you kept a level head and pulled us all out.”

This particular line of dialogue stood out, and thankfully, this dip in quality is uncommon. From one character to another, this line of dialogue was spoken within a group that experienced an event, and its sole purpose is to inform the reader of what had transpired. I would wonder if Booker Man was wrist deep in a pig when this was written.

Accompanying picture brought to you by Soma.

>>
>>456686
>Mechanics
Booker Man is an excellent QM. With a relatively consistent update time of around 30 minutes, he often manages to provide prompts whose roads divert far enough that you would think you’re not on a railroad. But sometimes, it should’ve continued rather than give an option at all.

“’Psst Ryoji, over here!’ she whispers to you.”

“>Uhh... sure.”
“>Why are you whispering? Are we spies now?”

The ultimatum, however, was fantastic. Giving the players the option to end the quest or continue, Booker Man has successfully pulled off the only way to maintain player agency all the while keeping the main character’s personality; he had greased up the players with a waifu and rich exposition so they’d be invested. Smooth.

When it comes to rolling, there’s never a DC given. Despite that, you can get a good feel that 50 is average. Keep in mind that outside of Best of 1, 50 is not average in probability. At some point it was switched from a Bo3 to a Bo5 1d100. The possibility of rolling at least a 70 with the latter is around 90%, which is shockingly high. There are no critfails, which leads back to the difficulty of creating tension and danger. Would someone’s face get dissolved with a low enough roll? Perhaps, but I don’t think it would fit with the mood given so far. Permanent incapacitation is an easy solution, and it should have either happened with Daisuke or someone close down the line. Maybe it did happen later on, but right now the mood is wishy-washy.

As for writing, there is the occasionally the odd it’s/its, where/were, or typo. There are also commas being kidnapped in the dead of night to be placed where they don’t belong. However, these are all non-noticeable bumps in the road, meaning they’re completely excusable.

But the OP. The OP for 25 threads has remained unchanged.

“However, the Dark Gate Academy is home to students of truly extraordinary abilities. The ability to sense the presence of these evil Darkword creatures, and defeat them in combat, sending them back through the gate.”

Abilities to ability, the strange little comma treating “defeat them in combat” as an independent clause, “Darkword” for god’s sake! This was the very first post, meaning there was all the time in the world to get this right. This is only 2 sentences. At this point I’m convinced this is some gag.

>Final Thoughts
Dark Gate Academy is an entertaining read, given that you understand what you are getting yourself into; it’s surprisingly consistent so far. Everything appears to be well thought out and well executed too. With seven threads down, I can give this with sound confidence a score of…

IT’S FUCKING ANIME/10

If you like that kind of thing, then this might just be right up your alley. With the conclusion of this far-too-long review, I’ll leave you with this brilliant line:

I feel like the QM should be the only one with a name and trip in his own thread; it just makes the Quest easier to read that way. Besides, if their ID changes for whatever reason (like phone-posting for instance) they still have their name and trip.
I've tried reading a few Quests on this board whose QMs had no name and trip, and I just couldn't get into them. I always had that thought in the back of my mind that any Anon could impersonate the QM very easily to get the result they wanted to win.

Whirlpool Quest Review
8 threads read out of 12 along with the start of thread 9.

>Synopsis
You are sent to another planet to collect water for your dehydrated planet. You end up getting a waifu instead.

>Setting
There’s some variety in the landscape, as there rightfully should be when you’re travelling the world. Though, everything is quickly sidetracked as characters are introduced, fleshing out the world by efficient infodumps. Efficient, but infodumps nonetheless. It provides the motivations for a large group of characters while giving the player a goal to obtain. Do take note that this goal is better written, seeing as how it is decided by the player. It’s more personal; it’s a goal created with agency.

>Joke Inputs
The main character emerges in a hostile alien world as a futanari with cat ears on her diving helmet. It’s added to the OP posts while in updates there are constant references to hormonal imbalances. Although it dies down later on, it was irritating to read. With every humoring of joke inputs, the mood of the quest is undermined further and further. This doesn’t appear to be a joke quest, nor does it seem the QM intended it to be one.

>Voice
Voice is very much there, in both narrative and dialogue. Unfortunately, I find the speech of the designated love interest to be awful in conjunction with the writing style. When the main character is brought to said interest’s town, it’s quickly revealed that everybody here converses like a robot.

“I am 20 years of age. Do note that, compared to our first generation, our bodies age much slower upon reaching physical maturity to maximize our lifespans. Does that sate your curiosity?”

There’s nothing inherently wrong with characterizing characters a certain way. It is with the conjunction of the detached narrative tone that makes me think, “Am I watching a robot describe a conversation between two other robots?”

Unsurprisingly, the story turns south when it vomits exposition in dense paragraphs. Information of this nature especially should be doled out with the passage of time. Speaking of robots, often times dialogue is replaced by a summary.

“Errai apologizes for the ramshackle aesthetic and claims that the place is genuinely clean despite its appearance. You tell her that it's okay and ask her about what they eat here.”

This is the definition of detached. The player is often taken out of the moment and is being told the story second hand, leaving them feeling as if they’ve been left in the cold. It is only for a moment, however, as the story picks back up at an exciting pace. There is a moment when two characters of opposing cultures meet; a moment where their differing voices are glaringly clear. I’ll choose to refrain from spoiling, but do keep in mind this was only a relatively small segment of the quest.

>Direction
Whirlpool quest is a drawquest that operates solely on write-ins until later where occasional prompts are given. QMing a write-in only quest is difficult. Often times at the end of updates there shouldn’t be a prompt. There’s nothing to do, and the only thing there is to do is to continue the story. What happens instead are small slice of life moments created by grasping at straws, all made tedious by the update speed. Imagine waiting for hours for an update that amounts to you drawing a crude finger-painting on a countertop, because that did happen. If there are no prompts, integrate them in the story seamlessly. How can a player offer something when there are no tools to use?

As the story progresses, this problem is bettered by experience. With both a clear goal and more carrots being dangled, there is certainly more room to work with than previously.

>Mechanics
The die rarely does anything of significance, but there is a 1d6.

The drawings are cute. Boasting a consistent theme of “heartwarmingly adorable,” they are a nice replacement for intense description in the narration. A lovely addition, undoubtedly.

Update times are sporadic. They can range from a few hours to “whoops, I fell asleep my bad.” The QM does announce when there is an update on discord, however. The problem is not so much about the long wait but with the inconsistency. I’d imagine this quest to be difficult to keep up with.

A small thing to note but there seems to be a lack of open threads: unfinished plotlines or small hints to a deeper exposition. Rarely would you find a detail being brought into relevancy from a thread way back. Not necessary, but the story would be more interesting for it. This does happen once, but only once so far.

As for grammar, there’s little to point out. Mistakes are unobtrusive and shouldn’t impact anything.

>Final Thoughts
If you enjoy drawquests, I would say give it a whirl(pool). Despite the rough beginning, you’d find that there’s a surprising amount of thought and love being put into the world. With every thread you’ll find the experience to be smoother, and perhaps you’ll be sucked into something interesting. With 8.1 threads in, I will firmly appraise Whirlpool Quest with a score of:

LOVELY WORLDBUILDING/10

Don’t be turned off by the fact that it’s a “fanfic quest”; it’s original enough to stand by on its own legs. With that, let me conclude with my favorite moment.

“You blatantly admit that you want to engage in explicit sexual relations with her vaginal cavity.”

I do like reading Cosmic's reviews, but thank you.
>>
I'll try to respond to the criticism provided. Thank you for the review, addressing problems I never noticed while helping me recognize what I did get right.

>>457188
>>457190
>Synopsis
It's a Waterworks fanfic, a webcomic hosted on MS Paint Fan Adventures. Admittedly I might've doted too much on the companion.

>Joke Inputs
I know it's naive of me for thinking, but I believe that it's good sportsmanship to run with joke inputs and a sign of skill to work with what you've got. Also, I only disregard commands that contradict the consensus.

>Voice
The verbose speech patterns are intended to signify the difference in culture and upbringing. Later on, you'll notice the characters bearing different speech quirks. One for example, talks like she's a 50's noir dame while another talks with heavy fantasy speak.

Still, I do believe I have problems with character speech. Also, I use speech summaries because it's rather difficult to portray near-simultaneous speech without attaching character tags.

>[character 1]: "Like this"
>[character 2]: "It might be practical though"

>Direction
I admit my inexperience, I'm a bit aimless with dictating my players. I use prompts in events with very clear choices to do while the rest of the time I let the players pleasantly surprise me.

>Mechanics

>Personal thoughts
I think one gripe I might have is assuming that my players are keen, observant and very smart. I placed a lot of "secret hints" and references that I wished my players would implore further or at least recognize; but then in the end it just goes off to become easter eggs, abandoned plot threads as well as "future material". At least sometimes the players remember a detail mentioned in past threads and it makes me very giddy.

My strategy for plotting seems to be "Go on a sandbox until the QM is inspired to have a goal."

The remaining threads shouldn't be long due to sporadic updates, but because of the tremendous plot weight, exposition seems to be heavy.

The remaining threads up to the current one has a more accelerated pace when it comes to the plot, but as a possible consequence the exposition became heavier.
>>
>>457190
>>457212
Whoops, forgot to address this.

>Update speed
Yeah, despite my best attempts at maintaining a regular pace. A large chunk of the delay is spent conceptualizing the next update and figuring out how to be sure the follow up events make sense. Sometimes I go through three drafts before settling on something. Alternatively I'm just busy dealing with IRL matters. Still, I managed to pace a good 1-3 hours unless something happens IRL. Once I've figured everything out, the rest of the updates is relatively easy unless it's portraying something difficult for the first time.

Lastly, as a desperate tactic I recycle assets like Monty Oum. You'd notice in updates that were posted within 40 minutes of player input.
>>
>>457207
I realize I should probably say what I actually like about your reviews instead of just saying I like them more.

In general the two you've done so far have both given off a vibe that is much more "average quest player" than what Cosmic does because a lot of the time his seem to come off like he's holding things to a much higher standard than they should be held to and seems to find faults that aren't really an issue in the grand scheme of things due to that.

I also feel like your attention to things like voice and just characters in general is a really important thing that Cosmic always seemed to lack, commenting in broad strokes on them had happened in his reviews but considering how character based quests tend to be I feel like more attention should be paid to them when reviewing things.

So yeah, keep up the good work.
Man, it's shockingly hard to not just completely shit on Cosmic like my dislike of the guy makes me want to do whenever I talk about him.
>>
>>457242
Eh, if you can get in 6 hours a day for that span, you're considered gold. A lot of the dudes have lives like work and commitments and all that jazz, just do it consistently and I don't think anyone'll shit on you for sessions.

>IT’S FUCKING ANIME/10

You'll be surprised. At a certain point in the Quest, the whole story just becomes an exercise in making the characters suffer. I can't actually think of anyone who accomplishes anything they want, or any affection that is requited.

Even the villains are deeply unhappy people!

Well received. The approach of having no prompts and only write-ins is interesting - it works with some player discussion.

>get into discussing the quests and decisions
True, nice when it happens. Has to be initiated and supported by the QM though, otherwise it (sometimes) dies down.

It's more entertaining to read too - otherwise it's just copy-pastas of decision prompts...

My only other problem is that I am in an obscure timezone by board standards, and can only run on/around weekends.
So the current thread is either dead, or I make 1-2 posts every day, which I doubt will be popular.
Should I archive this one even tough it's barely beyond fifty posts, and continue next time, or just scrap it and start where thread 1 ended? No important rolls were made in this thread so far.

She needs to feel real and relatable. She needs to feel like she's a part of the very essence of the MC and Anon. She needs to have either that special depth or quirkiness (or both) that'll cause people to become attached to her.

It'll only make it that much sweeter when you RIP HER AWAY FROM THEM AND WATCH THEM AS THEY CRY! GYAAAHAHAHAHA!... Or not.

But, seriously. A certain level of depth, realism, and cuteness/beauty is needed; plus added quirks, traits, and general personality. You can't love cardboard... Well... You -can- love cardboard, but it ain't the same as loving a -real- waifu.

>If you have to, what kind of genre would you say your quest falls under as a whole? Did you plan for it to be this way?

Anime/Shounen Action with a delightful delinquent theme/overtone.
I'm going with a very VN feel to it concerning options. Otherwise you'll find ruckus, violence, swearing, and an overall beat-em-up kinda feeling where you're split between your own hotblooded rage, manly spirit, or drive for justice.

>>

I'm an idiot.
I don’t think I would’ve read this if I had realized how long each chapter was. Also I lied when said I wouldn’t talk about language; I wasn't expecting this.

Paladin of Avalon
5 chapters read out of 26. Mild spoilers ahead.

>Synopsis
Wielding the Holy Light, you are a knight sent to an evil island to kill a traitor. You better buckle up.

>Setting
The island that the quest takes place on is one filled with monsters. Trolls, ratmen, and succubi inhabit this landscape. Borrowing from a great variety of sources, the world is a delightful blend of fantasy; greek mythology, Warcraft, and demons are some of many. It wasn’t until the third picture from Monster Girl Encyclopedia was pulled up did I realize something was awry, and even then I had doubts for some reason.

“What heresy can come to a mind not shaded by the Holy Light!”

Despite odd word choices like “shaded,” the beginning was strong. It was hilarious while being extremely flavorful, opting to narrate with the thoughts of a naïve and noble knight that packed every sentence with a punch. Not only was it exciting, but it drew me into the world. As par the course with every energetic idea, it proceeded to wither away as other elements are introduced. But that’s fine, as the story onward is equally exciting.

“The first thing you felt when approaching the swamps was the smell. The terrible odor of rotten eggs.”

There are a number of times where the landscape was vividly described through detail or senses, though not all. Still, this is good.

>Characters
The main character ends up travelling with three nonhumans. They’re all girls.

[Heinrich Osborne Vaylor von Baskerville]
The protagonist who is most certainly a character and not a blank slate. From his words to his actions, every second spent with Heinrich oozes decisiveness from the writer. It’s incredible. Not only does he grow, he does so gradually through player choices. He is a wonderful character and no doubt one of the best aspects of this quest.

[Marishka]
A cunning catgirl. Not only does she have meaningful things to say, her words have weight. It’s refreshing to see a capable character who isn’t muddled in hesitation. There’s also a surprising amount of excellent character development with her.

[Aella]
She’s the ditzy harpy that serves as comedy relief. There was an attempt at going further in depth with her character, but it felt really unremarkable.

[Alice]
Underage succubus. I don’t judge, but the story sometimes takes things a bit too far.

The interactions between the cast is cute and heartwarming. There’s lows and highs, providing a charming variety that never fails to bring forth a smile. They all have their special, distinct voices much like Heinrich. While I feel speech tics wouldn’t fix every leak, it gets the job done.

I won’t go too far into this, as relatively short as it is. There was a momentary lapse in judgement where the author had forgotten to take his hand off of his dick before he began writing. A certain picture especially stood out. Maybe I had missed the author’s intentions, but everything felt oddly out of place compared to the first two chapters.

When it was thought that lewd hour was over, out comes an incredible prompt which basically goes, “Who do you want to suck the poison out of someone’s asscheeks?”

The votes ended in favor of the main character, leaving me in hysterics.

There was also a bit of combat going on. It was descriptive enough to be followed smoothly and had enough substance to make the action interesting. It was pretty good.

>Mechanics
There are no dice rolling. Instead there is a morality point system depending on your choices which is tied to your paladin powers. This was fascinating as the QM could make players do something they normally wouldn’t or punish them for being inconsistent. Sadly, it was quickly forgotten about until it later returned out of the blue.

In the beginning, the player character was killed and the quest was reset to prove there were actually consequences. I have mixed feelings about this, but it did work to some extent. As the story went on, however, stupid decisions get much less severe.

Prompts vary. More often than not they are separated by humongous chunks of text in which quite a lot happens. Sometimes these prompts heavily decide your future, while at other times they do almost nothing. The good takeaway is that it is for certain the plot will move forward. Only once did the author render a decisive choice useless for the sake of the plot.

For the translation, there’s general grammar problems that gets much better. It’s somewhat noticeable, but it’s mitigated with the stylish narrative. The localization, on the other hand, is fantastic.

>Final Thoughts
Despite my blinding stupidity, it’s clear that the second picture reveals what this quest is about. Thus, I must bestow this quest with the virtuous rating of:

MONSTERGIRLS/10

The cast is wonderful and the world is rich; the story runs deeper than you’d expect and the “plot” is there too. There might be few bumps in the road, but it’s still one hell of a ride. And now, my favorite quote.

“Uncle lizard preferred saving his balls to saving his soul.”

Do you mean the spanking or the backgammon?
>Sadly, it was quickly forgotten about
As was explained by the QM, Heinrich was fighting on the side of "dark" creatures against other "dark" creatures. Points of Light had nowhere to appear from.

I will make sure to re-edit the text at some point and fix the mistakes. I was intending to do so for a while but it's kind of hard to find enough free time.

Planefag get in the discord, faggot
>>
Quest pitch:

You are a mercenary living in a Shadowrun-esque world where technology and magic coexist. Some time ago, you wound up in a fatal accident. A mysterious, powerful woman saved you and gave you a large apartment to live in. The trouble is, she forced you into a little game of hers. You, and several other sketchy individuals, have to pay off the apartment's sizeable rent (around millions of dollars) in a select number of installments. You all must use whatever resources you have on hand (merc contacts, magic, personal skills, crime) to earn enough money before the pay date.

Escaping the game seems to be impossible. The administrator, as she calls herself, appears to be both omnipresent and omnipotent. If everybody doesn't pay up on time, you'll all be punished heavily. It seems the only path is to play her game, and perhaps find a way to undermine the administrator along the way...

>Would you play?

>>
>>462199
I didn't realize the implications until you pointed it to me. In any case, those are not my intentions. When I mean punishment, I mean things like having secrets exposed, loved ones hurt or killed, limbs removed etc.
>>
>>462162
Combat heavy or combat lite?

Is it gonna be a sort of mind game or just shadowrunning to pay off the debt?
>>
>>462203
I guess the level of combat depends on how the players approach certain situations. If they want to use diplomacy, I'm not going to stop them, nor will I do so if they decide to have the characters charge in guns blazing.

Part mind games, but shadowrunning. I'd like to have alternate victory conditions to administrator's game, such as finding out her true name (or something similar).

Why is it shit?

A lot of classic literature is in first person past tense
>>
>>462972
IT'S MY OPINION AND THAT'S ALL I NEED

For a more salient answer it doesn't appeal to me.
And now a return to form.

>classic literature
>quests
>implying
>>
>>462972
You could probably do it, but I feel 2nd Person and then 1st Person present mesh better with the quest format.
>>
>>462972
First person could work, but gives off a different feel from second person, makes it less like wish-fulfillment and more like the PC has an actual character and thoughts. Which could be good or bad depending on what you want to do.

Past tense could function, but really doesn't make sense in a quest format, where you're updating things live and post by post instead of dumping one whole edited work like a book would
>>
>>463022
It worked for Gullivers Travels and The Odyssey, so I guess if you're narrating from a certain point and keep how things actually are in the present vague to begin with you can interweave the story with the players choices and have them hit off each other. Plus you can provide instant gratification on certain decisions and wrap up plotlines that aren't being followed very easily.

There's a lack of suspense with regards to the main character, but lots of quests have MCs that can't die or won't because the QM doesn't want to end the quest. Everything else is still in flux, like your fortunes or the fate of supporting characters.

The other way that it's helpful is that the MC gets to have emotions and describe their emotions, but in second person it's weird to tell your audience what they're feeling.

This pretty much. An invincible Swordsman who just wants a challenging opponent that doesn't die within a minute - going about fighting extremely savage, god-like creatures like Dragons, Krakens, Eldritch creatures or even entire armies of knights/barbarians/goblins/Minotaurs etc. while dealing with the irritating politics of other fantasy kingdoms that desperately wants him to swear allegiance to them and is prepared to go to any lengths to do it and the many waifus that wants to join his party and be taught in the ways of the sword under him.

>Sword forged in the heart of a barely functioning nuclear power plant that the local tribe regards as a home for the god of death because the radiation makes everyone sick and die

>Main enemy is a robot overlord with eight arms wielding the swords of his slain enemies. He believes humanity should be subservient to robots because they fucked up the world.

>He sends bosses after you Fist of the North Star style until you finally reach his castle.

>Sidekicks include a remorseful assassin robot clinging to the delusion he's really a doctor robot because of his intense understanding of pain and anatomy, a big ugly mutant guy who fights with a giant chainsaw and is a complete bro who fought he MC due to a misunderstanding, and

>Twist is that robot overlord is not final boss. There is an army coming from the East. An army that wants to unite the world into a giant agrarian feudal empire and destroy all traces of the old world's technology. It uses a cabal of powerful telepaths who lead giant mutant monsters to curbstomp everyone. Also mutant jungle-forest dwelling beast-people They're led by Wolfgirl Not-Nausicaa

Sword of the Atom.

I wouldn't have the same resonance. And I'm already doing a dedicated monstergirl quest.

Machine Tyrant can be recruited if you spare him. Spoiler isn't, but you don't have to kill her. Depending on how the war plays out you can force her to surrender and sign the first treaty of the apocalypse or take her captive in battle and force her armies to surrender for her return.

>>463471

>>
>>463486
Sibella and associated quests are monster girls if I'm understanding the term right.

Really Mechagirl is as well to be honest. They're just robot monster girls.

And hell, I guess Bio Armor. Not sure how hot one finds a giant snarling jet-tank-beetle but its a monster and its a girl.

Fuck me. I guess I am a degenerate.

>>463491
Well even if you've never read FOTNS you know Ken goes through Shin and then Souther. It's sort of like that. I'm not going to drop any more spoilers.

Sword of the Atom is good pulp anon.
>>
>>463500
Eh, those don't really count.
Robots are considered mechagirls than monstergirls.
I don't really count Bio Armor as monstergirls, the protag seems to transform into a not!Guyver with beetle features, and Guyver isn't a monsterboy.
>>
>>463410
Rather than pussyfooting around ambiguously, I'm going to lay the basis of the quest out.

It'd be the story of a legendary swordsman, recollecting his journey to become 'invincible'. The enemies would be quirky, but hopefully not ridiculous - think Fist of the North Star or Trigun.

In terms of tone, it'd be edgy like an 80s/90s anime. The setting would be an Eastern Chinese/Turkic fusion of an empire, with deserts and bamboo forests and constant wars. The bodycount would be high, and mercenaries and wandering swordsmen would be commonplace.

So would anyone read this?

Should you make the main character already an invincible swordsman or someone who finds or is chosen to wield the sword and has to learn how to use it?
>>
>>463570
Vague spoilers: Somewhere inbetween.
>>
>>463570
I'd go all out and make the nuclear power plant the sword is kept in a legendary hero's tomb. Priests attend it clad in "holy robes". The old corpse glows with radiation and it holds the sword to its chest.

Think of it like how you get to go to Loto's tomb in the first Dragon Warrior and look for his gear.
>>

I'm also going to assume that the idea will be altered so that the twist isn't already spoiled.

we're a little bit lacking in that due to new players/QMs out of their depth with combat, or opting to go with simple combat and focusing efforts elsewhere.

That exalted quest
Dem armored core
Also beacon hunter

If you want details/caveats, you'll have to wait for me to get back home

Thanks amigo. Exalted quests tend to get pretty magical realm-y which isn't my favorite but I'll take a look at least.

Just to be clear, Armored Core is mecha while Beacon Hunter is sci-fi, though Beacon Hunter at least looks like it's gonna have interesting worldbuilding

I guess since Soma is running ASoIaF fanfic and going on vacation you can rule that out anyways.
I'm not sure there are any non-fanfic/anime fantasy quests with interesting combat and significant worldbuilding currently running. HMQ is questionably hiatus'd, too.

From what I can think of in closeness to what you've said would be the following.
Samsara by Exabutt: Not a lot of combat but lots of character interaction and player input, demands a good amount of creativity from the players. Pretty easy read too. I recommend it with a grain of salt since I'm biased to liking Exabutt's work. I would cite the quest's upfront worldbuilding as an example of how to smoothly introduce a setting, I have not seen any other non-fanfic quest on this board introduce things so cleanly and quickly. It's write-in heavy so expect to lurk unless you have opinions. Update times are phenomenal but it’s Exabutt so it’s par for the course. Heavily recommended.

Totemist by Diarca on /tg/: Is on hiatus but the archives are a good read. It uses some anime character images but I think it's far enough from anime styled to suit you. Worldbuilding is way up there and the mechanics are more adaptable than my brain can handle. My opinion is it has an above average amount of tactical combat and an endless list of diplomacy tasks to negotiate with land spirits/foreign powers. It’s solid AF in everything but running consistency. Heavily recommended for archive diving.

Northern Beasts by Moloch: It's fantasy with some industrial elements and magic. It's got combat but most of the focus is on interaction and planning, and that's how the hunts work. There's some spiritual stuff happening but I think its good enough not to spoil. The worldbuilding is solid by quest standards talking out my ass, but no seriously it's pretty solid. I would say we’ve only scratched the surface of Moloch’s iceberg and The combat is what I'd call "soft tactical," but there's been some special good moments. Recommended if you like dialogue and character interaction. Moloch’s dialogue is tight, and has probably the most crisp MC internalization on the board to date.

Dark Spirit by Oscuro: Mechanics are wrapped in plot and I'm mostly sure they've got depth with the QMs slow introduction of small parts. Quest starts off running but meanders until Oscuro changes stuff at about thread five. Combat is tactical in a sense of spirits tricking spirits or running away but interaction looks more important than winning fights. Its worldbuilding feels thorough and sometimes overbearing, high magic and harsh characters/history but I can't tell if its dark fantasy or just fantasy with dark history. Players stupidly released a spirit that will kill them in a week so I'm not sure if I should recommend it. Characters are heavy varied tho and It’s way above average in the quest writing department.

Beacon hunter by Lusnoc: This is introduced in action, and pretty fucking good in my humble senpai.
First of all Lusnoc likes statwalls. What’s a statwall? This:
>Roll For Me: 3d10+18(Espionage: +2 Adept & +3 Expert Manipulation, Focus: +2 Adept & +3 Expert Perception/Mind, +2 Navigator, +2 Perception/Mind Focus, +4 Familiarity: Mind Reading)
vs DC 27(Base DC 15 Minor Manipulation, Scouting: +2 Adept & +2 Adept Detection, +2 Familiarity: Guard Duty, Espionage: +0 Novice & -2 Undisciplined Resiliance, +4 circumstance(warned), +4 circumstance(gun pointed at you))
That’s a statwall. Get used to it. The setting is clearly well thought out and has a shit ton of small parts that pleases my autism, reading through Lusnoc’s galaxy descriptor was thorough. Writing is as far as quests go pretty gud. It’s got a lot of tell-not-show and “You X Action,” but it’s fine. Internalization is good at times but gets inconsistent at parts. As for tactics we’ve not seen much yet, less than five action scenes have gone down and the quest’s first thread is still up. Despite the statwalls this is my recent favorite. I recommend it for worldbuilding and a good pace, and combat written well enough to quest standards. ayy my ass loves talking

>>464677
I'll wait for this, haven't read armored core or the new exalted quest.

>>464666
I included hiatus quests here so maybe I should mention Deniable Assets for pure tactical operatiage. Operage? Operationism? You get the point.
http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive.html?tags=Deniable%20Assets%20Quest
Best combat/tactical system I've ever seen in a quest period, and FallGuy wrote it well. The quest is half character interaction half combat but dies once it becomes 4/5ths character interaction and 1/5th combat. The quest is what I’d call “hard tactical,” to give context to an earlier asstalking.

Okay.

>Tales of Creation - An Exalted Quest
It's exalted, so you got your fantasy. It's exalted, so everything's high powered. More to the point, the QM has experience and knows how to lay down the details. Crunch-wise will be a rocky start, because Sparks is experimenting with much more direct ports of TTRPG mechanics.

>Beacon Hunter Quest
Sci-fi that starts teetering over to plain magic, or at least Qi/Spiritual Stuff/whatever. QM's good at laying down the background while actual events are taking place. Haven't read up to the most recent, but combat gets a little bit redundant in description. We'll see how it really starts rolling after the extended char gen.

oh yeah, stat dumps. Lots of them.

>Armored Core: Broken Wing
I know this isn't really Fantasy, but I brought it up because of Combat. QM brought a promising setup to the table, although perhaps not so well introduced. There's honestly not much to read at all yet, but here's hoping.

In between my tossing and turning and fevered sleep I have become even madder.

Based on the Man O War Comic - You are a warrior, born of the (TBD) people. The Romans seek to enslave and destroy your people. While you fight to protect your homes and families something even worse lurks... (Sci-fi, Medieval, Ayys, Barbarians, adventure, Ultimate Armors)

Name TBD - You are a simple miner. Day in and day out you spend time on a mining colony located on an asteroid/planet in the XYZ whatever the fuck sector planet. It's a simple life. Wake up mine, go on break, mine, break again, mine, sleep. Rinse and repeat. The money is good although the life is tedious. But you soon find out that not everything lasts when the sky breaks in half... (Sci-Fi, War, Soldier)

Warden - Monster attacks plague your village/town/city. Yet no one seems to care. The victims are treated as if their wounds and ailments are natural. The destroyed buildings and ransacked farms are the results of natural disasters. But you know the truth. You've seen the monsters lurking and skulking around... You've had enough. (Fantasy, Medieval, Magic, Monsters, Shitty version of totemist)

You are warrior, scholar, outlaw, bandit, fugitive, hero, liberator, pretender. There are many titles people would give you, but there is only one who has any meaning to you... Prince. (Mercenary, High?Low? Fantasy, Medieval, management?)

Subject 456 - Based on a shitty writeup I did in a random test thread on Qst. Don't have a synopsis beyond it's sci-fi and vampires

Dragonborn - Elder Scrolls quest. Oh shit nigga you's the dova

JOKER QUEST VOLUME 1 (1-11) REVIEW

THE CAPSULE

We play as a guy with no personality who fights other guys with no personality and has a stocking fetish waifu with an annoying personality. The lore and plot of the world exist solely to facilitate fights between no personality MC and no personality enemies. The fights, which is the main draw of the quest behind devil girls in stockings and cringe, are told in long exhausting paragraphs that if you squint at actually bleed purple ink.

I am told it gets better.

And perhaps it will. All stories have a last page after all.

FIRST THREAD PROBLEMS

I am told this quest borrows from something called "Accel World" but I'm too scared to see how much it borrows. I've learned long ago to avoid anything Japanese that checks the boxes "virtual reality" and "ritualized deathmatch tournament".

Is the Japanese preoccupation with virtual reality and ritualized deathmatch tournaments a commentary on the increasing social isolation in their country and how the hyper competitive job market literally kills young people fresh out of high school by rocketing up the suicide rate to world class?

Is Joker Quest secretly brilliant? Is it a commentary on the belligerent nature of 4chan and how Anons will fight for the sake of fighting without caring about wider context or the character of themselves or others?

I'm sorry. It's the useless anthropology/sociology classes speaking. I'll behave from now on.

So we open up fighting a dragon named Baphomet and its sad that Eliphas Levi's update of the gnostic Abraxas is reduced to level one cannon fodder. We fight it under a sky the color of raw meat in a deserted city and its METAL and COOL and if you like that Northern Lights Flash video or the trailer to Kingdom Hearts 2 I'm sure it made you lose your shit.

I thought it was cool.

For three posts.

We do a quick character gen which makes us a gunfighter character.

Has there ever been a quest where Anons pick the sword over the gun? Even in my Sibella Quest the anons picked gun.

Oh well. It's fine. I'm sure we'll fight enemies that take advantage of our CQC blindspot. Maybe some enemies that rush us down. Or enemies that snipe us from a distance outside our range and won't try to shank us with a fucking knife when they dominate over us in range so we can get an easy victory (DEATH CALIBRE cough cough DEATH CALIBRE)

Naw its a power fantasy quest. We rape everyone we fight because we are Joker and we are the unique card in the deck. Yes, even more unique and special then our first opponent that shoots hell cherubs. The best they ever do is inflict a no heal status aliment on us that our magical waifu cures with a plot device that also makes us even more special unique and bad ass.

We're also a Japanese high school kid in case that wasn't already obvious. I think the first post after the high school review shares my view:

>"Hey, Anon-kun!"
>school uniform

>Oh this is pretty cool

>SUDDENLY! "Anon-kun~"
>This is Chinese Cartoons!

There are warning signs in the first thread.

PURPLE RAIN

Joker Quest tends to describe things in a pseudo stream of conscious style that screams first draft no edit. And that's fine. Quests are improv. First drafts are fine.

But there are limits.

Take this for instance:

"As a baleful yellow light winks to life within the smoke. A humming ray of heat sweeps across the cracked ground, leaving a scorched crescent to your right - The enemy is firing blind, an oddly hunched shape resolving into view, at the heart of the impact zone."

A little purple, but in comparison to other lines its subdued. But the structure is off.The reader's attention is yanked around to too many elements. It doesn't flow.

"A baleful yellow light winks to life in the smoke before sweeping across the cracked ground in a humming ray of heat. It vanishes and leaves a crescent burned in the ground a few feet from you. Only now do you feel the heat on your armor. Through the clearing smoke you see an odd hunched shape. The enemy is firing blindly..."

You get a clear sequence of events in the second. Beam charges, beam fires, beam misses, we see the bad guy through the smoke. But what is more important is that it involves the character and their senses and feelings in the action. You get a sense of dangerous near miss in the second and a sense that Joker has an "a-ha" moment at the end and realizes an opening to attack.

And if its not creating a fragmented, detached picture of the action its saying too much nothing in too many words:

"You can hear the steady hum of the generator at the very core of your being, a reassuring contra tempo: You turn in a single sweeping motion, both arms raised, gatlings blasting. Not solid rounds, this time - Cohered projectiles of fiercely seething plasma, the nuclear flame scorching your mark into the side of the mirrored building."

And that's all one single sentence.

Joker Quest's writing needs to be less purple, fragmented, and it needs to involve the character far more in it. Far too often it reads like some sort of an over-embellished battle report. We shoot the giga-laser and it shines like a galaxy of scintillating stars in ball gowns.

Maybe Joker Quest really wants the writing to be exciting over informative. Maybe he/she wants the prose to crackle with immediate energy and summon up a sense of overwhelming awe at what we see?

Such writing is an acquired taste, but if that is the route we're taking it then it needs to be like pic related. It needs to be like Jack Kirby, quick, punchy, and not bloated with adjectives and adverbs. It needs to be bold and declarative over meandering and frilly.

I've been told that Joker Quest's QM is ESL and that they get better. That's fine. But for these threads the writing was excruciatingly bad.
>>
>>465333
>Naw its a power fantasy quest.
Hahaha

Yeah not for long.
>>
>>465374
I always withstood the earlier joker threads by processing it like bad poetry.

BALEFUL YELLOW LIGHT
winks to life within smoke

humming rays of heat
scorch crescents by your feet
through your armor feel the HEAT

resolving into sight
in time from clearing smog
behind the rays of light

enemy hunched
firing blind

>YOU HAVE CONTROL

But all that's beside the point. Who/what's up next for your chopper?
>>
>>465333

The big, big spoiler to Joker Quest is that there are three Jokers, not one.

I'm convinced that's a homage to Kamen Rider Blade.

Not solid rounds, this time - Cohered projectiles of fiercely seething plasma, the nuclear flame scorching your mark into the side of the mirrored building."

What the hell is a reassuring contra tempo at the core of our being? No serious, what are we supposed to picture in our mind? Is Joker worried his inner working are damaged after the fight and is glad to hear them working? Is it a "I hear my heartbeat in the silence and know I am the winner" thing?

Just drop the line.

"You turn and punch both arms forward. Your gatlings scorch your mark on the side of the building. It smiles at you and you smile back."

What's important is that we blow our mark on the side of the building and what it means to us. Not that we have a reassuring contra tempo at the core of our being, not that we pirouette or what ever before firing, and not that we use nuclear flame.

The act and the feeling are what you have to capture in writing. Good writing is just doing it again and again and again.

WHO WANTS TO READ FOREVER?

Now, I say that there's no world building or meaningful character development someone is going to say "it's only the first ten threads. You don't expect a glut of exposition at the start of a story do you?"

Do you remember Highlander? I like Highlander. Highlander has been compared to Joker Quest. Highlander opens like Joker Quest and immediately thrusts the audience into something strange and weird to catch their attention.

Joker starts with a red robot man fighting a dragon. Highlander starts with two modern guys having a sword duel in a parking lot until one of them gets their head chopped off and electricity goes everywhere.

Except in Highlander you have flashbacks to Connor with Ramirez and they explain immortals and the prize and the gathering and everything. Now, we aren't told where the immortals came from or anything superfluous like that, and I'm not asking for Joker's DEEPEST LORE to do anything superfluous as that in turn. But Highlander told us what we needed. Here is why Connor fights. Here are the "rules" of being an immortal. Here is a big bald man that killed his waifu and best friend.

Joker doesn't give you that. We murderfuck a guy, go to high school like its no big deal, then murderfuck another guy.

Why are people fighting to kill one another and level up in a world populated by giant monsters?

Why don't they team up and gang rape Joker if he's so OP?

Why don't they try to kill him in the mundane world, like through a bomb or something?

Why has no one leaked stuff to the media and world at large so scientists can study the weirdness and find some way to stop these people from murdering one another?

I'm sure someone will say that it all gets explained. I just have to hang in there and keep my chin up.

Lost said everything would be explained if you kept watching.

Lost lied.

But say it does get explained. Say it gets explained well even. Lets return to the Highlander example.

Imagine if the Ramirez flashbacks happened after Connor fought four more guys?

It wouldn't be such a good movie then, would it?

You know the humming sound of a generator? That. I'm also pretty sure it has been described many times that the MC is more comfortable in murderhobo form

HIGH SCHOOL!

You know what totally isn't incongruous to a lone warrior fighting a never ending series of death matches in the shadow realm? High school hijinks!

We have best friend guy. We have red head girl with tomboyish tendencies. We have cute awkward librarian girl with glasses.

Joker could have been any age. He could have had any job. He could have had friends a loved ones that know about the death battles and the quest and writing could have explored how they felt about all this and how they talked about this...

And he's a Japanese high school kid with a secret. He's another Japanese high school kid with a secret.

And best friend guy is probably a "player" as well. Either that or one of the girls. One of our friends has to be super powered as well, its like a rule.

We check out a convenient plot device book that probably has all the lore in it. We don't read it yet. I'm waiting until we do. We also ask the librarian girl out for coffee.

We quickly forget about her when stockings demon shows up. Because Joker Quest has a horrible fanbase. Almost GOT Quest level bad.

We keep a butterfly knife in a box under our bed for protection, which gives me hope that maybe the "attacked in the mundane reality" angle will come up in the quest.

We fight a forgettable wolf-musician themed guy. We shoot at his speakers and then shoot at him. Pew Pew.

DEATH CALIBRE

Death Calibre is our third opponent and he looks like he'll be interesting to fight. He's a sniper. We watch him kill Blue Cobalt (also the name of a Cape World character I helped write the lore on. Is is synchronicity that a character I helped developed dies horribly in this quest?) by never once revealing himself to fight like a man.

Remember this. This is important.

He's talked up to be this total badass. And while we watch him we meet Hecate, pic related, full on otaku catnip.

She's described as being out of place among the normal armored warrior looking players. And yeah, she is.

We start chatting her up. Because of course we do.

You know, I'm fine with anti-hero protagonists. But this feels less like a conscious decision to play a character that thinks with his dick and more the players thinking with their dick.

Death Calibre dies like a bitch. He does the thing where he gets attacked and oh no its just his clothes!

He attacks us with a punch dagger until we blow him away with our guns.

Compare how he fought Blue Cobalt. Now compare how he fought us.

The sniper came at us in hand to hand with a knife. That's DSP levels of bad tactical planning.

It smacks of the QM not knowing how we're supposed to beat this guy so he has him job. It's not like he was putting us in the red in terms of health though. He only got us down to 65 percent.

Oh well.

He has a plot device pistol that belongs to the BLACK JOKER. It's one of those cursed weapon things and when it hits us it prevents us from healing ourselves.
>>
>>465543
The health effect is probably why the QM didn't want Death Calibre leaving us with less than half HP. Although he should have by all rights left us near dead considering his rep and counter to our strategy of "fucking shoot it until we unlock the bigger gun then shoot that at them".

Don't worry. Hecate know a top secret base filled with robots and a plot device machine that can take away our debuff and make us more powerful.

And she's willing to blow that on us because she wants our dick.

I fucking hate Hecate. I'm told she dies. Good. I hope she died screaming. She exists as nothing but instant player gratification. She exists to be flirty and cute and wear stockings. She exists to give us the plot device and to have a magic device that can open doors to everywhere and a secret base that are by extension our things as well. She's absolute garbage in a fight because we don't want a character to detract from our cool badassness.

She is pure gratification without any real work at getting that gratification. We say hi and she immediately jumps on our dick and gives us to the keys to the secret base and upgrade chamber.

Now, in more capable hands she could be interesting. She can't fight but she can teleport away form a fight and she knows secrets. She could have been like an information broker or a spy and when she cozied up to us we wouldn't be sure if it was because she wants a protector in case her schemes go south or if she really likes us.

That's called "character development". Instead she's less character and more upgrade pack.

I think what the character is and what she means can be summed up by the infamous SUCH DEFIANCE scene that happens at the end of the Armory Guardian fight.

That was written in earnest.

That was used by the QM in earnest.

It was gushed over by the players in earnest.

And that is what Hecate is. Something that will always gratify the player no matter how stupid he is.

WHAT WE KNOW WE DON'T KNOW

Hecate is also a source of information...very little information. We learn that there is an end goal of the game...what it is and why people want it enough to kill for it and why its a prize in a tournament and not something -there- for the taking and who keeps this prize when its not being fought over isn't given, but we do know that there is an end game.

We also learn that we are not the first Red Joker. The previous Red Joker saved our life and in return we mercy killed him and became the Red Joker. The details of this encounter are vague. It involved burying him in a giant crater.

This is frustratingly bad backstory development. And its made all the more frustrating because in character we know more than we do outside of character.

Joker-kun seems to KNOW what happened. He knows the rules and history of the game.

The anons don't however. The anons know every little. And its hard to play a character who has a story you don't know, who has a personality informed by decisions you don't know.
-cont
>>
>>465615
>And its hard to play a character who has a story you don't know, who has a personality informed by decisions you don't know.
So what I'm getting from this is that if I ever run a quest I better either make a novel length pastebin filled with all the information the MC would know or go for amnesia?

Got it!
>>
>>465615
>>465630
I liked how Aspiring Emperor handled this sort of thing, a character knowing more than the players. Pastebin references supported by history drops throughout the first threads. Talon felt established within a small window of quest space and his character-to-world context was thorough.
>>
>>465615
If he had amnesia it would actually be better. Because then we could form the personality out of his immediate actions. And the players could ask other characters about the world and backstory and such and be informed about it this way.

But we have a character who knows things we don't know. That can only end in awkwardness and disaster.

Anons should generally know everything the person they're playing knows.

VERDICT

I give volume 1 a HARD NO RECOMMENDATION. It's poorly written. The characters are poor. The backstory is poor. The fights are poor. Everything just sucks.

Velo, on the off chance you're reading this I want you to know that you are not the worst QM. You are not.

I'm starting to wonder if there isn't an inverse correlation between quality and popularity, or maybe something like a threshold where super popular quests just suck?

Northern Beasts absolutely destroys Joker. It just destroys it. But it has a lower rating on sup tg and doesn't get talked up like Joker Quest.

Something is wrong here.

Maybe it does get better? I sure hope it does.

>>465630
No man no. Look back to the Highlander example. You don't need to top load exposition but by the hour mark or the tenth thread we should have a good understanding of what the character knows.

Think a Spider-Man quest where you find out about Uncle Ben and Aunt May and the Daily Bugle ten threads in except they're referred to obliquely and without detail or color. "Guy who inspired me, woman I must protect, place where I work".
>>
>>465630
No, in the first several posts you deliver a brief introduction of the MC and give the players a general idea of what he/she might/should know, and then you bring up pieces information about the world when they become potentially relevant. Inserting memories of the MC's life and things overheard/generally known en passant is also usually a good idea to paint your world more vividly and bring it to life. Do so gradually.

This, however, requires you to be a decent writer, at least a somewhat decent worldbuilder, and have an approximate plan and "feel" for when it's best to drop new information on the players.

>>
>>465671
Yeah, you've said it better than me. Gradual world building is best. You don't top load the exposition and you don't leave people hanging ten threads in. They start with a good general idea what's going on and then you build from there.

>>465675
I'm going to try. I'm curious to see how many threads in it'll be before I recommend it.

>I'm starting to wonder if there isn't an inverse correlation between quality and popularity, or maybe something like a threshold where super popular quests just suck?

Not quite. I mean look at Banished, Hellborn, and Homeless Mutant for example. All popular and all pretty good quests.

It's just sometimes pandering and anime will gain popularity just by their nature and the players who play them can excuse weaker writing because they like that stuff. Joker also gained popularity because it was controversial and was talked about a lot on the /qtg/s of the past.

There are other variables as well as there is with everything.

>But it has a lower rating on sup tg and doesn't get talked up like Joker Quest.

First off, suptg upvotes can correlate to quality but mostly its just a number for popularity and if you have enough people that are willing to go upvote in the archive. Some good quest have players that don't care about upvotes and don't bother doing it. Doesn't mean the quest is bad.

Second, Suptg's /qst/ archive activity is naturally smaller than /tg/'s. Right now you can switch between the two and look at the difference in people upvoting. So getting a purple rating on /qst/ is actually pretty good.

Personally, I kind of find the idea of QM rivalry kind of stupid. I was around for that business with Mechanic and Planefag. I actually know Planefag from the few times he comes into the IRC channel, he seems pretty chill and willing to talk /k/ stuff. And his Quest even inspired me to run LGA in the first place. That doesn't mean I like his Quest, I do think it's stupid, it's Michael Bay entertainment I think. But I'm not gonna be up in his face about it because I genuinely don't care either way.

Quests are supposed to be about goofy fun. I'm not really here to write the next big Quest and going into the mindset that you're having fun above writing the best Quest is a healthy one. If you want to write amazing literature, go write a book.

I'm trying to and failing anyway.

Shitty Pitch or whatever:

The Search for F.F: An American Wizard and a Female British Mage, two widely different individuals who should - by the rules of Magi and Society - be at odds with each other, find themselves entangled upon a quest for reasons of their own to find the man known throughout the world of magic as Finnicus Flinch; a man who achieved the impossible - bending the rules of reality with magic. 40 years ago he went missing and no one has yet to find him, although people to this day still witness traces of his reality bending magic throughout the world, suggesting that he's still very much alive. The two magicians brazenly charge into their hunt to find him, following the trail of his magic and the clues left behind in his wake.

(The relationship between The Mage and the Wizard is a volatile version of Sherlock Holmes & Dr. Watson. Passive Aggressive with witty insults, comedy and some Bro-tier/sexually tensed moments.)

I actually really like the Poles too but I do kind of make it my life's mission to make their lives as difficult as possible (as it was in real life).

In this case, it's by throwing a bunch of charge happy into the heaviest tank the Americans deployed during WWII (and also on the complete opposite side of the spectrum from the first Quest where the Poles were put in the Stuart tank).

It's old in terms of interface and control, not the most user-friendly thing ever, requires time to learn, and can sometimes get clunky, but it's the best thing I could find when I was looking for one. And it can ultimately be a very powerful tool if you spend enough time mastering it.

Sometimes we have a downed opponent one blow away from death but instead of asking if we can spare them or interrogate them or asking the character if there's any next of kin we should notify the only course of action is LAUNCH ALL THE MISSILES HE MIGHT HIT US WHILE WE TALK AND TAKE OUR HP DOWN TO 80 PERCENT.

It's something I'll cover in the next review but the power creep in Joker is ridiculous five fights in and we have our guns and other assorted weapons, an overshield from Halo, and some fucking funnels from Gundam.

>MC is a Spartan-II during the Insurrection and have it gradually move into the Human-Covenant War.
>MC is a Commander of one of the Grey Teams, three-man groups of Spartan-II's that went behind enemy lines during the Human-Covenant War. The risk of dying is 98-100% certain, but they became the daggers that burrowed themselves into the Covenants back. Some Teams even became so infamous that Sangheili warriors (Elites) and Unggoy bottom feeders (Grunts) would recognize them and give them names from the stories they've heard from survivors.
>Spartan-III or Spartan-IV operative operating operatively in teams.
>ODST or Covenant quest. Idfk.

All of them in mission styles, where you're presented with several choice missions and you have to pick one of them - Each mission carries different risks and rewards and you can upgrade both your armor, your weapons, shield, and possibly even your companions/team.

So I've been thinking about JRPG mechanics and whether or not they can ever work in quests.

I think instead of random encounters the anons start from a town and roll for excursions out into the wider world. The anons decide where to send the party and how far away from town you go.

Excursions should be decided in quick handful of rolls to decide loot, damage, exp, etc. They're decided in a single "Give me 4D20" or something similar.

In this way the game will be very Civ like.

Then the anons decide what to spend resources on. In addition to weapons and armor and spells they could spend resources on town defenses or even add members to the party.

There would need to be an goal to all this and a clock to put pressure on the anons to prevent people from wanting to "skip to the end". Something like you have to level up and kill the boss before X day or BAD SHIT happens.

The longer you spend grinding the more BAD SHIT happens.

What do you think thread?
>>
>>467643

The options basically boil down to

>Take the bribe and agree to the terms
>Take the bribe and agree to the terms (Lie)

People chose the honest one while saying to trade with them fairly but now people are wanting to either

A) Have a vote to tell just the head elf
B) No vote. Keep it pushing

They've been debating what to do for a minute now And I'm just sitting here like wow

That's a great point. What if it was kept simple where each member of the party contributes certain metrics. One guy gives +2 to attack and another gives +2 to defense.

What I'm saying as you treat the party as a single character and the individual party members as equipment.
>>
>>467719
No, it's not the randomness that's the issue. Even in a civ, "roll X for arbitrary action that is not affected at all by your environment" does not inculcate the sense that where you are or what you're attempting to do matters.

If it costs resources, it should also cost narrative space. For example, you send out a scouting party to harass/thin the bad guy's forces before they hit [LOCATION OF LAST LINE OF DEFENSE].

Go into detail on who you're sending out, and which part of the army they hit. If they were well-suited to take them on in the location it happened, and so on.

Technically loot and combat rolls happen, but maintaining a 4d20 as the "standard" for any action is a mistake. The Narrative Details are the "standard", the 4d20 is the "sometimes, not always". Hell, you can do half of the rolls behind the screen so it's both less gamey feeling and you hide the rolls that players shouldn't know about.

You don't necessarily have to switch POVs to the scouting party if pacing is a problem, but what effects happen to both sides is descriptive first and numerical second. They lost their archers? That's going to be an important element in how you order your forces in the final defense. The attacked troops were abandoned in favor of a forced march to your base? You have much less time than expected to train troops and build stuff and so on.

Stats get a bad rap because the quest becomes about the stats rather than supplemented by stats for quicker understanding.

> Not a souless robot that tiny players ride inside of Men In Black style, while they fight to the death over which cute girl to dedicate their life to within 5 minutes of meeting.

This is an actual plot point that shows up in the story. Because of the setting, it's dealt with in the most breathtakingly mean-spirited way possible by the people involved and by the PC himself.

>>468319
In my Ghoul Quests (I know, I know) the MC is always named Anon, but when they interact across quests they're distinguished by the letter of their quest. S-Anon for Sibella Anon. T-Anon for Tanis Anon.

Although their names are Anon they do have distinct personalities. Sibella Anon is a Catholic super soldier who is cheeky and immature but brave and thoughtful. Phantasma Anon is a grumpy cynic and film noir fan. Winnie Anon is a friendly weeb with a big heart. Elsa Anon is a socially awkward introvert and masked Scooby-Doo villain.

Tanis Anon is Grant Morrison.

>>468356
>Although their names are Anon they do have distinct personalities

Even then, there's just something about it that bothers me and completely takes me out of the story telling of the quest. I can't really put it into words. Like, every time I see the word Anon rather than an actual name it's hard for me to recognize them a character rather than the avatar of the collective anon's desire based upon a majority vote.

If that makes any sense.
>>
>>468337

It happens in two parts. Why is Anon so overpowered? Because the blonde girl, Mio, summoned him to be her protector. She's unconsciously using her powers to charm him and empower him. She gets really upset when he goes off-script. At one point a villain outright says "How does it feel to be some miserable girl's *wet dream*?"

Also, notice how Hecate looks different from the other robot-people? It turns out there's an entire class of Players that are all-female, and all-waifus. They have no combat prowess at all, and rely entirely on manipulating their designated partner. The endpoint of that class gives the girl all the powers, ever, and that's what they're after.

Every Player under their influence except for the two Jokers behaves exactly like a fucktarded anime protagonist, swearing eternal wuv for his waifu after meeting her.

All of them die.

Well I'm not entirely sure either. What I had in mind was seeing you try an upgrade/waifu driven quest with anime elements. But only if you could have fun running it, or maybe an alternate where a similar setting is played for laughs/satire, based on how you write reviews and quests. To be honest I'm not thinking right at this hour, so feel free to ignore what I said if it doesn't pique your interest.

>>468390
And this.
>>
>>468391

Yeah, but it works both ways. There are plenty of those who genuinely love and care for their partners. Mio is also in love with the PC, but he doesn't reciprocate except in that awful /tg/ "We should string her along just in case we need another waifu" way.

The big draw of Joker Quest is the way the PC can just be stunningly callous. Both him and his counterpart are extremely powerful, and this fucks up the world around them. There's this really uncomfortable scene where this stoic girl almost gets fucked by the PC and /tg/ is treating it as a really cute scene, then the girl breaks down and starts weeping because she can't understand why she's being unnaturally influenced like this.
>>
>>468386
>I'm not going to take you to fun jail just because you like something I think sucks
The problem a lot of people have with your opinion is that you've read 11/~150 threads of a quest that spans four years.

Your review is more or less worthless due to how much the quest changes over its run.
Yes, the first section is considerably worse than the rest, but if anyone was seriously considering reading a quest that long in the first place a review that covers such a small amount of the story isn't going to help much.

I do pure wish fulfillment quests (Ghoul Quests). I try to make the world and support cast fleshed out and make the MC flawed and interesting but at the end of the day they're about getting with the waifu.

Dangling the waifu fantasy in front of them just to kick the players in the balls seems like a dick move.

>>468399
I believe its important to know if the first season/chapter/episode whatever sucks or not. The review says right in the beginning its the first ten threads.

If it changes over time that's fine. But those ten threads I specifically reviewed are not fine. Just because the quest gets good later doesn't mean those threads improve any. If someone wants to start reading Joker Quest I think they'd want to know just how bumpy the road starts.

Quantified into a single, succinct, and easily communicable point: Hope aborted, fate embraced. Here lies the Red Joker, Anon is the Tombstone, the world is your coffin, the pallbearers are the ghosts of your pretend friends.
Spoilers for clarity: Shit get dark, yo. That other anons example is just one of many, I don't really have the attention span to go find the rest.
>>
>>468417

It has already gone full End of Eva.

The MC does a lot of shitty, terrible things in Joker Quest. At one point, he sleeps with his would-be partner (She hasn't been introduced yet) in order to manipulate her into giving him more power. This is especially weird because the MC does not have any sexual contact with anyone else in the entire quest. No joke. She dies later protecting him, and the MC tells her the worst thing he could possibly tell her right before she does.

He also tries to parlay Mio's affection for him into accepting an exceptionally awful fate. The primary villain relates the aforementioned infidelity to her, and she snaps with catastrophic consequences.

Then there's the small, mean-spirited things. One of the villains is huge, effectively invulnerable, and full of hatred. The MC makes a deal with the monstrous cenobite who created him in order to find his one weakness. He also goads that villain into murdering his own sister and emotional lynchpin, which makes the villain utterly lose control.

He also flat-out murders his best friend's love interest. This traumatizes that character to the point he just ups and leaves for good. All of this has consequences because the endgame requires assembling a team for a final assault, and the team assembled is lackluster.

> There's a catch right? Like she was mind controlled and we had to shoot her?

No. He kills her to wins the match. He literally cuts her down with a sword in front of her lover. The shitty, selfish part is that the MC has an item that would be the solution to this.

He saves that item for himself, and uses it later.

Basically when a space-waifu does, their linked partner suffers terribly. This item allows you to sever the connection. When the MC's partner dies, he uses it on himself to spare himself the agony that would result.

>>
>>468506

Technically we were fighting him. Yes, it was a battle to the death, but we had an item that was a solution to it. By severing the connection, we could have freed him from her mental influence.

JQOP also acknowledges that the MC is really fucking powerful. He's powerful enough that the underdog in the fight is actually the other guy, who pulls out all the stops to fight him.

The really stupid thing is that HE HAD THE CURE RIGHT THERE. The upgrade the MC gets is not really a very positive upgrade, either, because he ends up all mutated and fucked up.
>>

>gets to become a real girl

>>
>>468515
>HE HAD THE CURE RIGHT THERE
Again, it wasn't as simple as saving him and everything being fine.
Our plan at that point was to betray our space waifu for another, non-space waifu and, as I recall, people wanted to save the item for that.

Even with the way events unfolded we'd probably have been fucked without it.
>>
>>468515

>>
>>468531
That stops being a thing, outside of a few occasions.
>>
>>468531

The MC stops doing that at some point until he starts again later.

The MC's characterization in the latter half of the quest is very, very different. For a start, he's a hundred years old. So is the villain. He's also very good at fighting because he spent most of those years in Wraith: The Oblivion's Underworld. The other characters with the same experience are equally deadly but very rare.
>>
>>468530
>Our plan at that point was to betray our space waifu for another, non-space waifu

The quest actually sounds pretty interesting. There aren't many where you can just play an out and out worm.

My question is when do the anons kind of clue into the fact that they're playing a manipulative dick? I heard some stuff only passed by one vote. Is there always schizophrenic tension over what the character would or wouldn't do?
>>
>>468550
>an out and out worm.
Well, no, it made much more sense in quest. Turns out space waifus don't become real girls for free, they take the souls of everyone in a huge radius to form their new bodies and power their armour. The other girl was half-space waifu and on top of being able to generate her own Essence had been slowly draining it from people around her for her entire life. Thus by giving the armour won at the end of the tournament to her we'd avoid a huge loss of life.

And yes, people were and are entirely aware that Joker's a cunt. A cunt who generally tries to do what he thinks is best, but a cunt nonetheless.
>>
>>468550

> There aren't many where you can just play an out and out worm.

The villains are constantly plotting against each other, too. At one point, all of these master plans just fucking collide with each other and catch fire.

The big spoiler is Hecate was one of the villains, too. You know that plot-device orb she waves around? She betrayed the main villain and stole it, then ran away. She latches onto Joker because she wants his protection.

She helps him get a cure because she wants the robot army in the same chamber as the boss fight. Hecate was complicit in countless atrocities.
>>
>>468515
>HE HAD THE CURE RIGHT THERE
The problem is that he didn't, exactly. Yes, that item could have cut the connection and removed the mental influence, but that would be meaningless because the guy was genuinely in love with his space waifu anyway. In essence, even if the mental connection would be cut, he'd be still in love with her. Also, though we wouldn't have to kill his waifu right before his eyes, the cut connection would also trap her in her own realm, so they'd never meet again.

It was a dick move, but since we planned to use the MacGuffin to save hundreds of lives, it made sense in context (even if the plan ended up going down in flames).

Personally, I like the fact that Joker is making a lot of the same choices the White Joker is, just from a different perspective. You can more-or-less guess what he was doing throughout the whole quest, and all the stuff he did echoes the MC.

Like, he even gets a love interest he was stringing along for no real effect (Megumi) and his own version of the Hollow Sun (the Diadem). Kraken is also his version of Daegal.

No other way to even have any chance of ensuring player dedication.

Not sure if that's what you were asking for, but here's a few:

Heinrich von Baskerville
Solid build, a bit higher than average height. The facial features are quite unexceptional – not ugly but not very handsome either. Hazel eyes, straight nose with wide nostrils, firm chin, ears pressed to the skull. Light-chestnut hair, shoulder-long by the knightly fashion. Age: around twenty by the looks, about the same as a matter of fact.

Grysha Zubodyoriha
Five-foot-one tall in a hat, or rather in her faithful horned helm. The skin colour is olive, the eye colour is turquoise, the hair colour is that of rust. The nose, the chin, and the ears are pointy. All the fat of the muscular body is gathered on the butt and the thighs, the rest of it getting virtually nothing.

Archia DePort
Excellent hourglass figure: ample forms with a slim waist and a flat belly. About as tall as Heinrich when on heels. Her face is one of those that are usually called perfect: big eyes, a fine-moulded nose, ample sensual lips. The irises are of red-amber colour. Very smooth, ash-grey skin. Long and pointy ears. The milky-white hair is usually kept in a complicated hairdo. Never appears in the same attire twice, but one detail always stays the same – the whip with a spider on its handle. A human would say she is over twenty but less than thirty years old (in a bright light the age would approach the upper border).

Marishka
Short (but not so much as to awoke a complex), athletic build, but elegant and agile at that. Mother-cat gifted her with some feminine decorations as well – nothing extraordinary, but noone would dare call the cat a board. The muzzle will seem attractive to you if you are ready to bear with the arrogant smile that seems to have found a permanent residence on it. The hair, the ears, and the tail are of bronze-ginger colour. The skin is tanned and without freckles, which rarely happens with gingers. The teeth are small and sharp. Dresses in whatever, but usually covers herself with knives and pouches for when on a job, following the motto 'never too many'. Age: about eighteen by the looks.
>>
>>469367

>Aella
Her figure... Ehm, the wings, the clawed feet, and the feathered tail hardly allow to judge her build in common measurements. But she does have a fine chest, nothing wrong with it, so Avalon actually has bird milk. The colour of feathers is grey, in sync with her native mountains. The hair is short, permanently dishevelled, the same colour as the feathers. The eyes are big, round, yellow. The nose, which cannot be called small either, reminds of an eagle's beak. The mouth is nicely trained to chatter nonstop. On the places uncovered by feathers (the face and the body), the skin is of normal bodily colour. On the arms' crooks are almost human hands with claws. Age: about eighteen by the looks.

>Lacy/Alice
Knee-high to a grass-hopper, childish figure. The light swellings on the chest would hardly attract anyone's gaze, but the buttocks have already taken quite appetising forms. Daemonic traits: twisted screw horns, unretractable claws, pointy ears, dragon-like wings, a long agile tail with an arrow on its end. The wings and the tail are of terracotta colour. The skin is thin, quite pale, but not as much as a vampire's. When Alice is in charge, the face breathes with childish innocence and beauty. Lacy's face is beautiful too, but you will not find even a hint of innocence on it. Seeing such a slyly-sneering expression on a human girl's face, any priest would immediately commence an exorcism. Alice's eyes are blue, Lacy's are red, both of them have vertical pupils. The hair is light, wheatish, so long when let loose, it covers her buttocks. The sisters have different tastes in clothes: Alice likes cute dresses of soft colours with bows and ribbons, Lacy prefers the gothic lolita style of dark or red tones. Age: about eleven by the looks.
>>
>>469372

>Oreya
Proper, strong, dry build, rounded torso, long and straight croup with a highly placed tail. Thin legs with firm fetlocks. The human part is muscular, the chest is ample. The face has a clear eastern flavour to it: prominent cheekbones, almond-shaped eyes. Bay horse part, swarthy skin, dark-hazel eyes, dark hair. Wears a deel robe, puts a kuyak-armor on it. The horse part is traditionally left uncovered. Age: seventeen years old.

>Echidna
A half-woman half-snake with an ageless face and yellow eyes one drowns in like in the swamps of the Marsh. Slightly bluish skin on human parts, green hair, a couple of snakes growing out of the head, and a green tail. Has a weakness for golden jewellery.

>Morgause de la Fay
The body of a teenager, but of a very beautiful one. A statuette of a young goddess carved out of ivory by the hands of a great master – as expressed himself a certain minstrel who was lucky enough to see the princess unclothed. The comparison to Ivory was not at random – Morgause's skin is absolutely white. The hair, speaking in the same minstrel's words, is of the colour of gold mined from burial grounds under the moonlight. The eyes are emerald-green, deeper than the whirlpools of Anduin. Wears loosely cut clothes of mainly violet and purple colours. Age: thirteen forever.

>Valgard
Quite tall by human measures but thought to be short among trolls. With a certain tendency for corpulence, he possesses a powerful musculature, broad shoulders, long arms. His appearance is intimidating: low eyebrows, prominent lower jaw, broken nose, right eye covered with an eyepatch, fangs sticking out from behind the lower lip. The ears are pointy. The thick skin is of unhealthy greyish-green tone usually acquired by trolls who spend a lot of time under the sun. The thick, stiff hair of a dark grey, almost black colour are bowed into a knot on the back of his head in a military manner. Usually wears leather pants and a sleeveless jacket, putting on a chainmail when needed. The age is hard to determine, but Val is a bit over thirty by human standards.

Sometimes. But I can't remember sticking with a quest that has only mild consequences, and super consequences only lose players that didn't matter to begin with while the ones who care stay and "discuss" shit.

Sure, hot opinionated assholes can be ignored, but they bring a special liveliness to questing and buffer thread activity. Consider the two bitchboi's shitposting image macros at each other right now. They're making this thread look more active than more than 3/4ths of the quests on the board.

After all nothing is a surer sign of a quest's inevitable death than a lack of shitstorms, and controversy is the best way to get lurkers out of hiding. And so
CONSEQUENCES

Of course most QMs who've gone into questing with a focus on only that idea will fail, because consequences are just one part. Still takes a good QM to make them meaningful.

Or worse, a quest where every consequence results in a power boost.

Which is only acceptable if:
A) You gain strength by losing something else - for example, your humanity or the lives of your friends, or friendship itself and there's a bad end on the horizon getting worse all the time

B) You gain strength after doing serious soul searching and realizing how to learn from your own mistakes

C) The player character doesn't suffer too much but everything else gets worse and the quest gets harder

No, I asked him to not continue with his review when it was obvious that he was making preemptive judgement calls and it became obvious that his reviews were subjective and HGQ doesn't fit his "tastes". Now, I'm not claiming either or when it comes to Cosmic reviews. Some people enjoy them, others don't. I didn't think his review would do the quest justice, given its subjective stance.

Good try though. I'll look forward to seeing your bitching more in future threads~.

>>470142
DLQ has 'interlude time', where downtime stuff like training or research is decided on and then glossed over, interspersed with important scenes like war councils, checking in with friends and family, or Shankbird Day.

Historical quests: They don't need more research than Song of Ice and Fire or Anime quests, but are nearly non-existent. Why?
>>
>>470270

>>
>>470286
Crusader Quest has most of the market. Three Kingdoms exists as well.

It's important, I think, not to skip or cut too much, or it'll feel like the PC's just going from problem to problem to problem without rest.

>>470286
>They don't need more research than Song of Ice and Fire or Anime quests
They theoretically do more research to get the events, terms, and features of the time period right. Especially if you feature historical characters. And then there's always the fear that some anon's gonna jump down your throat for getting something wrong, especially if it happens to be a more well-known time period.
>>
>>470177
I feel like recuperation, training, and travel time can be used better as a way to establish more about the setting/world through questions and answers or straight up 'show, don't tell'. Maybe that's a minority opinion?

He says, after only reading 4 threads out of 14. You're the kind of reviewer who would only watch 1/3rd of a movie (even less in this case) and then decide to rate the entire movie as shit without finishing it. A shitty one :^) My point stands regarding your subjective reviews nonetheless. Learn to take criticism against your reviews and your ability to review better, as you would advice others to take criticism of their quests better.

>He says after only reading 4 threads of 14

Because the awkward tone shift problem was in those four threads.

A problem in the beginning of the work is a problem at the beginning of the work.

>And then decide to rate the entire movie as shit without finishing it

That would be a point if I actually did that. My Joker Quest review was explicitly about the first ten threads only. And when I say there is a tone problem in your quest I mean there is a tone problem 4 threads in.

If you're writing a book and the first few chapters are shit the work as a whole suffers even if later chapters improve. How a story begins is extremely important.

Dice vs No Dice?
Unpredictable vs Going-as-planned narrative.
>>
>>471350
A someone who uses them alot I have a love for going diceless and doing something narrative focused
>>
>>471350
Going without dice doesn't automatically correlate to everything going as planned.

Sure you CAN, but the choices your players make will take you all over the place even without an additional RNG factor deciding success or failure. At that point it's just a question of whether the QM will try to railroad or not, and that's a problem that you run into regardless of whether dice is used or not.

At most I think dice are just amusing to give players some silly button to interact with... But I personally don't feel there's anything dice can lend to a narrative that simply being a decent QM wouldn't provide in the first place.

Unpredictable failures and successes Vs people experiencing failure or success due to their own choices and actions.

And I suppose an argument COULD be made that the same thing could be done with dice as well, providing random failures and successes on top of deserved failures and successes... But at that point I feel like it's just a matter of personal preference.

And if we're being entirely honest, the most popular dice system in /qst/ is Bo3, which is heavily skewed in favor of success anyway. It's not nearly as random as people would like to think, when the overall success rate is significantly higher than failure.

Bio Armor Quest
550 posts read of the first and only thread as of writing. Mild spoilers ahead.

>Synopsis
You are a Japanese woman who is secretly a giant armored beetle monster that sucks energy out of the environment. Also metaphysical things.

>Camp
A warning to preface: I haven’t watched a single 80’s anime OVA in my life. It took me a few posts and the introduction of the theme music to really drive home what’s going on. Dramatic monologues, awkward sort-of-deep one liners, finishing moves being shouted, it’s got them all, and it uses them proudly.

>Exposition
A bit ridiculous but the “Roll to remember” bit was something I liked. Tying our memories to current events and slowly learning about a hidden world was neat. Shortly after meeting more people in the know, the setting is plainly presented in an interactive infodump, a really long, boring one too. I’m sure there’ll be more interesting reveals in the future, seeing as how it’s only the first thread.

>Characters
Perhaps subjective, but the characters are ridiculous. Twice the main character suddenly turns into a screaming psycho and then back normal at the drop of a hat. It’s not black and white; there are mental states between mildly confused and raving lunatic. Another character takes things way too personally and warms up to you equally as fast. To boot, interactions sometimes feel very contrived.

>Words
The quality of the writing is like a wave. Sometimes it’s interesting, other times subpar. Same thing with grammar, except overall it has improved since the beginning. It’s too hard to gauge anything with its length. A lot of the time the structure is boring and similar, making it glaringly clear that sentences starts with “You” or “Your” far too often. Switch up the subjects, spice it up a little. Though, descriptions are wonderful.

“You spear your horn right down his gullet. He makes a horrible sound as you scatter red tissue and white teeth for miles from the impact.”

Lovely. Despite having exceptional word choice at times, there are moments like “stretchhhhhhhhh,” “you were just a dumb normal,” and also bluntly “normies.” Average citizen, an everyman, or the public are all fine alternatives, by the way.

>Mechanics
Prompts are given through ALL CAPS, ALL THE TIME. Everything offered so far seemed to have a decent enough impact. Options are also incentivized through the modification of stats, which is a nice way of making players do things they may not want to do. Stats are still relevant so I have high hopes.

In combat, the QM rolls a die to give a DC. It’s interesting when in combination with modifiers. No crits. I can’t gauge this too much, though. Despite two extended action sequences, I don’t remember anything spectacular or mindboggling resulting from the rolls, although that can only be expected when using average of 3.

Update time is something only Cosmic knows. Is it going to be a short reply that comes in 10 minutes, or will it be a 3-parter that takes hours to write? Good luck finding that out.

Final Thoughts:
You get exactly what you asked for: some kind of old campy anime with a soundtrack to boot. The humor is pretty much exactly what you’d expect it to be from the QM, and by now the score should be obvious too:

COSMIC GOING HAM/10

There’s a solid backstory, engaging fights, and neat mechanics. Do check it out if you’re interested in this sort of thing. Now, to wrap it up.

“You want to scream but your lungs are filled with fire.”

Thanks for such a positive review. Glad to see BioArmor is getting love.

>A lot of the time the structure is boring and similar

This is something I really wasn't aware of and I'm glad you pointed it out. I really could spice up the sentences. I take "you" out of the box way too often.

>The characters are ridiculous
Yuki is supposed to be a little unstable and bipolar how else am I supposed to explain how she goes from "maybe the world will be better off if I killed everyone and myself" to "Hey come C'Mell lets wrassle!" in seconds? . But I'm going to have to be careful writing her with this element in mind, far more careful than I have been. You're right that a lot of interactions have been very stilted. I think I went too fast with some of the character development out a desire to keep the rebels and the remnants "balanced" by giving us a friend on each side.

>The setting is plainly presented in an interactive infodump, a really long, boring one too.

I wasn't sure how else to go about it though. Would it have been better to have C'Mell spill everything in a few posts without the interaction stuff?

>Also metaphysical things
Literally in all my quests. Even Mechagirl

>Update time is something only Cosmic knows

I am GeneSmith now. Cosmic is my slave name.

It is a flaw that I mostly update sporadically and randomly. I'm trying to find days that I can dedicate to the quest. When I got a good chunk of time I'll post on twitter/discord/general.

Thanks again for reviewing!

Cause people asked me to make a fresh one. It's not like we are starved for thread space man.
