Alone. Exhausted. Stranded.

You had planned a two day hunting trip with your close friend, Frederick. The weather was predicted to be perfect, save for a small chance of rain. However, late afternoon on the second day, you and Frederick looked up at the sky.
The clouds were advancing rapidly, threatening to block out the sun, and a cold breeze cut through your jackets like a sword through butter.

Fog, thunder, freezing rain.
Running, yelling, navigating.

And then you slipped. On the way up a mountain slope, a slick rock pulled your feet out from under you. The last thing you heard was Frederick desperately calling to you before he and the cliff you were on top of, faded into the rain and fog above you. After loud THUD and a splitting pain to your head, there was nothing.

You awake with sunlight shining in your eyes and rainwater dripping on you from the treetops above you.
You start to move to get up, but are immediately floored again by a sharp pain shooting through your head. You try again, more slowly this time, clutching your head with your hand.

As you look around, you see the storm is passed. It looks to be early morning, the sun radiating through the thin, green springtime leaves. You stand at the bottom of a steep, somewhat rocky slope. Your hunting rifle and hat are nowhere around you. however, your backpack is still on. As you remove your hand from your injured head, you notice a small amount of dried blood.

You try to shout out to Frederick, but you only manage a quiet moan. Your throat feels dry and sore. After clearing your throat with minor discomfort, you call out again. This time, your voice is loud enough that you hear a faint echo.
You Listen for a good thirty seconds. You hear a couple of birds chirping quietly and a small animal rustling in the bushes far behind you. You call out again, this time louder. No replies but your own echoing voice.

You take a few steps forwards, looking yourself over for any other injuries besides your splitting headache. Your right arm is covered in scrapes from branches and acorns covering the forest floor. It hurts slightly to move your right shoulder. Your entire body feels a bit stiff. As you take a few more steps, your vision begins to blur and you are hit with a wave of dizziness and another shot of pain to your head. You start to collapse, but you catch yourself on a small tree. There's a sharp pain in your right ankle too.

You steady yourself and start to walk around again, slowly this time. You are at the bottom of the steep, rocky slope. Off to your left, you notice a thick grove of pine trees with minimal underbrush. To your right and to your rear is the vast woods. Mostly Ash, Birch, and Maple trees, with a decent amount of underbrush. You turn around and off in the distance, you see the sun shimmering off the surface of a body of water. Just next to the water on one side, you can see a muddy marsh with some cool looking plants. You make a quick mental map of the area in your head.
Your head throbs with pain.

On your belt, you have a small carabiner with the words "Not for Climbing" etched into the side. You also find you have a folding knife. The blade is about 8 cm long, has serrations on the lower third of the blade, and is reasonably sharp.

You can't remember if you are missing anything. Your head feels very fuzzy and unclear. You had been on a hunting trip, right? You had probably had a rifle somewhere, especially considering the ammo box in your backpack. However, there was no rifle to be seen nearby.

Your head throbs with pain.

You take a seat on the ground, leaning to keep the weight off of your injured ankle. The leaves are still damp from the storm, but you don't care. You pull the first aid kit out of the bag along with the water and a granola bar. You take a sip of the water, letting the cool liquid sooth your aching throat. The granola bar is a bit smushed, however still full of plenty of carbs to get you going. You tear open an alcohol swab and clean up your scratched up arm. It stings, but it will prevent infection. For your head, you pop 2 painkillers, chasing them down with a big gulp of water. They should help your ankle too, but it will still need rest or support. You take off your right boot and wrap your ankle in an elastic bandage for extra support. After you squeeze your foot back into your boot, you stand up slowly.
You notice that you feel much better! You take out the binoculars and sling the strap over your neck.

You take in a deep breath and take another quick swig of water. [6 / 32 oz. left] Taking in your surroundings again, you look up the cliff you had came down. The uppermost ledge of the cliff was high enough above the trees, it would probably make a good vantage point. The cliff face itself was very rocky, with patches of vegetation with a few trees here and there. It was mildly steep and slick with rain. Nothing you could climb with your ankle in the shape it is.
Your rifle. You had planned to do a full search for it, but it caught your eye, hanging by the sling on a small branch about halfway up the cliff. So close, yet so far.

You gather your items and make your way towards the water. All around you, the peaceful noises of the forest seem out of place compared to the hell you had just been through. The painkillers had started kicking in, and now you notice that despite your pain, It is a beautiful spring day. The sunlight shone through the fresh green leaves with a radiant glow.

You reach the lake. It's smaller than you thought. Really more of a pond. But the water is clear, still, and appealing. You can feel your tongue dry out just looking at it. You Want to drink, but you don't know if it's safe.

[Sorry, no illustration here, the stream is taking too long to paint]

You scope out the edges of the pond, looking for any sort of stream or river leading off of it. Along the way, you spot a nice overhanging rock formation that might make a good shelter in the future. The sound of bubbling water gives away the hiding spot of a little stream, rushing over rocks and into a secluded little corner of the lake. It looks clear and fresh.

After filling up your bottle and washing off, you walk back along the shore to the rock outcropping you noticed before. On the way back, you search the ground for kindling and firewood. Most of the wood on the ground is damp from the storm, but you find a few good dry pieces. You place the wood under the small rock overhang, in case of more rain. There are plenty of small rocks to build up a medium sized fire pit. You arrange them into a sturdy ring and put the wood inside.

You open up your backpack to get out your matches, and at that moment, you realize you don't have any matches.

Well shit.

After about ten minutes of striking your knife against random dark rocks, hoping for sparks, you spot a few rocks that look a bit smoother and more lustrous than the others. You pick it up and strike your knife against the smoothest side. A shower of crackling sparks falls from the rock, extinguishing as they hit the ground.
>Fuck yeah
You gather a bundle of mostly dead grass and hold the flint up close to it. You strike the steel again, and sparks fly. It's not very effective... You strike the flint several more times, but to no avail. The grass seems to be too thick, too damp, or both.

You bundle up several of the cotton balls with a couple of the smallest, driest twigs you had found. Upon the first strike of the flint, the sparks hit the cotton and flared up. The small cotton fibers blackened and shriveled, carrying tiny wisps of flame with them. Soon the cotton was completely engulfed in flames, catching the twigs with it. You place the bundle of fire in the center of the fire ring and begin to add sticks of increasing size.

You look at your Nalgene, wishing you had a pot to boil the water. But fuck it. Your dry throat begs for another drink. You begin to unscrew the cap to your water bottle, but your hand jolts up to hold the side of your head as pain shoots through it again.
You try to regain your composure, but you're hit with a wave of dizziness and nausea that forces you to sit and lean back on a rock. Water helps head and stomach aches, right? You reach for the Nalgene and take several gulps of the cool, refreshing water.

Eat another granola bar to see if it at least takes our mind off whatever's fucking with us, boiling water in a plastic bottle leaks all kinds of shit into it, and weakens the fuck out of the bottle. It's more useful to us as a carrier for the water we already have, not a warped, weakened, slightly-toxic plastic tube. We're going to have to take our chances with the water, shitty as that is.
>>
>>447134
Are you so sure? If we get any one of the waterborne diseases without a good way to boil water, we're going to die shitting. Rehydration is key here, and the fact that we wandered into the woods with no pan or cup to boil water and no cellphone is almost fatally dumb.
>>
>>447268
It's a lose-lose situation here. If we boil the thing, we'll get what, two, maybe three uses out of it? And then we'll be totally boned, with no way to even carry water, let alone clean water. I get what you're saying, but it shoots us in the foot here for what I sincerely doubt is supposed to be such a brief quest. I figure as long as we minimize our risks by using clear, flowing water with no obvious contaminants, we're probably not fucked until we can find some kind of container to use besides our Nalgene.

And yeah, I assume our friend had the cup/pot, since doing this without one is impressively stupid.
>>
>>446805

Ok try to find chunk of wood and hollowed it out with knife, so that we can fill it up with water.

And then we heat up the rock and put it on hollowed wood chunk to boil the the water.
>>
>>447293
Either way, we're going to need plenty of clean water
>>
>>447907
We probably shouldn't use straight wood since some of the water will be absorbed into the wood and it will splinter, we should burn out the bowl with some charcoals from our fire.

After almost 30 minutes of searching, you find an ideal piece of wood. It's dead enough that you should be able to cut through it with a sharp rock and a knife, but not rotted to the point where it will fall apart easily.
Another hour goes by preparing the log. You get it down to a good sized cylinder, roughly cut off of the original log.
Your fire has burnt down to almost embers. Perfect for this job. You carefully use your piece of flint as a scoop to pick up some of the glowing red embers and move them to the top of the section of log.
After adding a bit of kindling, you have a nice little burnout fire going. You can leave it be for now, but you should probably add more embers once in a while to keep it burning.

You sit back, proud of your work, and you lazily snack on a granola bar. You feel very tired and the sun is setting. It's a beautiful orange and red sunset, glowing through the trees on the horizon.

You feel very thirsty, but you're hesitant about drinking water you haven't boiled yet.
