Hey I was thinking about running a civ quest this weekend.

I am willing to DM the following teams

A. Orcs
B. Elves
C. Dwarves
D. Humans
E. Demons
F. Vampires
G. Drow
>>
>>427342
> forces players down to the most overplayed civs

No thanks
>>
Vampires in city ruins
A plague wiped out the living population of the city, sparks riots and famine, giving the hidden vampire population the chance to rise up, convert the remaining living beings, and start rebuilding the city into a new civilization.
>>
>>427383
Also, the city is in a cold climate as per the vampire's dislike of sunlight
>>
>>427379
Hey man I just want to host shit I know I can make work, im tired of seeing aborted games because people try to force retarded ideas like skelecopters or demon worshipping slime homucunculi on flying islands
>>
>>427418
Fair, but I still want to do my plains centaurs. :/
>>
>>427429
Id be open to run centaurs actually if you want to vote for that
>>
>>427429
the main issue is special mechanics for some of the more unique races can be very hard to do right, without making them hopelessly weak or insanely op
>>
>>427439
Well! You have my vote for that!
>>
>>427449
Alright cool, lets get a couple more votes in and well do it
>>427383
>>427405
Also really digging this idea
>>
>>427429
I like my idea obvi, but this gets my secondary vote if my idea's unpopular
>>
>>427461
I would say the same to you. If I was going to pick one out of the available options, vampires would me my hope, because I'm still hoping against hope that elf civ anon will come back.
>>
>>427482
>>427461
Well shit I will get this going if I can get a third vote to at least tiebreak
>>
>>427553
If you don't, I'd be down for a coinflip between me and Kindly. Seems fair to me if it seems fair to him.
>>
I don't mind. So long as a game goes I'm fine with whatever race we are.
That being said... Vampire centaurs? (Nah not really)
Although we should wait for a third or fourth person, because I'll be gone in an hour or so and won't be back for at least an hour after that.
>>
>>427342
Vampires
>>
>>427600
>>427383
Alright well thats the tie breaker.

What kind of leader does our vampiric coven have? (Please provide a name, and preferably a short blurb of backstory)

A. Turned Knight
- Combat bonuses
- Equipped with master crafted steel plate armor and a unique weapon of your choice
- Skilled at leading, commanding and training troops

B. Blood Mage
- Master of blood magic
- Skilled at manipulating non-vampire races
- Master of inherent vampiric abilities (telepathy, persuasion, seduction)
- Possesses one rare magic artifact or your choice
- Excels at turning new vampires and can train blood magic to others

C. Arcanist
- Master Enchanter and craftsman
- Comes with special crafting equipment
- Can create high quality equipment if provided resources
- Can train others
- Can absorb the souls of other beings to empower objects and store magical energies

D. Other(Write-in)
>>
>>427643
A. seems the coolest, but C or B seem like much more powerful.

So, other anons, hardmode or easymode?
>>
>>427643
>C. Arcanist
>>
>>427665
I'm not too keen on C, seeing the B seems to have the more useful magics. Yet with the fact that we're gonna be in a city with a lot of abandoned tech, C probably would be of more use.
A knight seems cool, but I don't really see a legion of knights being incredibly useful in urban combat, if that's what we're gonna be seeing.
I'd vote for B just because blood mage sounds cool, but I can see how it may end up being the least interesting choice and could end up in easy mode.
TL;DR: I rank them C first, then B, then A.
>>
>>427643
>Turned Knight
That sounds Badass yo.
Fuck power, that Fluff is The Best
>>
>>427704
Gotta agree. Let's be a Knight.
Maybe there will be some sort of chivalry, Arthurian style magic we can access later to even the playing field a bit.
>>
>>427708
We should have like, A Greatsword that's tinted red, and bleeds when we're about to go into battle.

We'll name it something like Devil Bane
>>
>>427715
I'd support this idea if "Devil's Bane" entailed some form of baneposting
Yeah I'm going with the knight
>>
>>427708
To be clear, I use the civ page as a guideline, in my games, vamps are essentially improved versions of their mortal selves in every way, smarter, faster, stronger and can see in the dark. Even the most base vampires have some access to telepathy and bloodmagic.

Also vampires get more powerful over time, with elder vampires being some of the strongest in the world.

However there are steep downsides, first of all people generally hate and despise vampires, at best most mortals that are not enthralled will distrust and despise you.

Vampires are also weakened by sunlight, and unless completely covered up will suffer from lightheadedness, and nausea, and prolonged exposure to daylight will result in death.

They also must feed every few days to maintain their strength, a few weeks without fresh blood will usually result in their death.

They also must take great care to maintain a large enough "flock" of mortal followers to feed off of, and not let the vampire population grow to large, which means unless there is a massive vampire realm, their numbers will always be low, especially compared to their followers and most of the people they will be fighting
>>
Yeah, and let's have it be Devil Bane, because we genuinely believe we're the good guys.

We aren't.

But we believe that Vampirism is the natural progression of Noble Blood and Chivalry, better than the common man, protecting him in return for food (though that's blood now) and service.
>>
>>427724
>>427715
>>427708
>>427704
Okay so it seems you guys went with the knight, Ill need a name, a blurb of backstory and their unique weapon(im cool with Devil's bane, since its unique you guys could give it a cool enchantment, like it drains your foes lifeforce or something like that, or maybe its an old holy sword, from the knights paladin days that wrecks dark magic and undead)
>>
>>427745
We'll be the ex knight of a once low key prince that was given lands by his father and ended out using the wealth of his lands for self indulgence and fulfilling his own luxuries while all we could do was watch.

It was because of this that he paid no mind when a vampire clan infiltrated the region, then the church, then his very own court. We watched our prince be drained of his life, and we were near drained all the same as we went about slaying the beast ourselves. That beast was the head of The Vampie Coven, and your first feast was on his own flesh.

You've ascended into the closest thing to original sin This Coven has, and in that you're its leader, along with the city it's subtly conquered of so stealthily.

You dawn the Duke's crown that your prince once wore as his own, and still carry the ever bleeding blade that slew the demon that cursed you. It is named Devil's Bane, for the grunts of The Dark Lord shall all fall beneath it.

Don't know a name though.

Maybe we should just be named The Duke.
>>
>>427768
oh so*
you don*
Such spelling mistakes.
I should proof read.
>>
>>427768
Name him Big Guy
>>
>>427768
Maybe we should be named Leoric.

https://youtu.be/bHWGAt4j7iI?list=RDxqUaZFGQYBE
>>
>>427792
Duke Leoric doesn't sound too shabby, I'm okay with this
>>
I gotta go out right now, but I may or may not be back later today. I'll keep checking in because I want this civ to happen. Cheers
>>
>>427792
Duke Leoric sounds cool.
>>
>>427768
I like the backstory too. We overcome our Father's corruption, and that of the beast that slew our kindgom, and we shall bring the kingdom back to the true ways of chivalry!
>>
>>427768
Arlright going with this.

Leoric, now known as the Duke, descended into the crypts below the cathedral, challenged and slew the demonic beast leading the vampire coven that had unleashed the plague upon the city.

Leoric barely defeated the beast, having most of his life drained from him in the fateful battle. But a moment of strength and focused effort allowed him to take the beasts head before collapsing from weakness.....

Leoric awoke to find himself not quite the man he used to be. Sensing the pulsing life of the world above, and the frantic efforts of the vampire coven and their thralls around him.

Having slain their leader, they have performed a dark ritual and turned you into one of their kind, a twisted reward for slaying the demonic beast.

They now look to you as their leader.

The city above is in chaos, with most of the population dead from the plague, the handful of survivors are either looting the city or hiding in their homes, awaiting the restoration of order and stability.

You find yourself in charge of 50 vampires, mostly young but with a few craftsmen and veteran warriors between them. In addition they are followed by 500 human thralls, several of which are still the city, providing the coven with intelligence reports and infiltrating human society for us.

Whats our next move?

A. Travel back to the city and use your former position to rally the people under your authority
B. Stay put and get a better feel for your new position as coven leader
C. Other(write-in)
>>
>>427954
>A
Talk to some of the Coven as well and see what we can do about this big plague that's going on, it's not quite good for the people we want to feed on and rule.
>>
>>427954
>A. Travel back to the city and use your former position to rally the people under your authority
>>
>>427446
That's called being a shitty writer
>>
>>428059
>>427982
You speak to your new followers and find out that the beast had been casting strange incantations in the sewers beneath the city.
However they believe the plague will end shortly without the beast sustaining the curses on the water supply.

You speak to your coven and gather a few of the more solid looking ones to accompany you into the city.

Upon leaving the cathedral you hear screams coming from the old residential quarter and see clear signs of smoke and fire engulfing several buildings.

In the other direction lies the old government district, including the local armory and military headquarters, where you might be able to find equipment and support.

Whats our next move?

A. Check out the situation in the old quarter
B. Ignore them and proceed to secure the armory
C. Other(write-in)
>>
>>428482
A. We must ride gallantly to the rescue, and protect our people!
>>
>>428507
You and your followers rush towards the fire and screams, and come across a scene that could be out an appocalpyse. A few rough looking men, armed with rudimentary weapons looting and raping, the evidence of their previous victims lying on the street. You count 6 bandits, but between you and your 10 followers, you make short work of them, Devil's Bane drinking its fill on their lifeblood.

You call out and find several terrified families looking for direction.

A. Send them to the cathedral for protection
B. Tell them to stay put
C. Other(write-in)
>>
>>428825
Escort them to the Cathedral. We don't know it's safe, and they could meet other dangers.
>>
>>428856
You and your followers gather the survivors and lead them back to the safety of the cathedral, the survivors number around 100 and will make a good start to bolstering our current numbers of human followers. You and your group then proceed to the government district.

Where to first?

A. Secure the armory, we will need good equipment
B. Head to the military headquarters, there may still be some troops alive that could be recruited to the cause
C. Other(Write-in)
>>
>>428906
B. Head to the military headquarters. We'll see to it the people are safe before worrying about mere steel.
>>
>>428906
is there some way to call civilian survivors to us? If, for example we rang the church bell would people know to come?
>>
>>428942
Oooh! That is a good idea!
>>
>>428920
>>428942
You decide to head to the military headquarters, but before you leave, an idea strikes you. You send one of your men up to the top of the church and have him ring the great bells, allowing people to know for miles around that the their are people active in the cathedral.

With that you have several of your men set up spaces for people to rest. Later you will have to go find food and other supplies to support all these people.

You and a few men head towards the old headquarters and find a few dozen soldiers, the highest ranked being a sergeant who was last ordered to hold position. The small group of men being all thats left with most others deserting or already dead to the plague.

A. Try to persuade him and his men to join you (roll 1d100+10)
B. Leave them be for now
C. Other(write-in)
B.
>>
>>429006
Learn the situation first, ask the Sergeant what's going on.
>>
>>429014
+1
>>
>>429014
>>429060
You ask the sergeant the situation and he tells you that most of the troops, including the generals and the officer staff, deserted when the plague started to kill most of the population, the men with him, all either don't have families or are too far away to find them.

He is the highest ranking man left, with a general telling him to hold position before dying from the plague. That was over a week ago. You sense that the soldiers are restless.

The sergeant reports that they are starting to run low on food stores but they are well rested and ready for anything.

What now?(this is a write-in)
>>
>>429137
Rally them to the cause! Bandits are on the loose, and we have already slain 6, we must restore order!

Send half of them to the cathedral to guard the civilians, and scour the city with the rest.
>>
Rolled 59 + 10 (1d100 + 10)

>>429137
Forgot rolls.
>>
>>429171
>>429201
69 a fair success

Using your local renown as a great knight to help you convince him to follow you, he reluctantly abandons his post to join you, you order him to take half of his men and return to cathedral to assist and protect the survivors while the rest of his men join your party.

Where to next?

A. The Armory
B. The Library
C. The Prison
D. The Ducal Palace

Back at the Cathedral...

Sergeant Kellan and his men arrive to find the Cathedral nearly overflowing with survivors attracted by the ringing of the bell, many of the faithful believing it to be work of the gods that we miracliously stopped the plague and are now saving the survivors with the food from the cathedrals winter food stores(Which are running out by the way)

Sergeant Kellan quickly takes command of the situation, placing men in checkpoints along the roads and moving survivors into nearby buildings, setting the cathedral as our center of operations for the time being.

What should he focus on first

1. Secure a food source, Kellan will lead men to the outskirts of the city to find farms, whether they are being worked or not, we will find a way to produce some food.

2. Fortify the cathedral and the buildings around
it, build watchtowers on some existing structures and build large barricades in the streets to protect our main base.

3. Other(write in)
>>
A.
2.
>>
>>429402
Leoric and his party quickly move to secure the armory,if there are looters at least they wont be well armed looters...

They arrive to find the armory sealed and intact, the massive heavy gate protecting it closed shut. However after a moment you hear movement inside and a voice yells out to you "Who are you? State your business here"

What do we say/do?(this is a write-in answer)
>>
>>429480
>>429402
Also after a few days of hard work, using debris, construction supplies and lumber taken from damaged and burned buildings a series of wooden fortifications and watchtowers are made in the area around the cathedral, every house becoming a small fortress against an invader.
>>
>>429480

"I am Duke Leoric! I have returned to bring order and justice to the city, after slaying a great beast that caused the plague! Who are you to deny the people of the town weapons and arms to defend themselves, when bandits loot and pillage in the city?!" Point at the rising smoke.
>>
>>429491
You pause a moment before responding...

"I am Duke Leoric! I have returned to bring order and justice to the city, after slaying a great beast that caused the plague! Who are you to deny the people of the town weapons and arms to defend themselves, when bandits loot and pillage in the city?!" As you point to the burning city behind you. While the gesture is probably lost on the man behind the door, it makes an impression on your followers.

The guards, out of fear and respect and a small amount of vampire mind control, allow you into the armory to access the weapons.

Leoric quickly gets the group organized, placing weapons and armor on wagons and sending them back to the cathedral while leaving 4 permanent guards, who must always stay on watch, and have orders to seal the gate at the first sign of trouble.

The Duke returns to find the cathedral a well organized base of operations and the local area fortified, the guards quickly acceding to their leaders arrival.

We are running out of food, but our position is very secure, in addition our troops, while few in number are well fed, highly motivated and well equipped.

Whats our first order of business?

A. Securing the government district
B. Taking over farms on the outskirts of the city
C. Securing the market district
D. Secure the city wall in our section
E. Other(write-in)
>>
>>427379
To be honest I have never seen a fantasy Civ play as humans. It's always something like mushroom people or elementals. It's like people always say that those races are the most overused and then they never use them and instead use a more obscure race which is actually the most overused.
>>
>>429575
While the farms are important for long term food, I imagine the markets might have more immediately, we'll march there first.
>>
>>429607
Civ Bulgar's quest.
>>
>>429617
Why not split?
>>
>>429669
I honestly don't expect taking the markets to take very long. I mean, it can't be more than a 30 minute walk if this city isn't the equivalent of Rome.
>>
>>429575
> secure the market district
>>
>>430489
>>429617
You send a group to secure the market district, its once bustling streets now lie empty, with abandoned goods and rotting food simply left out from when the plague struck.

The local guidlhouses seem relatively intact, and quick inspection shows that their vaults are still secured, leaving us with a nice stash of gold and treasure to start with.

The treasure being safe, and the district secure, several of our guards and families move into the nicer houses and secure the area for us.

Whats our next move?

A. Securing the government district
B. Taking over farms on the outskirts of the city
C. Secure the city wall in our section
D. Other(write-in)
>>
>>430731
B. Take the farms, money is meaningless without the lifeblood of civilization, wheat.
>>
>>430787
Leoric leads a group out of the city into the nearby countryside, several farms are found, unfortunately most lay unworked, with the families that once worked them fallen to the plague, the few surviving farmers quickly pledge their allegiance to the Duke however. In addition, there are now many horses running wild outside the city, having wandered off after their masters dying, we should have enough horses to mount most of our people if necessary.

Several families are moved out to the farms to begin harvesting the wheat and barley, before it rots in the sun.

What's our next move?

A. Securing the government district
B. Secure the city wall in our section
C. Other(write-in)
>>
>>430842
Is the government district the only part of the city we haven't swept yet?

I'd say we've claimed a lot of territory these past few days, maybe more than we can easily hold, so I'd less be looking to secure territory than sweep the whole city for survivors to return to our secured areas.

That said, if we're doing fine for people and not spreading ourselves thin, sure secure the walls, make sure we can get our people from the fortified cathedral to the farms quickly, and back as well.
>>
>>430858
I havent given numbers recently but we have a few thousand people now, about a quarter of the original population, and basically we have yet to encounter any trouble aside from the very begining, however I'd say we have enough people to resecure the city itself and the countryside directly adjacent to it, but not much else.

Leoric has a small group of men man the walls, mainly keeping watch, allowing us to quickly reinforce them as necessary.

Several days go by and the farms appear to be coming along nicely, the first crops being brought to the mills in several weeks, the grain being distributed to our people and making them feel hope after enduring almost a month of hell.

One of the sentries on the wall reports what appears to be a caravan on the road, coming towards the city...

What's our next move?

A. Send some men to secure the main city gate and wait for them to arrive
B. Send out a party to meet them
