You still remember your old master, a powerful wizard of the forgotten Empire. 25 years ago, the world suddenly changed, as doom came upon it. The ancient Empire stood strong for 1000 years, but its own hypocrisy and power hunger brought it down. As the 10 most powerful mages tried to cast a spell to destroy all their foes at once, something went horrible wrong. For some reason, you cannot remember a span of about 2 years around the apocalypse, despite the fact machines have a perfect memory. It seems like all information is blocked by some unknown means.

Before the catastrophe, you and your master were investigating some islands in the south. Now, 30 years later, you are still waiting for your master to return, as he is gone but you remain, untouched by time. The thing most worrying to you is that you are unable to remember your last command, as suddenly your failsafe sets in. As you did not get any commands for a set period of time, you are automatically granted your own free will.

well there is something special about this ore, but you simply cannot put your finger on it

while you previously only had swords, one of your workers has the idea that a blade on a long stick would be better in most situations
you now have knowledge of pole weapons, but you cant craft them, as you are missing a forge

you read "the basics of magic"

magic comes from the outer plane, a plane of gods and powerful beings like celestials and demons
every living being can learn to use it, but is difficult if you have no affinity for it and will never be as good as magic cast by somebody with talent
there is a special metal called magit that is used to amplify magic effects and store magic energy
it is identified by its characteristic illumination effect (the ore you found is magit ore)

your master left some notes
he apparently was researching new and advanced constructs, especially those that can use magic and work autonomous, generally a forbidden research topic

he had the theory that if you build a construct completely out of magit he should be able to cast magic, but he was unable to try it out as he never had enough magit
another idea of his was to use magit to alloy an iron construct, but he went missing before he could do it
