Now look where kindness has gotten you. You said your last goodbye to the world as a mortal the instant you made that foolish wish.
“Don’t worry, Genie” you said. “I’ll use my third wish to free you from the lamp.”
And you were true to your word.
As soon as the wish was said the Genie’s plump lips curved into a coy smile.
She descended from the ground, the misty vapours which trailed out from the lamp and formed her lower half shifted and became solid. The beautiful genie touched the ground and stood before you, the shackles on her wrist disappearing as she gave you a thankful kiss on the cheek.
“You’re going to stay with me in the mortal world?” you said.
The Genie sighed, looking at you as if you were a five-year-old who said something cute.
“Oh sweet boy” she said, cupping your face with her soft hands. “There must always be a Genie for the lamp; and now the time has come for a new Genie. Thank you, sweet boy, and may your new Master be as kind as you have been.”
The Genie stepped aside, her clothes shifting to ordinary mortal clothes; reality changing to give her a whole new life in the modern day world; a life she told you was stolen from her many years ago when she had been imprisoned in the lamp. It is only now you discover exactly what needs to happen for a mortal to become imprisoned.
You feel a sharp tug on your feet as they become smoke and vapour trailing into the lamp. The Genie you thought was your friend gives you a sad wave as you are sent hurtling into the nozzle of the lamp, your body shrinking down into it, becoming smoke, engulfing you in darkness…
When you wake you find yourself in a soft padded room. You’ve seen it once before when the previous Genie of the lamp gave you the walking tour of her home. The Genie liked to drape her room in colours of green and purple, with shiny soft cushions and a shag carpet. She didn’t seem to realize as a Genie she was a walking cliché. You didn’t have the heart to tell her though. It gives you a sinking feeling to think that this could very well be your new home for what could be hundreds, if not thousands of years between your trips back to the mortal world to grant wishes; the very fuel source which sustains your Genie existence. A Genie who doesn’t grant wishes, so the previous Genie told you, would fade into non-existence after a week of not granting wishes in ‘Genie-time’ inside the lamp; though time inside the lamp, and time in the mortal world are said to pass differently.
Unfortunately, you have no say as to who your new master will be, or for how long you’ll have to wait. Though the wait for a new Master will not take more than an ‘in-lamp’ week to occur. For now, you’re stuck. Even as you stand in the single room you wonder how many hours, days, and months are passing by for every second you spend alone in here.
