You get Hulk-style angry. You run to the back of the classroom and push his desk over with him in it and scream "SHUT UP" at him.

Your teacher seems startled, and rushes over to you, pulling you away from him. "Harry, what's wrong?"
The kid on the ground is crying, but everyone else seems mildly impressed.

You feel better now, and tell the teacher he was making fun and of you. When you get home that day, your mother asks you what happened, and why you tried to fight a kid.

One of your friends finds a box of firecrackers on the ground. He suggests you put it in his neighbor's mailbox. You refuse, but your other friend decides to do it, and calls you a wimp. He then dares one of you to ignite it with a lighter they later find.

You don't really remember what happened after that, you just remember a loud noise and you all running away.

You get a scolding from your father and get grounded again, nice one.
The next day you come into class and notice Mia has a black eye.

You decide to ask Mia what happened. She explains she doesn't want to talk about it, and you decide to be nice to her as a way of comforting her.

You haven't spoken to your friends much after what happened, and they haven't spoke much to you.

After a few months, Mia invites you to her house. When you walk in, you smell something strange, like that weird fizzy stuff that your mother puts on your wounds when you get injured. You decide to not think much about it.

Later, while you and Mia are playing in the back yard, you hear yelling from her house. You hear glass break and her father screaming, and you ask her what's going on. She says not to worry, it happens a lot.

Throughout the rest of elementary school Mia keeps getting bruises and black eyes, and you're still not sure why. You two have grown pretty close, and you don't have many other friends since what your old ones did.

One night you decide to visit Mia's house.

You tell her you're going to get a glass of water, but instead search the cabinets. You find where the funny smell is from, there's practically a mountain of alcoholic drinks in the refrigerator.

There's a shard of a bottle that falls down when you open the fridge, and Mia's father hears it break.

He comes into the kitchen and sees you looking at his drinks.

He yells at you to go away and you go back to Mia. You're not completely sure what's happening, but it might be related to her father. Mia's mom made cookies for the two of you, and you noticed her mother has similar scars. You feel sympathy for Mia and her family.

It's now the summer and you decide to spend your first night away from school to sneak out while your parents are asleep. While approaching Mia's house, through the window you see her mother get smacked by her father and you hear loud yelling. You try to get a closer look but you're not the sneakiest of kids, and her father notices you staring straight into the window.
The next morning you're awoken by yelling in your house.

Mia's father recognized you and came to your house to "show your authority".

Your father knocks him out in the middle of your living room and calls the police. The police come and arrest Mia's father. Your mother scolds you for sneaking out, but at least you know what happened. You would have loved to ask Mia on a date, but her and her mother were relocated to Halifax by the police.

High school has started, and you're now lonely since your only friend has left you. Your dad encourages you to join the hockey team, and you have many more opportunities in high school now that Mia is gone. Your grades slacked after having to worry about Mia, so you think about studying more.

Your father comes to you and tells you he got a job offer in Toronto. The thought of a big ass city compared to your town is a little frightening, so you're skeptical.
