You decide to continue going forward in the direction of the white bird. You are amazed when you find yourself in a clearing with birds of every kind sitting in the trees around you. You stand and listen to their music for a moment, and then decide to continue on. Before you can leave, though, you hear a noise behind you and whirl around. A large man with wings greets you.

"Who be you, stranger?" he says in an odd voice.

You stammer out an inaudible reply. He glares at you with cold blue eyes.

"Well, I can see that you mean no harm to the creatures of this forest," he says, after studying you intently. "Be warned if you insist on exploring the forest with no name, however. It contains many dangers as well as mysteries."

You stare at him blankly, because you have no idea what he is talking about.

"There are wonderful creatures here who would perhaps follow you home, but you must search to find their hiding places. Only when you have discovered the secrets of the forest will you be able to understand it."

With that, he launches himself into the air with his enormous white wings. You watch as he lands on a branch high above you and a flock of colored birds flies over to land on his head and arms. You decide that it is time that you moved on.

You cross to the other side of the clearing and walk in the forest for a little ways. Up ahead, you see a mountain towering above the rest of the forest. You find yourself on a path that leads directly to the base of the mountain.

You follow the path up the mountain. It winds in a circle around the base of the mountain and is never so steep that you become tired. After awhile, you see another path branching off that seems to wind around the mountain in the other direction. You could also leave the path and find your own way up the mountain.

You go farther up the path. It is getting steeper as the mountain slopes more, but you manage to get a lot father up the side of the mountain. You hear a loud noise in the bushes to your left.

The Mountain
You investigate the bushes, and see an unusual creature walking past. It has a very long tail and two graceful horns. When it sees you the creature pauses and looks at you. You hear a soft voice in your head.

"Are you a friend?"

You nod and the creature looks relieved.

"We are the Herd of the Mountain. We have grown too large for our area, though, and there are those who would journey beyond its borders. If you would like to have a companion on your journey, there are many of us who would come with you."

You ask where the rest of the Herd is, but the creature does not seem to know.

"If you like, I will go with you, for you seem like a good creature. You could also investigate the rest of the mountain and choose another of us to accompany you."

You journey farther up the mountain. Up ahead, you spot a very tall tree that looks like it would be easy to climb. Maybe taking a look around would give you some idea of where you are.

You climb the tree and get as high up into its branches as you can. When you reach the top, you get a breathtaking view of the Forest. It stretches out to the horizon, where you see a line of dark blue that must be the ocean. You can make out a nice little beach bordering the sea. When you have enjoyed the view for awhile, you climb down.

You continue to explore, and walk up the rocky slope of the mountain. After awhile, you are forced to climb over and around some big boulders that block your ascent. You are getting a bit tired. You consider stopping for a rest. On the other hand, the top of the mountain seems to be pretty close.

You sit down on a flat rock and rest for a moment. You cannot see much around you beside more trees. In your head, you hear the soft voice of another one of the creatures who inhabit the mountain.

"Are you a friend? I have heard rumors that there was an outsider here."

You do not see anyone around, but you call out that you are friendly and do not wish to harm anyone.

A delicate black creature jumps through some bushes and lands on the rock next to you.

"Please take me with you. I wish to leave the mountain and explore the Forest. I can show you the way off the mountain."

You agree and the black creature begins to trot away. "Follow me," it says, glancing back at you.

You are very tired, but you continue to climb. The top of the mountain is in view, but you have one more large boulder to climb over. You take a deep breath and keep climbing.

You have reached the top of the mountain at last! You sit down and catch your breath for a moment, then take a look around.

You can see a large lake, and a few smaller ponds scattered throughout the Forest, as well as many little rivers and brooks. What looks like a swamp is off to the east.

The ocean seems to back up to part of the forest, and you see that a sandy beach borders the woods for a long way. You can even make out a tiny dock in a little cove.

Off to the west, you see a large man-made structure, perhaps a castle. You can see that the building has a large wall around it, and a garden. You make a mental note to visit this area at some point.

To the north, and expansive desert stretches out as far as you can see.

After you have looked around at your surroundings for a long time, you try to decide where you should go next. You could climb down the mountain in any direction and try to find some of the landmarks you saw. Which way do you go?
