>Trying this again. Last attempt died due to lack of interest but I think I can have some better luck this time.

Hey guys! Looking to run a nice fun quest loosely based on Greek city states and mythology. Your fledgling city will have to contend with raiders, enemy nations, monstrous beasts and the meddling of gods. Heroes will be born and die, battles won and lost and even Olympus may be pulled down. Its up to you guys.

Rules-
You will start out with 1000 gold in your cities treasury. You can construct Mines, Farms, Ports, Roads, Walls, Barracks, Forges, Markets, Temples, Fortresses, etc. Each building is 400 gold and will function on a Tiny-Small-Basic- Large-Grand-Epic with upgrades starting at 200g and doubling for each level. Each level of construction will improve the bonus that structure confers.

Military units cost 50g to train at the basic level and will gain experience as they fight. You start out with a group of roll determined infantry (basic Hoplite spearmen) and one hero unit along with a monstrous unit unique to your city. Upgrading your barracks will allow you to purchase Elite infantry, cavalry, monstrous units or create unique units. Building your port will allow you to create Triremes and other naval units.

You will receive +50g per turn in taxes. Increasing your population with farms and villages or your trade with markets or a port will increase it proportionally.

Your city requires a patron deity to thrive and your temples will be mainly dedicated to them. Building or refusing to build them will have benefits and consequences from various gods.

Rolls are 1d100 with various modifiers depending on the circumstances.

Lets name our city and pick our patron god/ess/'s

>City dedicated to Ares. Your warriors and weapons are considered above average.

The young city of Sparta resonates with cheers and songs as it is dedicated to Ares. Goats and Oxen are paraded through the streets to the makeshift altar outside the city. Their throats are slit to great fanfare as the festival kicks to new heights. Dancers dance, musicians play, young warriors duel and wrestle to cheering crowds. His scarred arms soaked in blood up to the elbow the High Priest finishes the sacrifice of the doomed animals, casting their bodies into a pyre for the Warrior gods glory. His clear Grey eyes gaze across the city and onto...

>Mountains. Your mines are extra productive when you construct them and you have a bonus to defending your city.

Nestled between two lofty mountains like the nest of some mighty bird is the city of Sparta. Switchbacking trails and narrow roads lead up the cliff face, eventually ending high above the earth in the cool and imperious peaks. Stonemasons and prospective miners both look at the mountains greedily, curious of what treasures may he ripped from their breast.

Even with their sky scraping location the leaders of Sparta know their city will not be without defense. The bravest sons and fathers of Sparta lend their spears and swords to the defense and glory of the city.

Roll me 2d10. Average of first 3 will be your troop counts.

>4- Hoplite Spear Legions- Basic Spear infantry. Decent in a fight but nothing special
>9 Archer Legions- Basic Archer Unit. Good at range when supported by infantry.

Hoplite spearmen with bronze spears, helms and shields march in formation, sparring battles scattered across the training yard as a large number of archers fire at straw stuffed dummies, peppering the targets with shafts. The military might of Sparta is still young, unblooded and untested. They require a vision of perfection to look up to, a great warrior and hero to lead them in battle and astound them with his feats of skill and prowess.

>Hero time.

>Perotricles the Just- A Gleaming giant in bronze armor standing head and shoulders above a tall man. His spear has ended the lives of dozens of enemies. (Spear hero)

>Perotricles the Just. A spear wielding Melee hero who excels in leading from the front and killing enemy heroes or monsters.

Perotricles wipes his brow with a cloth, having just beaten six men into submission with a cloth wrapper wooden spear. The groaning men are collected and brought to the healers, black-purple bruises already forming on their skin. Accepting a wineskin gratefully from a young boy watching the fight with wide eyes he throws the cloth over his shoulder and takes his leave. Walking through the freshly paved streets of Sparta he takes in the scents of cooking meat, baking bread, smoke, incense from the altar.

This freshly settled city will grow strong, aided his Ares-blessed spear and his own natural skills. The might of men is only so strong however, sometimes strength must come from a more... Monstrous source. Rounding a corner he takes in the beasts tamed by the priests to he used in war, a gift from Ares...

>Monstrous unit time.

>Minotaurs- powerful, brutal, dimwitted. Perfect for shattering enemy shields.

>Cyclops- Powerful giants with a staggering capacity for invention. Their hammers craft wonder and death.

I think we should go with Stymphalian birds.

Cyclops are those of Poseidon, harpies are hags, and those of the Minotaurs? An offspring of Minos, surely not blessed by our founding god Ares.

>Unit of Stymphalian Birds gained. A Ranged/Flying unit capable of attacking from the air with impunity against infantry.

Bronze beaked birds sit amongst the rooftops near the altar, pecking and tearing at scraps of flesh. Their cruel hooked beaks shear through flesh and hide, their daggerlike bronze feathers rattle and rustle. As he Perotricles watches one gives a sudden flap and a single feather shoots out, nailing a plump rat to the ground. With a blurring swoop the morsel is snatcher by the bird of Ares, its metallic feathers whistling in the wind.

>-400g

Your townsfolk turn out in droves to begin constructing the first of Spartas farms. Fields are cleared of stones, irrigation ditches dug, long hoarded seed cast upon the fields. Surely within a few weeks their bounty shall be present for the benefit of Spartas people. Though the work is back breaking, its completion heralds the beggining of a small festival. The drinking and singing leads to several couples breaking off for privacy....

>Tiny Farm Built. Pop increase brings income to 55g per turn.

>-100g for expedition

The miners and their hired guards set out into the mountains, donkeys and carts piled high with tools and supplies. It will be several months before they return but surely these men can eke out every ounce of wealth from the mountains.

I speak once more, Ares is testing us. If we cannot protect our citizens then we do not deserve to rule. That, and while the Great shadow still roams, our flocks might not live for it to even matter unless we quell the beasts first.

>roads built through territory. Income increased to 60g per turn.

Your townsfolk begin clearing through the countryside, slashing and burning the tough mountain brush. Small trails are expanded into sturdy and safe roads that lead to the outlying homes and farms nearby. A broad trail leads down to the valley that often sees frequent travel. Surely this will bring in merchants.
>3 Archer Legions.
>1 Unit of Stymphalian birds

Your archers march out of the city, their bows clasped tightly and quivers upon their backs. Above, the swarm of Stymphalian birds follows, screeching and rattling as they cover the sky like a shrieking cloud. They march across the countryside to the beleaguered shepherds, passing mournful goatherds watching their depleted stock. The wailing of a woman draws the expedition leaders ear, following the shrieks of lamentation they discover a family, keening around the body of a young boy. His throat had been torn out by massive jaws, his entrails spread across the field. His broken spear sits nearby, the tip bloodied with tufts of white hair caught in the hide wrapping.

"What happened here!?"
Barks the commander, grasping the father by his shoulders and slapping sense into his eyes.

"Th-the...the great wolf! The beast of the wilds!! He came!! With-with his pack! Hundreds of wolves and beast! They took my herds! They took my son! Why!? Why have the gods cursed us so!?"
He wails, tearing at his face in his grief and rage.

The commander growls, working his arm as the setting sun prompts a chorus of howls from the forest, glowing eyes present in the gloom.

"They... Have come... For the rest of us.... We are doomed.... Ares has abandoned us!!"
Cries the farmer, cradling the torn body of his son.

>The White wolf and his pack have come. 2 legions worth of wolves and beasts brought to heel by the great Wolf.

Your archers advance in groups, arrows blazing in the oncoming night. The snarling wolves and other predators surge forward, baying for blood as they meet the first volley of arrows. Wolves snarl and snap at flaming bolts lodged in their hides, others tumble and flop with pierced skulls or punctured hearts. Several dozen of the more hardy or agile beasts make it through the storm of feathered shafts, gnashing jaws and slashing claws ripping into flesh with abandon. Blood from man and beast splatters the ground in splashes that appear black in the torchlight. Your theirs legion rushes to the flank, firing as they go, seeking to overrun the beasts. With a monstrous howl and roars of rage, wolves the size of lions led by a monstrous white Wolf easily the size of a plowhorse fall upon the overreaching archers. The men fight valiantly, firing with quickdrawn arrows and slashing with daggers as they are pulled down and mauled. Only the intervention of the Stymphalian birds saves the legion from destruction. Their cruel bronze beaks rip into the wolves hides, their long barbed metal feathers pepper the beasts and drive them back, bloodied and yowling in pain.
