A Song of a Hedge Knight #1

This is a blue board which means that it's for everybody (Safe For Work content only). If you see any adult content, please report it.

You are a Hedge Knight, a Knight without a Lord. The year is 279 AL, and the mad king sits on the throne. You are at the Crossroads Inn which is a popular stop for travelers on the Kingsroad.

You are looking for work, while drinking away your sorrows by the mug brought to you by a red teeth stained lassie. You are a young in your 20s some may even call good looking. A man born into a poor family, but knighted, now roaming for a master. You carry a morning star a shield, you saved on buying a sword, to buy a good horse to call your own.

You have 12ss and 50cp to your name. Enough to buy a cow, but not enough to call anyplace a home. The fire cracker in the inn, as the dark sets on the outside world. Looking around the place you see a guy doing subtle looks around the place, maybe it looking for someone to spend the night or maybe he want to rob some people. Who knows in your light headed state.

Calling the red teeth girl over, you find out her name is Masha Heddle.

"What should I do to get my bed warmth by you?" You asked her.

"Sorry Ser, I'm happily married." She response and goes back to waiting tables. Well at least you still have your horse.

Looking for a job at the the tavern, you happen to come across a band of men. Travelers they said they are and need a extra pair of hands to get them to King's Landing. They are willing to pay 20ss for this service, and a extra 20ss if their is any trouble on the road. They tell you that 10ss will be given when they set off, and the reminding where they get to the Red Keep safely.

Do you take the job?
>Yes
>No

Either way after paying for your drink, you head up undress and get ready for the new day ahead of you. Be it filled with more coin, than the last.

Since dude is abandoning this I'll take over

Approaching the travelers who have asked for aide you slur out, "I'm your man, you need protection?"

"Aye Ser, that we do, you look experianced enough with that blade by your side. Are you interested?" The forty year old something man asks you holding tight to his pipe puffing on it as the embers highlight his eyes.

"I'll get you there soon enough, you leave in the morrow?"

"Aye, first thing in the morning as a matter of fact."

"I'll be there." You reply nodding your head before gritting your teeth as the motion makes your head swim, shouldn't have drank that much. Fuck.

As you spend the night in the tavern you have strange dreams that plague you all the while, flashes of battle scenes ravage your mind while the cackling of spoiled boy king atop the Iron Throne, before oblivion takes you.

You awaken to a pounding headache and vomit by your side. Nose wrinkling in disgust you throw away the covers and make for the basin of still water. Splashing your face you soon peer outside to see that the sun is slowly starting to highlight the sky. Shit on a whores anus, you nearly missed you payday.

Quickly dressing you slip on your small clothes, padded shirt, the chain mail that goes over with a belt to tie it close alongside your sword. Your trusty wooden shield though marred with many a nicks and the paint peeling slides onto your back with the aide of some straps. Tromping down the stairs you soon leave payment for the inn keep for the use of the room, now five copper stars lighter you soon find the travelers already hitching the horses to their wagons.

The forty something old man turns as he hears your chain mail clinking, "Glad you could make it, I had sent my son up earlier to wake you. He had said you were still deep in your sleep and muttering about little cunts. Something on your mind?"

"Not your concern old timer, let's get on with the trip already." You reply briskly not all that enthused that some farmer's boy had managed to sneak up on your in your sleep.

Holding his hands up the old man relents, "Fine, fine never say to the seven that I never tried."

Among the ones you were hired by you can spy what appears to be a roving family, the old man, a youth of ten and five, two younger girls of eight and seven each and an old crone on the wagon.

Shortly after your party departs from the Crosssroads Inn. It's not long before you are on the bridge past the river and Castle Darry is soon in sight. Things move along at a steady pace as you keep alongside the cart eyes watchful though the chances of someone attacking on the King's Road is laughable at best. A few hours pass and the ruins of Harrenhall are within sight as is the lake with the Isle of Faces within it. There is a wooded grove and a small dive down by the road that is away from the God's Eye as well.

>Keep Guard, Silence is your way.

Bored atop your horse you need something to pass the time, anything really. Noticing the covered wagons that would ramble with the potted road you call out to the old man, "What's in the wagon anyway? You merchants?"

Looking towards you the old man nods before pulling back the canvas cloth revealing baskets that held...

"Linen? You've got me escorting you to mother fucking King's Landing for Linen."

"Aye, that you are, good stock too just bought it up from Fairmarket, I've got a nose for when the money clinks just right Ser, I'll be able to make back what I spent no doubts there."

The teen beside the old man speaks up pride puffing up his chest. "Father's been in the business for years now, never had us be in the poor homes that's for sure. I'm learning to take over while we travel."

The old man chuckles, "Aye, but it'll be a while yet before that happens son."

"Yes Father."

"If you're doing so well, why bring along the younglings? Or the elder?" You ask nodding your head towards the trio of womenfolk in the back of the wagon.

Before the old man can answer there is the whistle of split air and a thunk as an arrow hits the seat of the wagon!

A battle cry of war comes from the slopped hillside as four men charge forth with rusted weapons and leather covering them!

Barking to the old man to ride hard you wheel your horse around and draw your sword!

>Run down the bandits.

Since new OP is kill. I'll take over.

Getting dressed in the morning, you head on down to the inn where the men are waiting for you to join.
"Aye sir I'll be here protecting you lot of Kings landing,."
"Good job sir Knight, we need to get the slik in before the night comes. Come along."

While traveling down the wooden road their is some mutters but nothing is really said. Before 5 bandits come from the woods. 2 are holding bows drawn and 3 have mauls ready to cave in your splint armor.

"You better hope that horse is a Mare. Or I'll give you a ficking to you." The leader of them said before charging.

The men with you hold their weapons with unsteady hands and the arrows are passing by to and from.

Returning the cries of war from the bandits with one of your own you kick into your horse sending him into a gallop past the three bandits that had charged ahead. Two move away from your charging horse while the last tries to take a swing at you only to miss! You meanwhile reach the last of the company the Seven's damned archer that has the gall to string a shot at you in the last second!

THUNK!

Your wooden shield comes up just in time to catch the arrow! Eager to return the favor you ride past him and swing down where your arm shakes with the blow you deliver. The brigand twists away from the blow and falls to the side his bow cut in two. The other three small folk are shocked at the sheer ease you had dispatched their friend, one makes a run back down the hill while the other two call him out for being a coward before advancing on you.

You've gained their attention now and have sent one of their number fleeing from your blows, from afar you can see the wagon and merchant family are already down the road quickly gaining distance.

Keeping your seat atop your horse you kick him into a gallop! Dipping down for another wild swing you draw blood as the steel of your sword easily parts the leather tunic of the brigand. He falls back from the blow while his companion roars out in fury taking a swing at your horse, however the rusty blade is more of a dull rod of metal more than a sharp instrument of war as it bounces off your horse leaving only a shallow gash.

You quickly have to hold the reigns tight as your horse kicks out away from the pain a stray hoof catching the other bandit in the face with a sickening crack of bone. Wincing at the sound you nod your head for the poor sod, at least it was quick. As for the other one you can see he still yet lives, though not for long judging by the streak of blood that is left behind him as he slowly laboriously crawls away crying out for mercy.

The fury of battle is still thrumming in your veins as your heart pounds after the short skirmish, you regard the crawling man before looking south down the road to see the merchants have gained a great distance ahead of you, the old man no doubt taking your words to heart and making for King's Landing as fast as his horse can pull.

>Spare the Bandit
>Slay him where he lay.
>Move on after the Merchant
>Write in.

Afterwards you are able to collect the few belongings among the bodies. Two rusty daggers, a hatchet, a rusted blade, some spare coins totaling at two silver stag and four copper stars. You're bag is near half full at this point, you'll need to unload these off on some smith soon, else you'll not have enough room to carry food.

Dismounting from your horse you keep your blade naked as you draw closer to the dying man who blubbers for his life even as pale faced as he is. Drawing up alongside him you simply say, "It's a mercy what I do for you."

With that said you simply stab down on the bandit through his heart silencing him once and for all. A brief sigh of his last breath and the rank smell of death wafts up towards you. Pulling your blade free with a squelch of flesh you take your oil rag from your hip and clean the blood off from the fight.

Noticing a few dings in the metal you curse internally before sheathing it, walking back to your horse you saddle up now a few coins richer and with some scrap to possibly sell as well. You kick into the sides of your horse urging your mount onward to quickly catch up with the old man and his company.

It does not take long laden down with goods as the merchants are as you draw alongside them your horse breathing deeply from the exertion. The young lad seems in awe of you as he quickly asks, "Ser did you slay the bandits? How many were there? Father had us hang tight after the arrow flew!"

"Sit down you daft boy, you're nearly grown now and yet you act like a child of five." The older man grumbles irritably making the lad look ashamed as he sits down with a huff.

"Thankfully it was only a minor skirmish, for now we should continue onward least we draw more attention to ourselves." You reply.

"Well we're in luck Ser, the flight we had to go has us not far from the Ivy Inn on the King's Road, we could make a stop there to let the horses rest for a mite or push on if you feel the need for it." The old man replies to you. "It's strange however, used to be that the roads were somewhat safer before all of this nonsense with that noble house refusing to pay the king their taxes. Damn shame what happened to the poor king now."

The old man does offer a good point, heavy riding had already made you sore, not to mention the potential of news from the city itself making its way back up north, though pushing through to finish your job would help as well.

"We'll make a rest at the Ivy Inn, let the horses catch their breath and break our fast there." You decide leaning back in your saddle for a better position, you can feel your bones ache from the skirmish even as the fury dies down in your veins.

"Aye, that we'll do then good ser." The old man says snapping the reigns of his donkey once more leading the way as you keep pace. Some hours later and the Ivy Inn soon comes into sight as the sun starts to slowly dip down in the evening sky. You'd find that the cost for staying the night at the inn is coming to a silver stag for the night with an extra ten copper stars to enjoy the baths that are located in the back of the ivy covered building. A meal costs around six copper stars as well, already your charges are soon making reservations to spend the night, noticing your look the old man waves you over, "Good Ser we'll cover your stay, if you hadn't been along with us, well we'd have not been here to begin with!"

The innkeep a swarthy man with a bristling mustache squints between the two of you, "Whats this now? Why would you say that?"

"We'd been set upon by bandits while my family and I were traveling the King's Road believe me if you will."

"Cor, you're not having a jape?"

"What's this about ill business at Sow's Horn? That's House Hogg isn't it?" The old man says taking a seat as the Channer boy brings ale for the family, you meanwhile simply take a seat seperate from your charges looking about yet still listening.

"Bandits," Before you can roll your eyes the innkeep quickly says, "Worse than that, these ones have been organized more than your run of the mill types, one of the daughters, Aline Hogg was abducted while she was with her septa! The lady of the faith was slain and the girl was ransomed back for a hefty gold amount."

"And the house allowed this?" The old man asks incredously at how easily broken the house was.

"Aye, thats the tale I've been told at least, plenty of the guard from Sow's Horn wonder down here and loose lips with a bit of ale between them all? Easy enough to learn the tale." The innkeep after settling the accounts with the old man turns to you, "And you Ser? Will you be staying with us as well?"

Ignoring the old man's offer you simply lay out three silver stags and three stars. "A room, bath and meal after, you mentioned these bandits? Was there any tale of where they have been? Who else they have targeted as well?"

The innkeep quickly makes your coin disappear into his pouch hidden beneath his belly before answering you, "Can't rightly say, the guards at Sow's Horn have kept right mum afterwards. It seems like they might have been punished to keep their mouths shut afterwards if I had to guess."

Walking back behind his bar the Innkeep soon pulls out a key on a string alogn with a wooden token, handing them both to you the innkeep rubs at his face in thought, "Though I do remember some travelers complaining about increased guard at Stokeworth, they almost seemed to be searching for something specifically. Not sure on what else I could tell you, now you enjoy your meal!"

Soon the Channer boy brings your meal a hearty stew with crusty fresh dark loaves of bread with a cup of ale to wash it down easily. As you enjoy your meal you ponder on your options.

With your meal finished you approach the old man as they are still eating their fast. "Hello Ser, what is it?"

"We should make a small stop at Stokesworth." You say simply enough.

Squinting at you the old man says, "Why would we do that? It's off the road a ways, not to mention that there are stories of guards ransacking your merchandise just to be safe, I've heard they also pocket somethings as well as a guard tax! Can you even believe such a thing?"

"That's true, but there could also be oppertunities there as well," You answer quick as can be, "People worried about their liviehood, tend to usually want creature comforts in some way yeah?"

"That's true, but, eh I don't know."

"Who knows maybe the Stokesworth's castellen would be interested in a trade deal to bolster their house finances, gold's always a wonderful incentive no?"

Waving his hand the old man relents, "Fine, fine we'll make a stop at Stokesworth thenif your so insistant upon it."

Smiling you nod your head before taking the bath token with you to enjoy a nice hot soak. There was also some basic soap there as well that smelled faintly of mint. Pulling yourself from the baths you towel off and soon change into a clean pair of small clothes before retiring for the night.

A faint knocking on the door rouses you from your sleep on the straw mattress. "Enter." You call out in a mumble slowly sitting up. The door opens revealing the young lad from before, "Ser, my father asked me to wake you, we're to leave soon."

Nodding your understanding you move to the dresser before washing your face to wake up, "I'll be down in a few moments boy, run along to your father."

You can see a look of annoyance cross the lads face but he turns away quick enough to leave you be. Lucky that you didn't have more of those strange dreams from the night before, must have been the drink. You begin to change into your traveling clothes with your simple arms and armor. The belt straps in and your ready to go.

Trooping down the stairs you break your fast with a simple oat meal with a small amount of honey mixed amongst it all and strawberries on the side. You are soon back on the road on the way to Stokesworth once again with the family of merchants. Coming off the Kings Road you can see the small castle come into sight from where you sit, it takes around another hour to arrive to the nearby town and castle itself.
>>
>>1817512

The gate does seem to be barred as guards continue to search each and every passerby that comes and go leading to a heavy congestion of bodies outside the town gates. The old man spares you a look of concern, however he stays in line with the rest of the small folk looking to enter the small village. Finally after what feels like hours your party are near the gates.

"Halt, in accordance with Lord Stokeworth has decreed that all travelers be searched and their intentions be known." A guard bearing the sigil of a lamb on a field of green with a cup approaches you with two others.

Hopping down from your horse you roll your eyes as you submit to the search disarming yourself as you hold your blade out to the guard to inspect. The guards are through you will give them that even if they are brisk, "Oy, what're you doing with all these rusty weapons eh?" One of them asks as they flip over your saddle bags revealing the poor quality weapons.

"Won them by conquest by slaying bandits that were attacking my employer here. I was escourting them to King's Landing when we decided to stop here for the market." You reply easily not all that perturbed by the questions before noticing the nervous look on the old man. Strange.

Never the less the guards are satisfied with your answer before they gesture to the old man to get on with it. Dismounting along side his family the old man stands near you as the guards start to tear into the wagon searching for what you're not entirely sure.

Whispering beside the old man you ask him, "What's got you so afraid?"

Jumping in alarm at your words the old man merely smiles with a pale face, "Oh nothing Ser, just worried that they'll bruise the fruits and such. Not to mention run off with some of my gold is all." For some reason you have the faint feeling he's hiding something when you hear from the gate a call of , "STOP THAT THEIF!"

Wrenching your head towards the noise you see a tiny form sprinting ahead of guards holding a burlap sack by his side as he runs towards the gates, the guards are busy trying to get off the wagon and the child will no doubt pass by before they can react!

The child runs with rampant abandone past you and for a moment you can see him lock eyes with you, just for a moment, a sense of understanding passes you both. Of two souls just simply trying to get by in the world as it grinds you down. However the moment is lost and the child soon scampers off into the wilderness off the road.

The guard giving chase is out of breath as he comes to the gate, "Get...after...him! Damn you curs!" The guard puffs out his chain mail looking to strain from under his surcoat. The two that are on the old man's cart hurry after trying to search for the child. The out of breath guard meanwhile simply waves you all into the town annoyance clear on his face.

That was interesting, you had noticed that the child wasn't stealing bread, instead the sack looked to be heavy for what it was. None the less you walk in with the old man who seems to let out a breath of relief once inside. Escourting your charges you head towards the market while keeping a look around the various buildings around you. Stokesworth's town is rather small for a minor house none the less they seem well enough, though you do notice that there are many a house that looks to be past its prime.

Whilest there you can hear the bustling of merchants hawking their wares from new shoes by a cobbler to shiny new blades forged in strong iron from smithies. The old man bides you a good day before he sends his son off to lead the rest of the family off towards an inn while he starts his rounds of buying and selling.

It would appear you have the afternoon off to enjoy the pleasures of Stokesworth, few that they are.

Hey guys I know that I am being slow, but if you guys want me to pick up the pace let me know, been busy with family things so far.

Also any tips or hinto on how to do quests? I just lurk more often than not.

(just make a basic structure for quests, and add on as you go, I've heard this helps, personal advice is don't do everything at the same time focus on one at a time and prioritize.)
