Are you tired of civ quests that die out quickly? Well fear no more, here's a tribe quest that wont die easy

Rules
> Each turn is a month
> Each turn you can do 2 things. ACTION, RESEARCH, and LAW. Diplomacy and trade cost no points, but warlike actions such as: organize traders to supply army effectively or move my army east cost one ACTION move.
>Moves can be used however you want. ie: you can do 2 actions or 2 researches in 1 turn.
>If your civ becomes advanced enough they can get more turns. Eg: build a library you get one extra turn specifically for research.
> Turns must be logical. You can't just develop guns right after you find sulfur. There's a process of development
> War can happen at any time by surprise attacks. I don't give any repercussions, but most likely other players will.
> You MUST be in discord to play

To clarify what the types of moves entail:
-ACTION (Literally doing things, building, traveling, gathering).
- RESEARCH (Developing new Ideas & techs, Upgrading/changing old ideas & techs)
- LAW (Making a change to your government, eg: in my oligarchy aristocracy, every 5 years a new council is elected by the masses. Or create a bureau of statistics which will record my population and taxes.)
>If a turn is well thought out or phrased well enough, you might get a bonus

I probably missed a lot more stuff but let's just get into the game
https://discord.gg/rJhaGqa

You are all migrant settlers and it's time to chose a place to settle. In this world it's a lot smaller compared to earth, therefore it's easier to move around.

One thing I lacked to mention are the tribe sheets.

Here's an example. There are three boxes to begin with. As you progress you add more boxes and settlements and resources you have on it. For now the three boxes are character traits you wish your people to have. It could range from manifest destiny to warlike to worshipers of the sun. It doesn't matter. If you chose something like god king and explain: it'll make it easier for the people to do tasks for us if they believe our king is a god, then I'll make it so that they work harder and are more devout in how well they complete their tasks, understand?

The tribe of imperium struggling to find some form of leadership have decided to hold an election. This way the person they believe most capable to lead will be able to protect them from harm and lead them to greatness.

They scout the area searching for materials and resources, they find tall trees, light grey soil that sticks together, a few rivers, a couple of berry bushes, and they see a few animals. There a birds of course, there were small mammals that jumped into the river, a deer, as well as something else larger that ran away from them.

The season is spring and everybody is glad to escape the cold, remembering the last winter that took many lives. Maybe this year would be a good year to prepare for the upcoming winter. Unfortunately they have no means to preserve food over a long period of time.

In an attempt to leave trail markers on hunting paths, the skhols have decided to leave marks on the ground or out of the nature around them to symbolize different things. They lack clay to write words on and they have no need to record things yet. However they have created a way to record numbers using symbols written in dirt and on charcoal. Some children have written how many seasons they've been alive for on their bodies in charcoal.

Other symbols used for hunting include rocks stacked on top of each other to represent paths towards watering holes. Additionally two pieces of wood stuck in the ground as an X represent a trap set in the area.

In terms of animals and fauna they attempt to draw their shapes on the backs of their tribemates. They look somewhat wonky, but capture the essential elements of the animals.

There are large mammals bigger than two men stacked together. They walk together in herds.

There are swamp creatures that lurk in the small lagoons and swamps that litter the prarie as well as several avian species.

In terms of flora, it's mostly just grass. No trees in the area. There are however many rocks lying about, probably dragged to the surface from the last glacier receding. They look hard to enough to use as shelter.
The land itself is flat and dry. Occasionally you will see small lakes or creeks, but not large bodies of water. It's know in the winter which is coming in a few months, the land will be completely frozen over.

The skatalites have spend much time researching fire usage. They understand how it can be made and what I can do. They don't worship, but rather respect it. Additionally they understand slash and burn hunting, which means that they cut down plants and burn forests in order to create grazing land for animals as well as driving them out of protected forest into the arms of the hunter.

They find many rivers to the south down the mountain, as well as many animals. Some of which seem friendly.
One of them is around the size of a small pony, and seems to be unafraid of the scrawny bipeds
One is a bird that keeps its distance, but watches the people

The other animals seem wary or even hostile. There are large catllike beasts that have hunted down a few of the villagers.

Turn 2

Research: Using texts and science of our religion expand education of writing and mathematics in our tribe.
Action: Form two militia groups one stays on home defence the other heads down the mountains to look for wood.
Similar to the skhols the skadites understand the concept of symbolism. They realize that they can make things that stand for other things. However like the skhols, they don't know what to put down as symbols. They could write on cave walls in charcoal, but that is hard to transport and hard to read. They would write on clay tablets, but they lack the understanding of what clay is. They also don't know how to tan leather, so writing on there is unlikely as of now.

They also decide since that they are still new to the land and have predators around them, they should split into two groups to defend the village and also look for wood.
Additionally as to how resources work, basically as long as you are connected to the resource you can build things with it. There are no set numbers but there is a basic logic to how it works. Like if you pick up a few rocks you can't build the pyramids. Be reasonable.
>>
Research: The Skhols refine their system of numbers and counting. Now there will be three symbols, the first (▽) symbolizing 1, the second (◠) symbolizing 12, and the third (⸮) symbolizing 144. Numbers shall be written by grouping together these symbols to make the appropriate amount, with the smaller values being grouped on the left. For example, 37, which is 3 twelves and 1 one, will be written as ▽◠◠◠. 63 will be written as ▽▽▽◠◠◠◠◠.

Action: The Skhols build basic shelters, using wood from trees for the walls and grass/leaves for the rooves.
>>
Turn 2
Imperium
>>1747550
Yet again there has been found a need for mathematics. But yet again they lack the proper means of preserving the information. In the language they now have words for large numbers, but they lack a place to put them. There are satisfied with tally marks in the dirt.
The population numbers at 241. There are 149 women and the rest are male. 23 of these women are past the age of childcarrying and 14 are too young to bear children. Not how I didn't say under 18, I said too young to bear children. There are
>>
>>1747571
How many branches per walls? How many leaves per roof? How many walls (3)? How many windows (3)? How many doors (3)?
>>
Turn 2
Skhols
>>1747571

The skhols now have a complex number system that is compact, workable, and useful. Unfortunately even the people who made it don't understand it. It's too confusing at their education level. Multiplication is beyond their grasp while addition is just fine. Either way, it works well enough.

Lacking trees the skhols can't build shelters and have to make do with several animal skins. They do collect a lot of grass and leaves.

They find large seeds in the grass that taste kind of gross.
>>
>>1747569
Action: Use bait tactics to draw in the cat-like predators, equip the home defence militia with rocks for bashing and throwing at them.
Research: Have researchers find out how to sharpen rocks for use in dissection of dead beasts and villagers
>>
>>1747590
Research: Fearing the Winter come before they can build shelter, the Skhols investigate several possible sources of building materials, including thatched grasses, wet earth from the lakes, and bushes.

Research: The Skhols attempt to domesticate the large mammals that travel in herds. They could be an effective source of meat in the coming winter.
>>
Research: Kiln. This will help with making fires with higher temperature.
Law: Let's appoint someone in charge of fishing to get food automatically

Turn 3:

The Skadites in an attempt to remove the cat predators from their land use bait tactics using leftover meal scraps to lure in the cats, then attacking them with stone projectiles. Unfortunately it doesn't work. The cats simply run away after the first volley of stones. They are injured, but there's nobody willing to pursue an offence after them after the attacks.

In order to cut up meat from a hunt, the Skadites have started using broken rocks that have a sharp edge. When those break, they find a new rock and smash it against a stone wall and pick up any shards they get. It's crude, but it works.

73KB, 2352x1328px
>>1747620
The skhols find many useful materials. They find more grasses, they find sticky grey dirt in lakes, they find that mixing dirt and thatched grass and baking bricks of it in fire makes a good building material. They also find more rocks skattered around as well as gigantic rib bones the size of a large hut.

The skhol attempt to make friends with the mammoths. It doesn't work. Accidently people try to befriend the seemingly friendly midget mammoths. But they aren't midgets. They're children. Many people die from the enraged mother. They take the bodies and bury them into a mound. They have learned however the babies have a fondness for healthy green shoots of young grass.
>>
Turn 3
Imperium
>>1747626
The village has figured out they can contain heat if they use some sort of box. They lack anything airtight, and wood will just burn in fire. So they stack a bunch of rocks together and light a fire inside. Unfortunately it doesn't burn very much because it lacks oxygen, but at the same time heat can escape from air holes in the cracks in between rocks.

Using the fishing spears made in the last turn by cutting a single spear into a trident in order to increase the amount of space that it can pierce, fishing is much easier. They assign 1 man to fish as much as he can to feed the village. He can catch a few fish an hour, but it's not enough to feed anyone outside his own family.
>>
>>1747636
Action: Second militia group gathers wood to send to the village.
Action: Build igloos out of ice for housing and storage
>>
Action: The Skhols build huts out of the adobe they discovered in the previous month.

Action: The Skhols perform a census, to find out their precise numbers.
>>

>>
>>1747705
The skhols spend the month firing brick after brick in order to build homes in the plainsland. They are still attempting to befriend the mammoths, and some of them are more friendly, however none are willing to separate from the herd.

The numbers of the skhols is 153. With 94 women. It's inscribed on the walls in the cave. Too many men have died to mammoths
>>
>>1747726
Turn 4
The skadites along with protecting their village has been amassing a large collection of rocks, tools, wood, and food. These tools help collect even more rock and wood. However not enough time has been alloted to hunting and many men are going hungry. The women can only gather so much food.

If you're people are hungry they won't work as much and some may even desert or lay waste to your cities.
>>
>>1747722
Turn 4

One day an imperium child is playing with dirt in the riverbed. He makes a ball and throws in the fire. It spurks and pops and he laughs. He throws more and more in until his mother calls him for food. He goes to sleep and when he wakes up in the morning, he finds the clay has hardened! He tries to wet it again, but it refuses to change shape. Several adults notice and are interested. They already understand basketweaving with grasses and how they can be used to carry food, but they have nothing that can be used to transport water or animal fat besides organs. This would be useful to preserve food all winter.

More people go hunting and scout around for resources. They find several tubers in the ground as well as more deer. Some of the deers are particularly interesting because they seem friendly to people. They will eat out of the hands of people, which is especially interesting because these creatures are known to be especially flighty.

A couple of fruit trees have been found as well, but the most interesting tree is one that when stabbed, will leak a very very slightly sweet liquid from inside of it. People want to gather this liquid and finally with the invention of pottery, can harvest it.
>>
>>1747748
Action: Use slash and burn hunting in the forest, using gathered sticks as torches, have militia groups two and 3 engage in melee when close and ranged combat when far.
Action: Have militia group 3 haft stone chips onto rock to create spears, have group 3 occasionally hunt passing by animals
>>
>>1747797
*stone chips onto sticks
>>
Research: More complex math
Action: Start getting that sweet liquid poured and transported. Try to boil it, and after cooling off, have someone try it
>>
Research: With a need for added protection and warmth, the Skhols develop better leather armors for their hunters.

Research: The Skhols find that prepared animal skins can be used as writing material.
>>
Turn 5
>>1747797
In an attempt to gain more food the skadites spend a whole month hunting for food. Now they have much meat, but how will they preserve it?
>>
>>1747839
Turn 5
Now that they have clay, numbers can be inscribed. Since they have not designated an actual set way to write numbers, they are all signified with pictures of food, and tally marks. However it is hard to count and read this way

By using the pottery bowls to heat their food, they can now boil things without fear of fire. They collect as much as they can and boil it. It looks brown and acts like a thick liquid. It tastes very sweet! It is now coveted as an expensive luxury... However a large amount of liquid just fell on the ground from the tree.

using the massive surplus of mammoth skins from dead mammoths, the skhols have learned to make clothing that is warm in the winter and protects them from some damage. The animals skins can also be stripped of fur, and thinned out by use of stretching. The leather remains untanned and the only known way of writing is charcoal, or a watery charcoal solution that doesn't work so effectively.
>>
>>1747856
Action: Use fire to smoke the meats drying and preserving them, automatically do this with meat in the future
Action: Send a militia group to look for the sea, have them escort a research team trying to research salt
>>
Research: Imperials have started to realize that if we piur water into crops they will grow faster
Action: Using the roman numbers, make tablets every turn with the total population, the rate of people being born every turn, the amount of people employed vs unemployed & the amount of people who are doing different kind of jobs among the employed
>>
Research: With something to write on, but little to write with, the Skhols develop inks and/or dyes from vegetation/berries/animal blood.

Law: Appoint someone to keep track of births and deaths, and in so doing keep track of the male/female population of the tribe.

Using fire and a cave in the mountain, meat is dried out and preserved and buried in the far back which reaches temperatures similar to a freezer even in the summer.

One group of militia men was sent to search for water, and on the way down they found an area of land that contains fresh water by way of river as well as a valley below sea level next to it. If a settlement was placed here it could produce salt by way of evaporation ponds.

The skhols using blood attemp to make a effective ink. There is not much shrubbery around the plains area, but there are many berry bushes known to be in the tundra further north. Anyway, the animal blood works well to make signs, and it washes away well with water so the leather can be reused, but effective dyes are lacking with the resources they have.

In the meantime to keep track of the number of people in the tribe there is a scribe that is assigned the position of keeping track of numbers such as how much meat or people are in the village. A glorified inventory manager.
>>
Research: The Skhols further develop their symbolic written language to include more abstract and nuanced concepts, making them akin to hieroglyphs.
Action: In preparation for the mammoths that will be tamed any minute now, the Skhols build a suitable enclosure to keep them in.
>>
>>1747905

The imperials in order to fell more trees and make more structures with them have developed a new tool. Previously instead of using a single handheld rock to chop away at trees, an "axe" is used to cut away at it faster. It works more effectively by utilizing a swing to multiply force.

Using a new version of tallys called "numerals" they are more able to accurately represent numbers and therefore can count and record more effectively.

In order to use wood more efficiently the imperials are searching for another source for fire. So they've been burning whatever they could find in order to use less wood. They don't really have a plan and due to this it might take a while.

With the wood they do have, they decide to fence off the rest of their land. There are a few wolves in the area so to protect themselves the Imperials add a wooden fence with their surplus of wood. In addition to discovering axes they also understand basic carpentry with joints and lashings. Nails don't exist yet, however dowels and pine resin do. Additionally with the terracing of plains land comes a new unexpected feature. People who cut the wood and made the fences are now claiming the pieces of grassland as their own and are building small grass huts in the land. They claim it belongs to them and their family and refuse to let others use it.

The salt fields are large, however one problem has arrisen. Although the winters in the land freeze the upper layer of the mountain, the winters further down the mountain lead to a monsoon season. The salt fields won't produce salt because the rainy weather won't let it dry. Thankfully due good research in firemaking, some of the salt can dry by throwing the slushy mixture in fire, at the same time it's hard to collect because it lacks a container to hold the salt in. The fishing industry is fine, the rivers are overflowing with fish, but spears can only catch so much. It seems there are more efficient ways right around the corner. It seems animals in the area are disappearing. Winter has arrived and they may have been over hunted this season.

In order to bypass this several new traps have been invented. One of the interesting ones is called a pitfall trap. It's especially dangerous because some people from our tribe have almost fallen in them. Thankfully we put up symbols next to them so people are aware of their location.

The skhols develop their written language, it goes by fast, however it is extremely difficult to read. There are far too many symbols and it is far too confusing. It's more akin to a series of drawings rather than a language. Many villagers are questioning the purpose of these writings. One man angrily asks:
"What is the point of these writings? Only numbers make any sense. Numbers help us record. Writing our words and reading them is more difficult than it's worth. A true man would not need to write anything, for with a stronger mind he can remember many things."

The skhols are interested in keeping the mammoths in an enclosed habitat. But they have no idea where to put them. They dig a deep hole and hope it'll work. A regular fence would be too small and not even hold an mammoth. They are out of ideas for an enclosure.

Hmm, indeed. As you say, only numbers make any sense.
However, additional writings enhance the meaning of these numbers, to allow to distinguish between, for example, 153 people or 153 men.
And the most capable and strong-minded men will have the most well-organized records, including not only numbers but symbols which give the numbers additional meaning and context.

Due to experience from making spears and other tools, the Skadites have plenty of experience with making new kinds of tools. They also have a surplus of animal bones. They create chisels and hammers and harpoons.

It's questionable as to what harpoons will be used for, as they haven't found any large marine creatures yet.

There are a few grasses in the area that seem promising to use as a type of rope. Previously animal tendons had been used, but they are too few and too costly. Rope used from grasses aren't as strong but are far cheaper and easy to reproduce.

Turn 8

The mammoths seem much more accommodating this time. They are much more willing to break off from the pack, especially the adults who lack children. They seem much more friendly and less wary of humans. Although less so than the children. They get close to the hole.... And walk back to the herd. Oh well. We're getting closer.

Meanwhile, winter has been sneaking on us and we haven't even noticed. The ice hasn't arrived yet, but the cold has. Thankfully leather tanning and basic clothing has shielded us from the brunt of the attacks as well as fire. We even built some tools to help us efficiently process the mammoths like hand-axes and scrapers. Our shelters also keep heat in very efficiently. And thanks to our baking of the bricks, there is no water in them. If they froze during the night, houses would come crashing down when they cracked.

The most surprising thing that happened is by far one of the children. One of the younger ones, a child of a brick layer, wandered off and towards the mammoth heard. The mammoths, now becoming sacred beasts seemed deadly to the villagers and as such they gave him a funeral rite ahead of time. Imagine the shock when he is seen the next day, riding on the back of the largest mammoth in the herd. He laughs and waves, and is later seen sleeping in their warm fur.

It's getting colder. The search for new fuel has not turned anything good. However charcoal has been discovered. Some of the wood had been buried in the ground, and the fire had burned it, as it had turned black, but it could somehow still catch alight. This doesn't solve the fuel crisis as there is still wood needed to make charcoal, but it is an interesting development. Recently one of the children caught a rat and has been caring for it. The adults are interested and have been looking at the larger animals and wondering if they too could be tamed. The friendly deer seem interesting, and they trapped one of them in one of the fenced off areas, but the deer simply jumped the 6 ft tall enclosure.

It looks like enclosing the deer is harder than it seems.

The skadites using chisels, hammers, pickaxes, and torches, mine out rocks from a small cave to make it larger. Using the rocks broken from it, they carve small pots to store salt.

Collecting small plants and materials has proven very effective. The berries spoil faster, however the nuts and seeds seem hardy crops. One nut is large and tastes especially pungent. Instead of eating it raw, people grind it up and eat it sparingly with meat. It tastes like a mix of fat, and peanut butter.

As a byproduct of gathering crops, a new kind of textile for making rope has been discovered. It's a kind of small flowering plant around a foot tall. It has fibers perfect for making rope, and it even has seeds in it. Unfortunately most of the seeds had dropped in mid summer, so there aren't any more left, but it's a good crop nonetheless.

Another useful crop is around 2 feet tall and is a bushlike crop. It sprouts several buds with a number of seeds inside. The seeds are very moist, but dry out fast. It seems like this is a good crop to be preserved in winter and the chaff is very attractive to animals.

If it's greater than 50 you successfully tame mammoths.

The material used for making adobe is attempted to be transferred over to make pottery. Sadly the dirt isn't as strong, but it is watertight. They pick out as much impurities like rocks and sift the rest of it out in a straw basket. Then the take the silt and remove much of the water. The take the silt and roll it into a snake, the snake is then coiled into the shape of a straw, but more fat. A second snake is rolled then coiled into a circle. More silt is used and you have a cup-like figure. It works, but it's fairly fragile.
>>
>>1751644

Thanks to previous experiences with kilns, pottery, and building a new kiln has been developed that is much more efficient. It can reach much higher temperatures. An indoor kiln has been developed, but unfortunately the fire itself can't be as hot as it needs to be because homes inside the villages are made of brush. In fact having fires inside of the homes is incredibly dangerous because they are crowded together and have flammable material everywhere.

The fisheries are doing well, the fish is coming out at a steady rate with no decline in sight. People are getting sick of fish and there is a surplus. So to offset this, people are smoking it using fire to dry it out. People remember a white rock that would suck out liquids and there is a search for it.

The deer taming is going well. It's a common sight for them to enter the village and beg for food. They will generally follow people around as well. Touching them is much harder still. They are prone to running.

There are no deer, but there are large wolves the size of cows, there are ants, beetles, there are a few berry bushes as well as several ground vegetables. Imperiums winter is going well. They are well stocked with fuel and fish for winter. The vases and urns are doing well to keep the seeds and fruits dry this winter as well.

In the villagers free time they experiment with vines and plants to make twine. The winter has frozen most plants, but there is enough to make do.

One trouble in the village is that food is going missing. Somebody swears there was an extra urn full of salt, but another says it never existed. The numbers are somewhat useful, but there are too many vague symbols to depict what is what. In an attempt to make it easier to read the symbols, the elders come up with a plan to "draw words". This involves making a picture for every sound, drastically decreasing the amount of symbols needed to be memorized. Unfortunately there are many sounds so currently there are upwards of 200~ letters.

(If you look at english we have tons of words that combine letters to make "new letters" for example: Mountain. Why don't we say Mount-ain? Like plantain but with a mount before it? It's because people want less letters, but some sounds in our language don't fit exactly to the letters we have. In spanish they use accents and ~ i forget what it's called to explain differences in sound.)

The new militia leaders eager to prove their worth begin scouting new areas of the land around them. Several of them find useful things, one man is walking in the woods when he is surrounded by a warm mist. He can barely see, and then he steps in a puddle. He sighs in relief and then he realizes the puddle is warm, he pulls on his foot but it is being sucked into whatever this thing is, he trips and falls into the puddle...

Thanks to learning about wood, the people of Imperium are brimming with ideas. One woman is using the bow as a kind of slingshot, where the flexibility throws a rock attached to a string. She is cast down as mentally retarded and stoned to death. A smart man says: "hey why don't I tie off the end here on the other side, and make it shoot wood?" Thus the bow was invented.

Meanwhile the string is also being utilized effectivly as fishing gear. Weaving skills for basketry are being used to weave fishing nets. These are different than regular basket traps, because they are much larger, and therefore need bigger holes, to let water move through it. if water couldn't move, then the net would break apart. now fish can be herded using a combination of nets and spears to make a maze guiding fish, or it can be used to catch fish in droves. It would be much more easy to catch fish on a platform though...

The skadites are now pursuing an academic attempt to help treat warriors wounded by the harsh animals around them. Using the sweet smelling flowering plant. It is cut prematurely, then the liquid is dried. The powder can be inhaled or burnt, and the fumes help prevent pain. Some of the youth have been using it recreationally, but it is much more effective as an anesthetic. One of the trees sprouts a nut that kills upon eating it. However the poison can be leached out in water and used as a mild disinfectant.

More tools have also been invented. Using obsidian tools, human flesh is easily cut without as much....gore. Complicated surgery is much more easy, especially with the string being used as stitches. There isn't so much experience with surgery, but as time goes by, medicine should advance.

The tribe of Imperium needs footwear. Walking on two feet has worked fine so far, but to walk longer distances to the forest to cut trees, and to walk on bare rock and brambles necessitates some protection of the soles. To this end, they create the sandall. It's very simple. A piece of leather attached to the feet with animal sinew. It's still somewhat weak, but with time and skill, the techniques will improve.

Craftsmanship with axes has only progressed. The tribe has begun sculpting with wood and can create giant sculptures out of whole logs. They contain faces of animals and spirits as well as important people in the village and are believed to bring good luck. Tables and stools have also been made using joinery and pine resin. Nails still don't exist.

One interesting thing made during this time is a boat. These are simple dugout canoes made by carving and burning a log. It's fairly simple, and in the small lagoons and shallow slowmoving parts of the river it works fine. But in the ocean it falls over at the smallest wave. Too bad.

The skhols are elated to finally become allies with the mammoths. They are large beasts with plenty of fur, large tusks, milk, and plenty of milk.

They have been worshiped as beasts of life for years and now they are one with the skhol.

In celebration of this event the skhols have decided to create a new festival to honor this communion. No mammoths shall be slaughtered or eaten this month in the middle of winter. On the holy day during the full moon when it's almost as bright as day and the northern lights come out, all their favorite foods shall be given to them and all instruments made from the mammoth shall be played in memory of their sacrifice.

This festival is all organized by the Mammoth Keepers. With the head of the organization being the family that houses the child who tamed the mammoths. Their job is to take care of the mammoths.

With mammoths power, many things we couldn't do will now be possible. Travelling longer distances, carrying more things, as well as the sheer workpower that can only be called.....well... mammoth-like.

The drawside is that mammoths require a large amount of calories that at the moment we can't provide. We need to produce more food, or change to a new location with fertile grasslands. Unfortunately most of the tribe is settled in this area so moving now is likely to start some revolt.

Additionally the tannery is now complete! Thanks to the free hands in winter it was completed early. It might be time to slaughter too, because we don't have much food left and the deep winter hasn't even begun yet.
