Fredrick "Rick" Hanselum considered himself a lucky guy, all things considered. Winning bets, scoring at the top of his class in the academy, and now leading a fleet. Sure, it was a relatively small fleet, consisting of only a Nero class Science ship and two Nemo class corvettes, but it was definitely a step up from a patrol boat in the middle of nowhere. The Nero class, although it was a science ship, held a wide array of combat functions, boasting several light turrets across it's angular space frame, and a single charged particle cutter, which was mainly used for slicing apart asteroids, but made quite well as an impromptu beam weapon. The Nemo class was significantly smaller, as it was a corvette, yet still packed quite a punch in the form of two spinal missile tubes and four light turrets.
Your first assignment was simple: Chart a small star system with a garden world within it, then return to base. Spooling up FTL drives, you made the jump.

Exiting Near-Lightspeed, you quickly had your ships move to the planet in question, before ordering the science officers to perform a scan of the planet

The scanner aligns with its target, information from the planet getting greedily sucked up. As the techs look over the data, they find... nothing. Nothing at all. It's just an average garden world, nothing more. As the crew deflated a little at a marginal failure, the comms officer yells at Fredrick.
"Sir, unknown contacts emerging from NLS! 1 Cruiser Class 4 Corvette class, and they're charging weapons!"
