Fire can also be used to stop demons from healing themselves, but for the most part is useless in a fight because you don't have a very good way to store fire in that event. The tech level is the same as back then, only since the events of recent have happened many resources are harder to obtain or find, making the Americas an even more prominent nation than before and Africa a more sought continent for it's resources.

You continue investigating. Around you is the church, several town buildings like the inn/tavern, the wax store, the general goods store, and so on. However you notice no one is outside right now, and the many doors of the town are either open or locked shut. You're not sure where the screams came from, until you hear them again, from the town square, just on the other side of the church. You notice smoke in the air and you can distinguish the sounds of angry town people and a young girl screaming for her father.

Yep, some time before the War of 1812 happens and we get to see some dank military upgrades. Unfortunately demon wars are about so it'll probably be delayed a fair amount.

After noting the fact that this is probably the cliched moment where you save the damsel, you head to the town square of which the screaming is coming from. Once you get there, you see a girl tied up on a pyre, and many townspeople with torches. Witch trials are normal however something does not seem right here. Normally you are notified since you are the chief fighter of the unholy and are asked to give advice. After you notice all the townspeople are not turning around or moving, you decide something here does not seem right

You stand up straight, miss your sword and decide to give up on it out of pity for yourself, and then bellow "What is the meaning of this"! in a groggy voice, as you just woke up. The man with the torch contorts his body, having his head turn around while his body does not. His eyes are bloodshot and some unholy stench pours from his orifices. He screeches in a manner no human should be able to, and the rest of the town turns around and starts to move towards you.

This time you draw your sword properly. You realize you need some time to come up with a strategy, so you run towards the church in order to keep yourself safe. Once inside you bar the doors and look around. There are 2 floors, and the 2nd can only be reached by a ladder. You climb the ladder and think about what to do. You know that possession means there's a weak demon somewhere in the town, however finding it is the hard part. You hear a large slam against the door, and realize you need to start moving if you want to find the demon. Once you kill that demon everyone will return to normal.

Since we are on the second floor, are there any windows? Also, is the ladder separated from the building?

If yes for both, we should put the ladder next to us on the second floor, break open a window facing in the girls general direction, and observe anything of interest...
