dark city rain.jpg

Rain pours on the concrete floor, flowing down the metallic walls and alleys of the Bazaar´s outskirts. A small child in an oversized jacket hides from the downpour, sitting on an old mattress in a tiny walkway under one of the buildings, the rain flowing into the storm drains. The lead gray sky so prevalent in the area refuses to give away the hour of the day, like every other day.

The kid in a jacket searches its pockets for a box of matches, finding it dangerously close to empty. The food stored two days ago had already run out, and the child´s stomach growled, an even more dangerous thing when one lives so close to the Bazaar of Nightmares and its temptations. The older kids, the few of them that have been in this place longer than a week, say that the prepared food from the Bazaar is worse than poison, and nobody that´s eaten it lasted more than a day before disappearing, and yet, venturing into the Bazaar to steal ingredients to make food with is the only way to obtain food in this place, other than hunting rats… The kid will have to sneak into the Bazaar soon, both for matches and food.

The kids living outside the Bazaar aren´t united by anything other than self-interest in the information others may have about the Bazaar and its dangers. A few of them join together, but most are wary of others. They have all heard the stories told by some of the rougher-looking kids, stories of betrayal, and of new customers. The Bazaar always welcomes enterprising workers, after all.

The little kid in a jacket stands up. What is its name?
>Johnny Wilson, 7 years old. Good at running, but hasn´t ran into any of the real dangers of the Bazaar, and hasn´t gotten past the very edges of it. Knows little of the dangers of the Bazaar.
>Elise Hanson, 6 years old. She´s best at staying quiet and hidden, hasn´t ventured into the Bazaar yet, eating what another kid gave her. Has heard more rumours than most new kids, and knows some information that´s not common knowledge, but hasn´t verified it.Somewhat naive

Depends on what you do.
Depending on what you do, Elise might live for a while yet. Or not. If you die, there are other kids.
In short, you will play as one character until that character dies. Some things you discover may transfer, if you told someone about it. Items, if you stored them somewhere.

Headpats are a possible outcome, i guess.

Elise was hungry, and she knew that she would have to move from her safe spot and into the Bazaar. The thought frightened her little mind, having heard the stories, though she had never gone there herself. She knew in what direction she needed to walk to find it, and that ingredients wouldn’t be too far from the edges, but the idea of encountering something like the Puppeteer or a customer was terrifying. She swallowed saliva, and her stomach growled- there was no way around it, she´d have to go in.

She tip-toed through the walkway, looking around the rusted iron walls of the outskirts for the telltale marks the other kids left, the small arrows pointing to the safer entrances to the Bazaar. Elise pinpointed 2 nearby entrances, each with its own set of marks. She didn´t really understand them, having been in this strange place for less than 2 days, a newcomer in all respects, but she recognized one of the drawings and paled when she realized what it meant.

The owner sees through the doll eyes right? Just watch out for spider webs and water (?)

Up was the Puppeteer, Elise realized, what the kids whispered was one of the most dangerous things you could find without entering the Bazaar itself. She didn´t recognize what the spider-looking thing could be on the other path, but she had not heard anything about dangerous spiders in from the kids, so it couldn´t be as bad as the Puppeteer, she imagined. There was food both ways, and the left had water, so she chose to walk through the path on the left.

The iron hallways twisted and turned, ramps going up and down in the middle of the streets without seeming logic or reason to it. The rain poured on top of the little child, making her glad she had found the jacket when she woke up in this strange place one morning, completely without warning. Kids didn´t talk much about how they ended up there, but it seemed nobody really knew how or why they did, and most of the knowledge anyone had of the place was passed by word of other kids after they came back, so nobody knew anything for certain- Some kids lied, but they tended to never be believed again, and their food mysteriously disappeared during the night. Some particularly nasty lies ended up with a dead liar.

Elise ducked into a small vent, marked by arrows like the rest of the passage, and lighted one of her remaining matches to have some light in the cramped metal tunnel, as she squeezed through it slowly. Her stomach ached already, complaining about the lack of food, and her nose picked up on something- it smelled delicious!

Rushing out of the vent following the smell, Elise made little noise as she edged closer to a plate of meat, delicious, on the ground… There were some rats nearby, and one went closer to smell it, running away scared afterwards. How… odd.

But the food seemed so enticing…

No, no, you can´t eat the cooked food in here, Elise remembers. No matter how much her stomach protests, she knows. Even the rats know there´s something in the food that´s bad. Whatever it is, you don’t want to eat it. The child tears her sight away from the succulent looking plate of food and look elsewhere, finding a door – but out of the corner of her eye, she spots something…

A doll. It´s a doll.
Did she go through the wrong place? No, no, no, the symbols said this place wasn´t the one with the Puppeteer, she reassures herself. Were the symbols wrong? Or is it just that it left one of its dolls behind? Some of the kids say the Owner of the Bazaar can see through the eyes of the dolls. Those cold, little beady eyes…
The little girl rushes out of the room into what seems to be a small hallway, with windows to one side looking to what seems to be a closed down cafeteria, the lights turned off- Perhaps inside you can find uncooked ingredients…?

A cafeteria, outside of the Bazaar grounds? That´s…strange. Elise thought all of the “city” outside the Bazaar was locked doors and iron walls, She had never heard about a place like this. Maybe she was the first to find it? She thought to herself- if there´s food in it, I’ll be able to eat something at last. Might even find some matches to keep warm…

The little girl opened the door quietly, making sure to not cause any noise that might grab anything´s attention- The doll might have seen her, and she didn´t want to think about what that could entail. The air in the cafeteria smelled of coffee and breakfast, something that reminded her of home- What were her friends and family doing now? Looking for her, maybe? She held a little glimmer of hope in her heart that her parents would be able to rescue her and the other children from here, a small spark of light in the depressing place she was in- Something she knew was unlikely to happen, but refused to let go of. She crawled beneath the tables, trying to hide from anyone that might look through the windows.

The door on the back of the cafeteria creaked slightly, startling her as she slid through the opening, her back pressed against the wall. The room was dark, so she lit a match, which burst into life with a satisfying crackle, and her eyes opened wide at the sight of the edible food in her reach. The squeaking of rats in the room distracted her for a second…

>Offer a bit of food to the rats.
>Take it all for yourself.
>Make sure nothing is in the cafeteria, or following you.
>>
>>1555221
>Offer the food to the rats.
We should keep a few around as a tester
>>
She remembers the rats avoid bad food, and offers a bit of it to the rats. Her stomach rumbles loudly, and she clutches it in surprise, hoping that it won´t have been heard by anything dangerous. The rat smells the piece of uncooked meat and nibbles it quickly, looking at you in between bites, as if scared you will steal it away. The girl grabs all of the food she can carry and scurries off through the door, some of the rats following her around. She hears the creaking of the cafeterias front door and instinctively dive bellow one of the tables, the rats fleeing in all directions around her, and then… silence.

The little girl stays beneath the table, doubting if she should go out or not. Should she run? Should she stay there until she´s certain she´s safe?

Elise stays hidden beneath the long wooden tables, the rat´s scurrying suddenly being interrupted by a loud squeak, followed by silence. She starts to breathe faster, but does her best to try and keep calm, to make less noise- There´s something in the cafeteria, and it killed that rat, she was sure of it.
The wood of the table creaked as something heavy stepped on it from above, one leg at a time. One…two… three? Four?...
Eight?!

Elise could feel the cold sweat running down her face, as she hugged the food she´d stolen tightly, like a lifesaver in the middle of an ocean, slowly rocking back and forth, too scared to think about anything other than the giant spider above her. Its steps made the wood creak as it slowly moved across the table´s surface, the sound of gnawing what she wished she hadn´t imagined was the remains of the rat filling the air between its patient and measured steps. It moved slowly towards her, and her heart beat faster and faster, her entire body shaking quietly.

She had to do something, but what? What could Elise possibly do to survive, to avoid being eaten by a monster?

The little girl, panicked, throws a piece of looted bread away, flinging it across the room and hitting the glass with a small thud, causing the giant spider to quickly turn around and jump off the table and onto the ground, as the girl…

Elise warily crawls out from bellow the table, the spider closely inspecting the piece of bread, its head obscured from view- In the darkness of the cafeteria, its outline can be made out with difficulty- It is slightly bigger than you in height, and much wider, too. It wouldn´t be out of place to compare its size to a small car, and its extremely quiet, only making the odd chittering noise. The young girl tiptoes slowly towards the door, holding her breath- When suddenly, the spider swerves wildly to face her, then stops, as if unable to see her.

Resisting the temptation to scream, she tosses another piece of food- meat, this time, to the ground, making the spider jump at the now irrecoverable food, and start devouring it with gluttonous appetite. The little girl´s stomach growls, and the spider once again looks towards her, but goes back to its food quickly, and the girl manages to exit the room.

Good god, that was terrifying, she thought. She even lost a good chunk of the food she had managed to loot… but at least she´s alive. Still, she´s running low on other supplies needed to cook the few pieces of meat she has left, so she has to recover at least some sort of fuel to light a fire- The nights are getting colder, and her jacket is struggling to keep her warm.

>Return to her “Camp”, stash the food away in some vent while she goes to recover more supplies
>continue onwards, carrying the food. Might help deal with other encounters like this.

Elise was still shaking, covered in sweat after her encounter with the spider. Rats moved at the corners of her vision, following the smell of the food she was carrying. “No” She thought “I can´t leave this back at the bed. Someone else will eat it ”. The idea that, after having to escape from that spider, someone else would have the fruits of her work, was horrible. At least the rats had helped her- but some other kid? She had been given food by some of the kinder ones, but…

She shook her head and took a bite out of a loaf of bread. It was still oddly warm, and her stomach growled with appreciation for the untainted food it so desperately craved. She hid in a small corner, finishing the loaf of bread, and painfully managing to avoid trying to eat the rest of the food raw- she´d have to cook it, it´d be even better, Elise told herself.

Forwards, two forks in the path confronted her, each leading into a hallway- The shorter one, on the left, smelled of more food, and dug closer to the Bazaar, actually entering its grounds- while the one on the right would keep the distance from it, and probably be safer…

Deciding to head right, Elise hurried up through the longer corridor, a couple of rats following her quietly, hiding in the small corners and nooks of the strange hallways that formed the maze-like buildings around the Bazaar. She hoped she´d be able to find her way back after all of this, she´d heard it got more convoluted as you got closer to the Bazaar itself, though it´d been rather simple so far. She hid in a shadowed corner as she scanned the door at the end with her eyes, making sure she wasn´t missing anything on the corridor- The door was easily three times her size, making it impossible for her to open it while carrying things with her hands, but there was a smaller door to the side, one that was child-sized. How odd… children were almost never customers, so why would they have built a door the size of a kid?

As the young child opens the door and steps inside, it closes behind her, causing Elise to jump in surprise- She panics, trying to open it again, but to no avail. It is locked through some kind of mechanism- a trap? The door was too small and too far away from the bazaar to have been a normal service door-

A loud *thunk* silences her train of thought, making her slowly turn around to look at the giant spider, even bigger than the last one, slowly crawling towards her, followed by countless others. The room, of bigger size than she expected, is filled to the brim with cobwebs. The realization dawns on her that the spiders must have nested here, and the big one has grown too big to actually leave- or been left here as a trap by one of the Bazaar´s staff.

Locked up, with no way to escape, Elise is quickly killed. The last thing she hears is the chittering of thousands of hungry arachnids, and her own screams.
