the king has been lying on his deathbed for months with a disease that can not be cured
his eldest son died in battle against a rival country, his other 2 sons were lost at sea on a trading expedition. his only remaining child is his 2 year old daughter who is betrothed to a distant duke.
the kingdom is run under agnatic seniority succession
each of his dukes believe they should become the new king.
the first duke is an experienced man who has been ruling since the king was still in his cradle.
his lands are rich and he has led campaigns to protect and expand the kingdom. his subjects love him and he has established a level of loyalty among the nobility, but foreign leaders see him as too aggressive and unwilling to cooperate with anyone. and on top of all that he is 85 and unable walk without assistance.
the next duke is about 19 and has just inherited his title from his father who is the king's distant relative. he has experience fighting in wars but no experience leading. hes know to be a deeply pious man and has openly called to retake land lost in a holy war.
the last duke is 32 and is a hunchback and has been racked with pneumonia since he was a child. he has served on the council for years and pushed for major reforms to "take power out of the hand of nobles and priests, and give the peasantry more freedom" foreign leaders see him as a persuasive man and has kept an amicable relationship with several leaders. he holds the smallest dutchy and his subject have been plagued by perpetual famine.
who takes power in this situation?

Does the 32 year old duke have a family or wife and children?
no child but he has a 15 year old cousin
first duke has a large family with plenty of cousens and cadet branches as well as kids and grandchildren
the 19 year old has no sons but has 2 brothers and several cousens

yes but the second duke has a stronger claim being a distant relative of the king. hew also has the support of the clergy and possibly the military being a pious zealot and calling for a holy war.
and on top of that the 3rd duke has the support of the general populace and potentially the other kingdoms. he could easily paint the 1st duke as a symbol of noble oppression and rebel against him.

my choice is the 19 year old. need legitimacy in these situations and he has no diplomatic downsides.

Nobles and priests may become problematic down the line. They shift the power away from the king, and pose a threat to the throne.
The first duke is good, well liked, but too old. We may not be able to do much before the reaper comes a-calling.
The second duke is a bad choice. A holy war will empower the priests and nobles, drain the treasury, and certainly incur the wrath of the neighboring kingdoms. We may easily become puppets, dependent on the whims of our vassals and priests.
Meanwhile, the third duke was able to remain on the council for years even though he pushed for limiting its member's power, and is liked by foreign leaders even though he rallies against nobility and priesthood. He may look like shit, but those are some incredible persuasion skills. If we want to consolidate power in the beginning of the rule, he is the one to take. Depending on the situation, we may be able to trigger peasant revolts to eliminate opposing nobles or pressure them into increasing our powers. The less nobles there are, the more powerful we will be.
