In the deepest reaches of the northern forests, amid fallen trees and the stench of rot a stirring rises from the soil. A clawed limb punches from the earth, a hardened carapace emerging from the soil, a nightmare creature pulling itself from a cocoon long secreted away. Multifaceted eyes glimmer in the light as they view sunlight for the first time.

>Hive... Where hive? Where... Where mother? Silent? Why... Why silent? Gone? Dead? Am.... Am last?"

A trio of fat, white, soft grub like creatures emerge, the size of large dogs yet dwarfed by the juvenile queen. The faithful workers mill around the queens feet, their large jaws and dextrous, soft forelimbs capable of performing nearly any task. The trundling sound of their dozens of soft feet stops as they peer upwards like faithful dogs, their simple minds reaching their Queen

A pair of your workers trundle off into the forest away from the Queen as she drowses, the last of their number crawling in a small circle around her, pushing soil into a makeshift nest around her bulk.

Hours pass and the dissapointed grubs return, nearly empty handed. They bring small mushrooms and berries, informing their queen that there is not a great amount to be had but they are more than willing to try again if she pleases.

>Work for hive!

>Build Home for hive!

The excitement of your Grubs is palpable as they scurry to and fro, gnashing wood, leaves, soil, small stones, anything they can find into a thick grayish brown paste. They pile soil, mixing it with their natural cement and molding it into walls and tunnels around you, a small hole at the top allowing in fresh air and light as the drones thicken the walls, adding in small rooms and chambers for everything from eggs to Food storage.

By the time they are done a thick dome of mud and dissolved stone has been raised nearly thirty feet high, the walls nearly six feet thick and spiraling with tunnels perfectly sized for your grub workers to perform maintenance and improvements to the earthen structure.

>33. Whos hunting who?

Your massive stomach grumbles as your survey the meager portions of mushrooms and berries your Grubs have been able to scrounge up to the very best of their ability.

They shrink in self disappointment as they feel your hunger through the hive-think

>Queen hungry!
>No eggs from hungry queen!
>Grubs fail! Grubs bad!
>Food for Queen! Get get!

Your Grubs wriggle away, their soft feet tapping away on the hard packed floor as they begin their search for food. Their simple minds filled with their desire to please their Queen.

>Hours later.

You pause in your cleaning of the Mound floor, the floor now a hard packed sheet of earth and stone when a cry of pain reached you through the hive-think.

>Hurt! Bad! Bad Thing hurt Hurt grub!
>Hurt? Grub hurt!
>Hurt! Hurt! Queen! Grub is hurt!

Two of your Grubs wriggle in as quickly as their soft bodies will allow, carrying their wounded compatriot on their backs. It wriggles painfully, avoiding aggravating the sharpened, feather studded stick jutting from its pudgy side.

>97! Incredible success!

Your grubs pitterpatter their tireless way across the forest, searching for the most perfect of food sources for their beloved queen.

>Too chewy. Queen mouth need soft food!
>Too bony! Need meat for queen belly!
>Too dry. Make queen thirsty! Thirsty queen make dry eggs!

The Grubs search and search, their little minds devoted entirely to the task. Suddenly they come across a clearing positively brimming with food!

A small stream splashes with large, fat fish.

Rabbits and large rodents move among the brush.

Fruit grows heavy on the branches of the thick trees.

Even the wood itself in this part of the forest is delicious and tasty as one Grub discovers. Quickly they load their backs with as much food as they can carry, scuttling back to their Queen happily.

Grubs are your basic utility unit. A scout grub (I think that's what you mean) would do better as a slim, quick moving beetle/wasp like creature but if you want a flying grub that's fine with me

>70. Good success. Improve Mound.
A pair of silvery white eggs the size of large melons sit next to a larger, steel Grey egg. The Fat, Trundling Grubs gaze lovingly upon them before scurrying off to do their work.

Stone, earth and wood are chewed and mixed with thick, gluey saliva before being laid down in thick globs, soft forelimbs smearing the sticky substance into new walls, tunnels and rooms. The central chamber is especially attended to, more small windows opened up and the Grub-tunnels coming inconspicuously from every nook and cranny.

The Grubs are so entranced in their work that they don't even notice as their new siblings hatch and begin moving up to assist.

>New Grubs! Hello!
>Little Grubs! Build build!
>Tiny! Soft! New! Hello!
>Old Grubs build well! Happy hive!
>Work for little grubs? Work work!

The larger egg sits shattered asunder, a stocky, angular creature crawling from its ruins. Damp wings uncoil from its back, fluttering as they quickly dry. The Scout beetle crawls up the wall, eager to see the skies for the first time.

>Fly high! See things for Hive! Fly Far! Skies belong to hive!

Your Company of chubby Grubs trundle off happily in a convoy of soft white flesh and stubby legs, waving their soft forelimbs in the air as they march

>Food for hive!
>Food food! Old grubs show little grubs!
>Food for hive! More food! More hive!"
>Happy Queen! Happyhappy!

Back towards the Fruitful clearing they march, gathering berries and mushrooms along the way for their own bellies, storing the food in small pouches in their bellies as they load their soft backs with fruit, wriggling fish, soft tender wood and nutritious greens.

They trundle back towards the hive merrily, little feet puttering as they go.
By the time they arrive a new group of soft, pure white baby grubs are wriggling curiously around, building tiny mounds of mud and sticks.

>+2 Warriors.
>96. Excellent success
A pair of slate Grey eggs are laid in the soft interior of the Queens nest. They nearly dwarf the fully grown Grubs that trundle around the nest, cleaning and sorting the debris on the floor and packing gluey cement into cracks in the walls. The warriors will hatch to a much more refined nest than their older siblings did.

Your scout beetle takes off happily, wings buzzing like a saw as it gains altitude and begins circling the mound in ever widening rings. A pair of the tireless grubs follow it from a safe distance, ready to intervene at a moments notice.

The scout sees much in its travels around the mound. A small river courses only a short distance to the west, fish and larger creatures splash merrily in the sleepy current.

Large groups of four legged animals move among the nearby meadows and clearings as the forest gives way to a long flat stretch of grassland in the south

A large outcropping of earth and stone juts above the forest a short distance to the north. Similar and larger outcroppings are visible in the distance.

The forest thickens and stretches as far as the eye can see to the east. The Scout beetle grows nervous and returns before scouting to far.

>River to the west.
>Meadows and Grasslands to the south
>Mountains to North
>Forest to the East

The scout beetle returns just in time, trailing its exhausted escorts as a pair of hulking beasts roll happily out of the entrance to the hive

>Raaaarrr Claws of hive!
>Kill! Kill for Hive!
>Queens Claws!

The warriors stand nearly as tall as the queen, their shells a deep rusty brown. They clatter around on long, spiny legs as thick as small trees, tipped in viciously sharp points. A pair of scything claws extend near their vicious jaws. They tussle goodnaturedly, worrying the grubs as they near the Mounds walls.

Your queen intently observes a small, fluttering insect on one of her claws. The tiny creatures wings interest her greatly. She ponders the idea of swarms of her children taking to the skies in a cloud that never ends.

>yes.... Children fly. Wings for children If want"
>Wings mutation unlocked. Units can now be created with wings to allow short flights while unencumbered.

One of your warriors stoops low and allows the previously wounded Grub to climb onto its broad back. Its soft legs form dozens of suction cups as it happily wriggles up the warriors thick shell.

>Warrior take little grub to hurt place. Show mean thing that hurt grub.
>Warrior hurt bad thing? Good good! Bad thing hurt hurt grub!
>Scout watch from sky! Scout help!

The trio make their determined way through the woods. Searching for this "bad thing" that had dared to wound the innocent grub. They search the clearing, shying away from the tacky spot on the leaves where the grub had bled as they inspect the area. They find nothing but a small set of tracks, leading off into the distance to the east.

>Improve hive.

Your Remaining grubs work tirelessly, piling earth and plant matter into heaps and then chewing them thoroughly, mixing in their gluey saliva to form cement. They smear it in layers, forming new passages, rooms and walls, expanding the Mound outwards and Upwards.

Bombardier Beetles here we come
>>
>Research Flame Gland.

Your Queen shivers slightly in the cool of the night, even her cold blood chilled by the air. The grubs around her nest curl into a large pile, soft feet-parts twitching in the air as they dream

>Build... Build...
>Work... Hive... Work
>Grub... Fly. Grub fly high

She shakes her head slightly at the last dream-murmur. That grub may ne too hopeful. Perhaps a Grub that is warm would be a better improvement than a flying grub. She contemplates a addition to the hive that produces heat to defend and care for the hive. A large creature of heavy flesh and burning will.
>Flame Gland mutation created. Allows a short range flame breath attack for upgraded units.

>64. Scout to the east, follow those tracks.

Your scout beetle takes off in the early morning, shaking dew from its glossy shell as it soars into the , its keen eyes following the trail of footprints and scent through the forest to the east.

>Find Bad Thing! Bad thing hurt grub! Grub good! Bad thing bad! Bad bad!

Determined the scout flies faster and faster, spurred on by the thickening trail and the scent of burning wood and a thick stink. Suddenly it comes upon a clearing, many crude shelters carved into the ground or under trees, smeared with thick dung in strange symbols. A group of hair covered bipeds are tearing into a carcass of some other biped that is suspended over a smoking fire. One of them raises its gore covered snout before issuing a strange barking command to the others. Immediately one grabs a long stick with a stone on the and lobs it at the Scout. The crude javelin soars through the air and whistles under the scout who dips in the air before turning and fleeing back to the mound
>Found bad thing! Bad thing try to hurt scout! Bad bad BAD
>Gnoll village discovered.

>45. Food storage.

Your grubs begin constructing a series of small burrows and underground chambers beneath the Mound. They carry out loads of earth and small stones, piling them high next to the walls.

Their inexperience with tunneling shows as the soft, unreinforced walls collapse in sections, trapping one grub for several hours before it can be dug free.

>New unit created. 1 Hauler Grub.
Your Queen decides the grubs need help in carrying more supplies. As eager and tireless as they are they are still rather weak and small. She concentrates and eventaully releases a large, silvery Grey egg.

The grubs gather around their new siblings egg curiously.
>what is? Big grub? Big big?
>Grubs carry plenty but big grub carry grubs!
>Big Grub help help!

Hours later the egg splits open like a leathery flower, a massive grub pulling itself free. It is very similar to its smaller siblings except for its massive size and long body complete with a slightly concave back. Grubs happily leap upon its back and ride around the Mound, burbling happily
>Big Grub! BIG BIG
>Grubs ride! Help get! Fill Mound!
>Hauler Carry little grubs. Hauler Help.

>69. Build food storage

Your industrious Grubs begin again on the tunnels, carefully mixing the soil and stone in their jaws before mixing it thoroughly, letting it dry before advancing. They make excellent progress, carving out several cool, dry chambers for food storage. Their pride is palpable to you as they begin filling the rooms with greens, fruit, roots, small rodents and fish.

>Grubs dig well!
>Food place finished!
>Food place FULL!

>49. Gather food.

Your Grubs again head out to the Fruitful meadow, their tiny minds full of their desire to please the queen. The lumbering Hauler Grub follows them placidly, its mild nature allowing a grub to direct it from its head
>Follow follow Grubs. Grubs show food place!
>Come come this way! Grubs show!
>Hauler follow.

As the Trundling convoy enters the meadow the Grubs happily point out the various points of interest to the Hauler. Their tour is cut off by several howls in the brush and a flurry of stone tipped javelins from shadowy figures in the brush. The grubs squeal in fear and clamber aboard the half loaded Hauler as the sharp stones stick into its blubbery hide
>Mean mean bad things! Bad things hurt hauler!

Its all good anon.

>1.mutate warriors with Flame Gland

>2.mutate Hauler with Hardened carapace
>>
>Hauler gets Hardened Carapace

Your Hauler begins shoveling away large piles of food, stuffing its cavernous belly to fuel a new change to its body. It drags its swollen body to a corner of the Mound and constructs a cocoon of powdered stone and saliva, sealing itself away to grow and change.

>Hours later.

Your grubs poke tentatively at the cocoon, their soft forelimbs scraping at the smooth surface
>Big grub?
>Why hiding?
>Come out big grub! Need carry things!

The cocoon shivers once, twice, three times before it cracks outward, large pieces falling away onto the floor. The Hauler peels its bulk onto the floor of the mound. Its soft white flesh is now covered in overlapping plates of carapace. Its soft legs are safely tucked away under its body and its tiny beady eyes glitter under a protective dome of shell. Resembling a giant millipede with a trough in its back the Hauler Beetle is more than capable of carrying anything the hive requires.

>Best of first 3 pairs of D100.
>Research Pheromones II. Advanced communication.

Your Queen sets her mind to improving the communication skills and abilities of the Hive. If her children can speak more effectively, they will be more effective.
>Pheromones Upgraded to Pheromones II. +5 to rolls involving group action.

>62. Send Warriors to Drive away Gnoll Hunting party.

>Bad Things scare Grubs!
>Bad things HURT GRUB!
>KILL KILL BAD THING
>KILL FOR HIVE.

The lumbering warriors stomp away as the the Grubs look on in awe, waving their soft forelimbs in their version of applause

>Warriors strong!
>Strong strong! Bad things ALL die!
>Grub fight too! Grub help!

The Overzealous Grub is held back by its fellows, its righteous fury held back by mild pressure.

In the Fruitful clearing the Knolls crouch over the body of a fat Doe, stone tipped spears jutting from its rent hide. Their muzzles are buried in its plump belly, entrails scattered across the ground. They growl and snarl, fighting over the choicest pieces.

The vegetation behind them rustles before belching forth a pair of chitinous monstrosities. Beasts of shell and lashing claws and snapping pincers. The first Gnoll that turns is skewered upon a claw the size of a sword, lifted high before being smashed down upon another Gnoll.

Sharp legs kick out and open bleeding gashes in their stinking hides, snapping bone and crushing organs.

>KILL KILL BAD THINGS
>BAD THINGS HURT GRUB

with terrified yips and their wounded and dead left behind the Knolls retreat, falling to all fours in their haste. The warriors chatter happily before knocking their massive heads together

>Many Bad things dead!
>Grubs safe! Grubs happy!
>Queen Proud!

>48. Improve Hive.

Your grubs turn their energy to improving their home. Mud and stone are layered in haste and joy. They burble happily, climbing high and forming towers of mud and gluey saliva.

Unfortunately mother nature has other ideas. Dark clouds move in quickly, bringing pounding rain before the substance has time to dry. The freshly formed structures are weakened, tumbling to the ground in front of the dissapointed builders

>Create new Unit. +2 Skirmisher wasps. Winged, flame spitting harassment units armed with sharp claws and a puff of biological napalm.

A pair of medium sized, red striped eggs are deposited into the nest, the Grubs inspect them for a moment before retreating, the slumbering presences within making them nervous.

>Hours later.

The eggs split open violently, startling a passing grub as the freshly hatched Wasps emerge. Their bodies are compact and strong, a pair of forelimbs tipped by knife sharp claws while their wings extend from their backs, buzzing rapidly to dry. Their malevolence is palpable to the Grubs who quickly retreat to their tunnels as a puff of bright blue flame emerges from the mouth of one of the Wasps with a belching sound

>Fly? FLY! BURN! FLY AND BURN
>YESYESYES FLY HIGH. BURNBURNBURN

The Destructive creatures take off, startling the scout beetle from its nap on the roof.

>WHA- Rude Rude! Mean Wasps!

>48+5. Improve hive.

Your Grubs begin anew on improving the hive, carefully mixing the powdered stone and earth and packing it into new, more sturdy designs. By the time they finish the mound has increased by nearly a third in size and is much sturdier.

>Careful careful! Don't Fall pretty walls!
>Grubs good builders!
>Mound so pretty!

>14+5. Improve food storage.

Your Grubs tunnel again into the soft earth, their massive jaws and forelimbs clearing away the dirt. They dig deep beneath the mound, carving out round chambers and lining them with their homemade cement. Suddenly a rumble sounds from above and the Grubs begin their retreat from the well known sound.

A cloud of dust follows them as the ceiling collapses, burying the new construction under tons of earth.

>Improved Cement Mutation created and applied to Grubs.

Following their Queens order the Grubs tuck into the food supplies, filling their bellies and forming small cocoons along the walls. The Warriors crouch in front of then, protecting their pudgy charges from harm while they are at their most vulnerable.

Hours later the cocoons are shattered one by one. The Grubs wriggle free, clacking their slightly larger jaws and feeling with more dexterous and stronger forelimbs. They feel in their multiple hearts that they are better builders now.

>Hive improvements DC is permanently lowered and walls/ceilings will be stronger from now on.

>81+5. Attack on Gnoll.

Your Warriors crash through the forest, following the Scout Beetles direction and the trails of blood spatter and dung on the trail. The Skirmisher Wasps flit overhead, cutting down birds with their scything claws as they follow along.

>Kill kill for Queen! Kill Kill!
>Bad things DIE
>BURN BAD THING
>EAT BAD THING

The Gnoll camp explodes into activity as the Warriors knock over the flimsy tents and crude shelters. Spears bounce from their carapace as they lash out with claw and pincer, spilling blood and viscera upon the ground.

The Wasps swoop low, slashing at faces and necks, leaving Knolls thrashing on the ground or running with their faces consumed in flame. Within moments the majority of the Gnoll Camp is aflame and littered with shredded bodies and shattered weapons. Your warriors sink their claws into a particularly large, scarred Gnoll with black fur, snipping his bloody head from his shoulders and carrying it in a claw for the Queen.

>BAD THINGS ALL DEAD.
>DEAD DEAD DEAD
>WARRIORS BEST WARRIORS.
>WASPS BURN BAD THINGS

>Gnoll camp Eliminated.

>78+5. Improve Hive. Fortress mode

Over the next few hours the Grubs toil like heroes. Mud and soil are brought over from far and wide, smearing the mixed cement over the mound walls and forming new defenses, new tunnels, towers and ventilation. The Hauler Beetle carries loads of wood and thick heavy river clay to mix into the cement, strengthening the walls further. By the time they finish the Mound stretches nearly twice as high as before, spires of mud reaching high and bringing cool air into the Mound. Your scout beetle reclines upon the highest point, nearly a hundred feet above the tallest trees
